Speaker Biographies

Josephine Amory, MD

Josephine Amory is a board certified physician with Palliative Care Services at UW Medical Center and a UW assistant professor of Family Medicine. Dr. Amory provides supportive care to families and infants in the Neonatal ICU. Palliative care is an extra layer of support for patients and families experiencing significant medical illness. For families of newborns in the ICU, hospitalization is an extraordinarily stressful and complicated time. She feels her role as a palliative care provider is to support newborns, families and staff as they navigate these challenges together. Dr. Amory earned her bachelor’s degree with honors from Princeton and her M.D. from UC San Francisco. She is triple board certified in Maternal & Fetal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Hospice & Palliative Care. Her clinical interests include goals of care discussions and teaching best practices in communication to physicians and staff. In her free time Dr. Amory enjoys swimming, hiking, backpacking, reading and spending time with family.

Chris Espersen, MSPH

Chris is a quality consultant working with healthcare and public health organizations across the nation, providing technical assistance around new initiatives, data fidelity, patient engagement and quality improvement. Prior to her consultant work, Espersen was the quality director at an FQHC in the Midwest. Chris has provided training and TA both domestically and to groups in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. She is an adjunct instructor at Drake University where she teaches Social Determinants of Health. Espersen speaks nationally on a variety of topics including value based payment, social determinants of health, patient and family engagement, and topics related to data driven quality improvement. She is co-chair of the legislatively created Patient Centered Health Advisory Council and is asked to participate on many healthcare transformation and equity committees. She is primarily interested in reducing healthcare disparities among underserved populations and in fostering patient empowerment.

Cecily Froemke, Ph.D

Cecily is currently an analytics leader at Providence St. Joseph Health. She is an out of the box systems thinker and general problem solver who finds joy in working with others to define a problem out of ambiguity and identify optimal solutions. Problems extend across both the technical and organizational levels and approaches necessarily require attention to the whole system and its inter-dependencies. Cecily's experience includes robust software and healthcare industry background - working with internal and external partners building real-world end-to-end analytic solutions. She holds a Master's and Doctorate in Systems Science and has a wide range of education and experience as a general problem solver, particularly engaging in problems requiring optimization.

Renee Gilbert, Ph.D

A Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Bellevue Washington, Dr. Gilbert holds a Doctoral Degree in Clinical-Community Psychology from the University of Maryland and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from the University of Washington. A devout life-long learner she’s always studying something, but is particularly proud of training she received in E-Learning Development & Design, Brain Research in Education, and Web Technology Solutions, all at the University of Washington. She has been actively involved in the development of social skills training programs which she’s shared with others through her therapy practice, educational training programs, and speaking engagements since the 1980’s. In 2001, in an effort to reach more people, Dr. Gilbert launched her now widely respected public service website entitled Shake Your Shyness—a website dedicated to helping people overcome shyness and social anxiety through education. At last count, which was years ago, the site had reached hundreds of thousands of people, prompting Dr. Gilbert to feel she could do more. Part techie, part clinician part teacher, and part researcher, her primary goal is moving forward is to identify empirically based technological strategies capable of increasing patient accessibility and compliance without sacrificing quality of service. Jeffrey Grice, MD Senior Associate Medical Director, Member Experience, Service Quality, and Brand Washington Permanente Medical Group, P.C.

Jeffrey Grice, MD, serves as Senior Associate Medical Director, Member Experience, Service Quality, and Brand at the Washington Permanente Medical Group (formerly Group Health Permanente). He also oversees the Washington Permanente Medical Group’s (WPMG) transition to Kaiser Permanente to ensure a consistent member experience. Prior to returning to WPMG in December 2016, Dr. Grice served as the Vice President of People & Leadership Strategy and Permanente Marketing at The Permanente Federation. He has worked with each of the Permanente Medical Groups in support of their inter-regional work on brand identity, human resources, training and development, and physician wellness. Before he joined The Federation in 2015, Dr. Grice was the Medical Director of Clinical Excellence and Integration for WPMG. He was responsible for WPMG’s multispecialty group practice, overseeing quality, safety, and service programs. He also led human resources planning, performance evaluation, staff development, and compliance for the WPMG clinicians. He previously served as chief of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and managed the Capitol Hill Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Grice’s clinical and teaching experience includes serving as faculty for The Permanente Federation’s Medicine & Management program; as a clinical instructor at the University of Washington School of Medicine; and as a clinical associate at the WPMG Research Institute. Dr. Grice earned his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and served in residencies at the University of Washington in obstetrics and gynecology and Virginia Mason Medical Center’s pelvic surgery and oncology fellowship. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

Charlotte W. Lewis, MD, MPH Washington Medical Commission 2nd Vice Chair, Congressional District 7

Charlotte W. Lewis, MD, MPH, is attending physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital and associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Her primary research interest is disparities in health and health-care access, with a specific focus on oral health and access to dental care.

Her research has involved documenting disparities in access to oral health services for low-income and special needs children as well as developing and evaluating strategies to improve pediatric oral health through expanded pediatrician and family physician involvement in these areas.

Alden Roberts, MD

A native of Louisiana, he received his MD from Louisiana State University before completing his general surgery residency at the University of Southern California. Dr. Roberts has worked in private practice with the Burbank Surgery Medical group, Vancouver General Surgeons, Columbia Surgical Group and the Northwest Permanente PC Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Roberts was the chief medical officer of the PeaceHealth Columbia Network in Vancouver, WA. In 2011 he received a Master’s Degree in Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University and in 2013 received the Southwest Washington Medical Center Circle of Excellence award.

