It’s been pointed out before how busy October tends to be, so for those students of statistics, there were 50 Installations conducted during the month with approximately 50 per cent being conducted by the Grand Team and the remainder conducted by 13 approved teams. For those Lodges who have their Installation in October, I ask more of you to consider moving to another month. I’m pleased to report that just a few days ago, our Grand Secretary, RWBro. Peter Henshall made his first appearance in the office since undergoing open heart surgery six weeks ago. He will be easing his

way back into full-time work over the next few weeks. I’m sure every Freemason wishes Peter a continued speedy and full recovery.

In the previous issue I made mention of attending the Blue Ribbon Foundation Charity Ball which was a huge success raising in the order of $100,000. The presence and participation of Freemasons Victoria was duly acknowledged during the evening.

It’s been pointed out before how busy October tends to be, so for those students of statistics, there were 50 Installations conducted during the month with approximately 50 per cent being conducted by the Grand Team and the remainder conducted by 13 approved teams. Congratulations to all the brethren on their selection as members of the 2015 Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team of the United Grand Lodge of Antient, Free and Accepted Masons of Victoria.

This weekend marks the launch of the 2015 Ceremonial Team, with the team getting together with their wives and partners on Saturday night for a team dinner at the Dallas Brooks Centre. Then it will be down to work on Sunday morning with the first training session of the year, while the ladies head off for a relaxing breakfast in the sun with the Grand Master’s wife Sue.

It is a great honour to be selected for the Ceremonial Team from amongst your peers, especially in Victoria where the Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team has an enviable reputation for excellence throughout Australia and the world.

The Ceremonial Team strives for a standard of excellence in ceremonial presentation and conduct that members of the Craft will see as an example to admire and to emulate. As ambassadors for the Grand Master and Grand Lodge, it represents them throughout the year at Installations across the State.

In addition to honour and recognition, being in a Ceremonial Team provides many enjoyable social experiences and opportunities to meet with brethren and others around the State and beyond. Participation in the Ceremonial Team also provides a unique opportunity to develop friendships and to form the sort of strong bonds that come from dedication to a common cause, working closely together, and shared experiences. The satisfaction and enjoyment experienced, as well as the strength of members’ association with one another, will remain long after the active year of office has ended.

Partners and families are a major part of the Team, and are encouraged to participate whenever possible in the activities and events attended throughout the year.

A ball with the boys in blue

The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation held its annual Charity Ball at the Palladium at Crown on Friday 24 October. Freemasons Victoria, represented by members of the Grand Team who

accompanied Grand Master MWBro. Hillel Benedykt and his wife Sue were there to support the event.

The Ball, hosted by well-known television personality John Deeks, was a fabulous night of entertainment, reflection and fundraising, held in the name of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The event is the Foundation’s major fundraiser for the year with proceeds going to the Epworth Hospital’s new Urgent Care Centre, which will benefit many Victorians and be named in the memory of a fallen Police Officer.

Bill Noonan, OAM, Chairman of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation opened the evening, recognising all of the generous supporters who had contributed towards the auction and raffle, and made special mention of all of the volunteers who had made a special effort to enable the event.

“It’s wonderful to see so many supporters gathered together to celebrate two very special groups in our community, the Victoria Police and the Epworth Hospital”, Bill said.

Chief Commissioner Victoria Police Mr Ken Lay’s, address included a video presentation of messages from prominent Australian’s such as Eddie McGuire, Lisa McEwen and social campaigner and youth outreach worker Les Twentyman OAM, who were unable to attend.

Guests enjoyed the sweet sounds of Mint26 over dinner. Babba (an Abba tribute band) made sure all were up and dancing the night away. The major auction, managed by Stockdale and Leggo, was a great success, raising more than $60,000 with items such as a Kokoda Track adventure, Bali accommodation packages and interstate cycling trips up for grabs.

The raffle included a Suzuki Swift GL Navigator, a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator, luxury houseboat cruise and a

wine package. A silent auction, with all items lining the perimeter of the room included football jerseys,

jewellery, concert tickets and beauty packs just to name a few.

A highlight of the evening was the motor display at the entrance to the ballroom. A police vehicle, equipped with all matter of

tracking and communication devices was on display for guests to see and sit in, as well as two

police motorbikes, the larger of which Grand Master MWBro. Hillel Benedykt ‘tried out’.

“It’s remarkable just how much bigger the bikes appear up close!”, he said. “There is a lot of machine to steer and control”.

WBro. Myles King, who was there with his wife Isabella said that the event was very special.

“The night was a great example of what can be achieved when people and organisations work together for a common purpose. Funds raised from the event will contribute to establishing a new emergency area within the Epworth Hospital network with the community being the benefactors. The generosity of the attendees was truly amazing and gave clear demonstration of philanthropy in its purest form”, Myles said.

