Making sure everyone on a team knows what they are working toward and everyone is pulling in the same direction, is the foundation for engagement. The next step is to regularly review team and individual progress. Talking about progress has a number of benefits. In addition to ensuring that teams and individuals are on track, conversations about progress can identify potential barriers to goal accomplishment, so those barriers that can then be removed. Conversations also can reveal areas in which an employee needs additional support from the team or the manager. They can also reduce the risk that an issue needing attention doesn’t get addressed before an employee starts to disengage. How often should progress be reviewed? Is every six months a magic number? Find out in next week’s issue!
Engagement Challenge:
Your progress is defined by steps. What are your 1-year, 2-year, and 5-year plans? You may find that by defining it this way, your goals seem more attainable. Share your ambitions with us. Email [email protected].

Engagement & Community
Central Pennsylvania District Loves the Kids
Employee Engagement in Central Pennsylvania District took an interesting route recently when
both Valarie Carl, full-time driver safety instructor and former city carrier in Hershey, PA; and
Jeff Cleary, ad-hoc driver safety instructor and currently a full-time city carrier in the Lebanon,
PA, Post Office visited the Goddard School in Hummelstown, PA.
Goddard School Assistant Director Gina Esposito invited Carl and Cleary to visit and speak to
them about the Postal Service and what it is like to be a letter carrier. Approximately 120
preschool and early grade children were on hand for thevisit. Carl and Cleary talked about
getting to work outside in the snow, the travel of a letter, and staying away from vehicles to
ensure safety. Some children were concerned how we help Santa receive all those letters on
time. When Carl and Cleary spoke about the thousands of packages that come in the mail, the
children couldn’t wait to tell how they’ve received packages like Legos from Amazon. The
teachers were amazed how many miles carriers walk in a day and throughout their careers.
Carl and Cleary brought a new ProMaster vehicle to show the children along with postal coloring
books, which the school’s assistant director said the kids LOVED. Some of the classrooms even
wrote their own letters so they could “play mail delivery” later that day.
This was a great opportunity to educate youngsters in the community and bring out the best in
the Postal Service.