Donna L. Smith, MD, MBA Executive Medical Director Patient Care Services, Virginia Mason Medical Center

As Executive Medical Director Patient Care Services, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Dr. Smith has operational oversight responsibility for the Departments of Primary Care, Medicine, Surgery, Pathology and Radiology. She currently serves as executive sponsor for organization wide goals of Opioids, Access and Patient Experience. Dr. Smith joined Virginia Mason in 1995. She received her medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1985 and completed her internship and residency at Seattle Children's Hospital. She is a past president of the medical staff at Seattle Children’s Hospital and current President of the Washington State Medical Association. Dr. Smith maintains a clinical practice in addition to her leadership roles in the medical center. She has served as chief of Pediatrics, Hospital Medical Director, a member of the Virginia Mason Board, Executive Team, Finance Committee and numerous quality and safety committees improving care for patients. holds a faculty position at the University of Washington. Since its inception in 2001, Dr. Smith has taken an active leadership role in the Virginia Mason Production System (VMPS), a management method that seeks to continually improve how care is provided. Gregory Terman, MD

Gregory Terman, M.D., Ph.D., is a board certified anesthesiologist and director of the Acute Pain Service at UW Medical Center. He is also a UW professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. Guiding patients to walk the line between reducing pain so they can function is what pain management is all about. Dr. Terman enjoys helping patients accomplish this balancing act in the peri-operative setting, where both pain and pain medicines can have serious medical effects on the patient's overall health. Dr. Terman earned his M.D. at the University of Miami and his Ph.D. at UCLA. He is a member of the UW Graduate Program in Neuroscience and has run an NIH funded laboratory studying pain mechanisms. Dr. Terman is past president of the American Pain Society. His recent research has focused on the mechanisms and neurochemistry of opiate tolerance. In his free time Dr. Terman enjoys Seattle sports in general and Husky sports in particular.

Clair Trescott, MD

Dr. Trescott spent over two decades at Group Health Cooperative, where she practiced as a staff physician, served as Medical Director of Silverdale Urgent Care and most recently spent nine years as Medical Director of Primary Care. She spearheaded operations statewide for 26 primary care clinics, seven behavioral health clinics, a family medicine residency, and multiple occupational medicine clinics. She led over 400 physicians and helped to transform statewide health care systems to ensure the highest quality of care for more than 400,000 patients. Dr. Trescott collaborated with Group Health Research Institute to

Dr. Trescott was recently appointed as a medical commissioner on the State of Washington’s Medical Commission. She is a respected national speaker and change agent known for driving profoundly positive results while reducing costs. She received Seattle Business Magazine’s 2014 Outstanding Healthcare Executive Silver Award for her work in standardizing opioid prescribing practices. She has also received the 2012 Birnbaum Innovation Award from the Group Health Research Institute, the 2009 Team Excellence Award and Beekman Leadership Award from the Group Health Cooperative, and the Birnbaum Award for Supporting Research in 2008.

Jeffrey Weisz, MD Managing Principal and Consulting Physician

Dr. Jeffrey Weisz is a Managing Principal and Consulting Physician at Sullivan, Cotter and Associates, Inc. With over 37 years of combined experience as both a practicing Hematologist-Oncologist and an Executive Medical Director, Dr. Weisz is an accomplished physician leader and a passionate advocate of patient-centered care. His commitment to improving affordable health care through clinical quality, service-oriented and accessible care has earned many of the nation’s highest awards for exceptional health outcomes. physicians serving 525,000 members. He also served as the Executive Medical Director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, one of the largest medical groups in the United States, where he led his organization to the top of the nation in a host of patient care performance measures. During his time at Kaiser Permanente, he helped to launch a number of innovative programs and quality and service initiatives aimed at improving access and efficiency, as well as lowering the cost of care. Dr. Weisz is also the successful author of It’s a Great Time to be a Physician: Building a Healthcare System that Works, which provides health system leaders with both guidance and practical approaches for navigating the changes in the health care industry as strategic imperatives continue to evolve. He received both his BA and MD from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI before completing his residency at the Henry Ford Medical Center and his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.

John D. Wynn, MD, DFAPA

Dr. John Wynn is a Seattle psychiatrist, physician educator and organizational consultant.

Dr. Wynn received his BA in Philosophy from Yale College and MD degree from the University of Illinois. He is Board-certified in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Wynn was founding Medical Director for Supportive Care Services at the Swedish Cancer Institute of Seattle, the largest provider of cancer care in the Pacific Northwest (2000-2016).

Former faculty of the UCLA Center for the Study of Organizational and Group Dynamics (1988-90) and the Academy of Organizational and Occupational Psychiatry (1997-1998), Dr. Wynn has addressed workplace resilience, collaboration, motivation, and leadership with clients in manufacturing, healthcare, government and the professions. His teaching activities span a range from mental health at work to leadership development and management coaching for physicians, directors and executives.

Widely recognized as a leader in the care and education of physicians, he has served as a resource to organizations promoting the well-being of physicians, including the American College of Physicians, the Institute of Medicine, Swedish Health Services, and the Washington Physicians Health Program, where he sits on (and formerly chaired) the Board of Directors.