Delegation visits the Grand Lodge of the Middle East

The delegation of seven senior Freemasons under the leadership of RWBro. Jim Mitchell PDGM attended the Annual Communications of the District Grand Lodge of the Middle East, and have returned

home jubilant at the strength and organisation of Freemasonry in South East Asia and the ever-closer relationship with Victoria.

The high profile delegation was supported by RWBro. Peter Crick PDGM and First Grand Principal Elect of the HRAC, a very strong order on the sub-continent, plus RWBro. Keith Murray GSupWorks and President Elect of the Board of General Purposes; VWBro. Max Murray PGIW; WBro. Kim Lai PJGD, WBro. Stuart Thompson PGStdB and WBro. M.R. Chandran PSDGW [DGLME SC] - all members of SEAVic Lodge, No. 8.

The communications was held in the magnificently appointed Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre. The new iconic building has transformed Singapore’s already stupendous skyline, encompasses a 2500 room hotel, outstanding convention facilities and a world of retailers, restaurants and theatres. Marina Bay Sands is almost a separate city within the city-state of Singapore and is reputed to be the world’s most expensive building.

Singapore itself is a city that is hard to ignore and is listed No. 1 destination by the world’s tourism authorities. Recreated since World War II it is a democratic island state of more than five million citizens drawn from a mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western traditions, boasting cutting edge architecture, dynamic museums and tourist attractions plus a determination to succeed.

The District Grand Lodge of the Middle East, under the enthusiastic leadership of Bro. Dunstan Fernandez, RW District Grand Master, gives consolidation and guidance to Freemasonry in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand and operates under a charter of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.

In proposing the most important toast of the evening ‘To the Grand Lodge of Scotland’ RWBro. Jim sketched the ‘grass roots’ emergence of our fraternity in England, Ireland and Scotland 700 years ago, details of which are dimmed by the mists of time but which resulted in the establishment of a Grand Lodge of Scotland in 1736. The MW Grand Master Mason of Scotland, Bro. Charles Wolridge Gordon of Esselmont being in attendance responded with true Scottish eloquence.

The installation of SEAVic’s Master Elect, RWBro. Keith Murray, will be in Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia, on Saturday 28 March next year, demonstrating the ever increasing bond of fellowship between the Freemasons of Victoria and South East Asia. SEAVic Lodge is a magnificent tribute to the foresight of brothers Keith Thornton and Kim Lai who guided its foundation with this specific goal only eight years ago.

Celebrating Freemasonry in Shepparton

Victorian Delegation – WBros Kim Lai, Stuart Thompson, Keith Murray, Jim Mitchell, Peter Crick and Max Murray with WBro. Ron Crane of the Scottish Delegation.

The new Shepparton Masonic Centre will open its doors to the public on Sunday 16 November, after a long period of refurbishment. The Centre, which was vandalised in March 2013, has been restored, and now incorporates two new commercial tenancies at the front with shared amenities. Careful consideration has been made to recreate the heritage facade of the building.

The event to open the building will Include a dedication to officially acknowledge the start of a new era, hosted by Freemasons Victoria’s Grand Master MWBro. Hillel Benedykt and his team.

Those who would like to attend the dedication are encouraged to arrive at 161 Welsford Street, Shepparton from 3:00pm to get the best seat! The dedication will conclude at 5pm followed by a 2-course dinner with the evening finishing at 8.30pm.

‘Shepparton Lodge No. 498’ was consecrated on 30 September 1932 by MWBro. G.E. Emery. The Lodge was established to provide an opportunity to progress Freemasonry for the many brethren living far from their mother Lodges, and secondly to devoting as many meetings as possible to lectures and discussions on masonic subjects.

Please RSVP by Sunday 9 November toDavid Hayes on 0427 219 532 or [email protected]

James Thompson of Swan Hill Lodge isn’t afraid of a bit of colour! Along with 1000 other runners, RWBro. James participated in the Colour My Run event on Sunday 19 October.

Starting at Riverside Park, participants wearing white began the walk/run marathon with the aim of raising much needed funds for charity group ‘Women Touched by Cancer’. Freemasons Victoria donated $5000 towards Women Touched by Cancer during 2014 as part of its Think Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

Based in Swan Hill, the Women Touched by Cancer group was formed in October 2007, and is made up of very active women who are focused on bringing services to women and families touched by cancer within the local community. An important component of the support group’s role is to guide people to where they can go for help, advice and where to seek funding.

With all participants being prepared to cop every colour under the sun, most got the end of the run looking much more like a rainbow – all in the name of fun and fundraising.

It is estimated that $10,000.00 was raised this year - fantastic effort.

Did you know that prostate cancer is the most common cause of cancer in Australian men and the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men?

One in nine men in Australia will develop prostate cancer in their life time and around 20,000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed every year in Australia.

These are staggering figures, and have prompted Freemasons Victoria to once again, put the call out to all members to take part in Movember this year.

