Eng Tay was born and raised in Kedah, Malaysia. In 1968 he moved to New York City to study at The Art Students League, followed by graduation from The School Of Visual Arts in 1972 as a graphic designer. He worked in the graphic arts field until 1978, when he undertook several painting trips though out South America and Indonesia until 1980.These trips formed a basis for the types of scenes and moments that became his subject matter – images of people playing music, family moments and interactions, market scenes and daily rituals. He began to exhibit steadily and continued to gain international recognition as his work was shown in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, his native Malaysia and his adopted home of New York, as well as extensively across the United States

Artist Statement

In my artwork I attempt to use memory as the source of continuity. Emotions, relationships, colour, light, wind or sounds that I experienced last night, or many years before, are the raw materials which I try to create new moments rooted in memory –the images my etchings, my oil paintings and my sculptures represent.I wish to continue in my growth as an artist and as a human being, the one inseparable from the other, and to develop my ability to express my vision more clearly and so to be able to achieve a greater communication with others. As I evolve I find myself less interested in the refined and the complex, and more and more drawn to expressing myself as simply as possible- which translate into simplicity of form and an affinity with a more earthy feel. As I explore this direction I would like my work to become more and more universal and to be able to touch and reach as many others as possible; and I would wish that the boundaries between us can become fewer and fewer.