The annual Movember campaign aims to raise awareness about men’s health that leads to men taking action to remain well and prostate cancer-free. By growing your moustache during the month of November, you are pledging your support for the campaign, and by encouraging sponsorship from friends and family, you are helping to raise funds towards the treatment of this awful disease.

Freemasons Victoria has launched a web page in support of Movember 2014. Jump on and register your participation at http://au.movember.com/mospace and grow those mo’s!!In the past Freemasons Victoria has raised thousands of dollars in support of this campaign – let’s do it again!

sThank you meal for Koo-Wee-Rup

The Freemasons Victoria Taskforce is calling for volunteers to help at the Annual Variety Club Christmas Party, Melbourne Exhibition Centre on set-up day Wednesday 10 December from 9:00am - 2:00pm, and on Party Day Thursday 11 December from 7:30am - 3.00pm.

Freemasons Victoria has been helping put smiles on childrens faces for many years now, and this year, our last year, one of our key roles will again be to register all volunteers on both days as well as the entertainers on party day.

There are sit down jobs for those that are not that mobile, and walking jobs for those that can. This is a team effort so every little bit helps.

If you want to see 5000 smiling faces light up, please arrange a Working with Children check. Forms are available at Australia Post or online. The Working with Children check costs nothing for volunteers, just the cost of a passport photo.

Please allow at least two weeks to get your card. (Charity: Freemasons Victoria Item number: 74)

For more information or to volunteer contact Merv Dyer on 0417 344 271.

Koo-Wee-Rup Secondary College Year 10 and 11 students were plating up last week as they put on a special meal for members of Koo-Wee-Rup Lodge No. 323.

On completion of their first year of their VET hospitality course ‘Certificate II in Kitchen Operations’, the students planned and prepared the meal as a ‘thank you’ to Lodge members for their contributions to the school. These contributions have included providing breakfast for students once a month, money for scholarships and lunch for students and staff at the end of the year.

Koo-Wee-Rup Lodge has been donating funds towards the educational needs of Koo-Wee-Rup Secondary College since 2003, and has so far donated a total of $20,000. In the past funds have not only assisted hospitality students, but have also gone towards music and the library.

Time is running out to get your Triple Pin Card now for only $20 from Freemasons Victoria. Wear these pins with pride!

The Grand Lodge Ceremonial Team will be taking these Pin Cards with them to jobs if you would like to purchase them at their next visit. Alternatively, purchase a bundle to sell at your own Lodge.

WBro. Harold William Waite PM was presented with a 65 Year Bar, lapel pin and certificate this year by MWBro. Carl Stewart, PGM.

Harold, who was born in West Brunswick on 19 September 1922, was called up for National Service age 19 for six months, training at Puckapunyal. During this period the Japanese bombed Darwin and Harold finished up serving with the Army for four years in Australia with Transport Section 136.

He later moved to Taggerty at age 27 with his father and older brother Stan. Both Harold and Stan worked with the Forest Commission - Harold retiring at the age 65.

Harold married his wife Dot in 1962 and settled in Alexandra, they had one daughter who is now employed in the Victorian Police Force and assigned to Domestic Violence cases in the Shepparton district. Harold and Dot celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2012. Sadly Dot passed away on 10 July, 2013. Dot was active in the Alexandra community, a member of CWA and Red Cross.

Harold received his 50 Year Jewel in 1998 and his 60 Year Jewel in 2008. He was due for this presentation 12 February 2013, however for a number of reasons the presentation was postponed till this year.

Harold was Initiated and Passed in 1948 and Raised in 1949 at Thespian Lodge No. 232, and in 1950 was a joining member of Albert Edward Lodge No. 59. He was Installed as Worshipful Master of Albert Edward Lodge in 1981.

Since 19 January, 2012 to 21 November, 2013, Harold attended 16 meetings out of 19. He regularly attended rehearsals, delivered charges and was always available to stand in for Office when called on by our Director of Ceremonies.

Harold is also a member of Alexandra Mark Lodge No. 129 and a Past Master of that Lodge. He is still in Office as Register of Marks, and received his 50 Year Jewel in the Mark Lodge in 2009. Harold resigned from Chapter where he was 1st Principal, in 1984 when Chapter closed in Alexandra.

This presentation is well deserved in recognition of Harold’s valuable and committed service to the Craft.

It’s hard to imagine how someone could try to get home without their car keys, or leave the building without their hand bag, but it does happen – so does leaving to go home without your reading glasses!

Freemasons Victoria has enough lost property now to start its own op-shop, but before it does that we thought we would give you the opportunity to come and collect some of these long lost items.

Someone is missing their diamond earrings, and I’m sure the person who has left their jeans here is still wandering around in their underpants. Wallets, watches, scarves and

umbrellas seem to be popular items to misplace, not to mention the 50+ pairs of reading glasses, some in cases, some not. So if you have been wondering all this time where you left your jacket, please call 9411 0100!

Lost something??
