I began studying the Textile Coloration Certificate as part of the Dyers Apprenticeship in

2014. I chose to do this apprenticeship due to my interest in textiles and my ability for chemistry. The content of the course was extremely relevant to my position as a Dyeing

Technician and I was lucky enough to have genuinely knowledgeable and helpful tutors over the three year

course. Studying the Textile Coloration Certificate through the Dyers Apprenticeship scheme has given me

the opportunity to gain physical skills that I wouldn’t have learnt through studying alone. It has also allowed

me to meet lifelong friends in the industry and given me the academic ability to continue

towards further education.

What is it the SDC does? The answer to this question lies in our governing documents and especially the Royal Charter. It is from that the SDC mission statement of Educating a Changing World in the Science of Colour is derived. Planning by SDC staff and the SDC Board over the past year has very much had this in mind as they have looked to the future. Those discussions have culminated in a strategy that is about the Lifelong Colour Education Pathway of our members and also our much wider group of beneficiaries.

Looking to the future

The impact of this has already started to be felt but will become more evident over 2017. The delivery mechanisms of the SDC are being further developed to enable us to reach a wider group of people across the whole of their careers with more and more relevant material on colour available at a time and location to satisfy end users.

These new developments will deliver a virtual learning environment on colour across the world. Let us pause for a moment though to consider where the SDC currently is positioned, since Engaging with Colour is both a retrospective and forward looking publication. The SDC already is producing quality engagement in a very large number of areas. This document and the SDC Annual Report and Accounts cover that in a lot of detail I will not attempt to even summarise here except to say we start this Lifelong Colour Education Pathway from a very good place already. Without resorting to comparisons it is very evident the SDC is leading as others start to follow.

Resources, including people (staff, members and volunteers) and finances are the valuable items we have to manage. With more finance, used wisely, that can accelerate the development process and this concept is often referred to as the additionality of funding. What additionally does that funding unlock?

The SDC is very grateful the Cotton Industry War Memorial Trust and the Worshipful Company of Dyers are providing funding that will enable additionality in the development of our Lifelong Colour Education Pathway. The future of the SDC has been accelerated over the next years by their very welcome support. Their support will also enable improved quality and scope of delivery of colour education also.

In recent years the SDC has been working hard and continuously to reduce expenditure and I would not want to skip past that in this look at the future. Expenditure savings have been made in many areas and the changes are very much sustainable, so savings that are here to stay. The expenditure savings have also had minimal impact on delivery, so smart savings also. Indeed, there is more we can do but as time goes by the savings we can deliver get smaller and smaller. This now means we are also focusing on income development. The Lifelong Colour Education Pathway is going to help with that greatly, but its existence alone will not achieve that - we need to tell people and recommend the SDC to them.

In order to grow we need your help. Please share this document with your network and colleagues. Get them along to SDC events and engaged with our Lifelong Colour Education Pathway as it is rolled out. Ask them to join the SDC, which they can do online, at any time, and pay in a number of different currencies in our growing user focused engagement. The SDC future looks very bright and colourful indeed.

Being a part of the SDC has been beneficial for me as a dyeing technician,

allowing me to network with other members and specialists in the field. It has also given me

the opportunity to attend subject specific lectures which have only deepened my interest for textiles further. Being a member of the SDC has been very

beneficial in establishing my career in the textile manufacturing industry and I am

grateful the SDC exists.

The focus for development is a Lifelong Colour Education Pathway. During 2016 staff consulted with members and presented their vision for SDC education to regional representatives at an International Day. The process culminated in a staff/trustee Strategy Planning Day.

Lifelong Colour Education Pathway

The focus for the pathway is colour science education, spanning all ages and career stages from early years through formal education and employment into retirement for the technical dyeing/textile sectors and the textile design sector.

At the core of the plan is the development of a range of new and updated educational resources.

The technical and design pathways are linked through SDC’s Education, Qualifications and Accreditation Board (EQAB).

Development of a Virtual Learning Environment At the heart of the teaching is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). A VLE, or learning platform, is an online system that allows the sharing of educational materials via the web.

The VLE is a modular based approach which allows people to tailor their learning, depending on their career stage and interests.

The VLE will include high quality teaching resources, online assessment, plus individual topics and modules leading to a formal qualification.

Design pathwaySDC has worked with designers over a number of years, and the development of a formal qualification pathway is the next logical step. Consultation during 2016 highlighted many of those with a design background lack the key coloration skills and qualifications needed for industry.

The design pathway development plan includes:

• Formationofaworkinggroup

• Consultationwithacademiaandindustry

• TheInternationalDesignCompetitionaskeyinthedeliveryofcontent and in creating a pool of students

• Developmentofastructuredsyllabus,standaloneorleadingultimately to a Design Coloration Certificate

Technical pathway Textile Coloration Certificate (TCC)TCC provides the first steps on a young person’s professional education in coloration. It gives them the fundamental knowledge required, preparing them for further education with the SDC.

Now in its sixth year it continues to educate people from a diverse range of textile coloration companies.

The course begins with the Foundation Textile Coloration Certificate (FTCC), a one year foundation course followed by a further two years studying for the TCC qualification. This provides the basis to be able to continue on to take their ASDC qualifications.

2016 saw a quarter of the students complete their studies towards TCC under the Livery Company Apprenticeship scheme where the students were supported by the Worshipful Company of Dyers financially and through a mentoring scheme.

A new award, the SDC Certificate of High Achievement was instigated to reflect the high level of commitment by the students on this course.

I chose TCC as it was an industry recognised course, which taught a broad range

of topics tailored specifically for the coloration of textiles, at every stage of the textiles pipeline. TCC has allowed me to develop and hone both my knowledge

and skills, by learning more about the theory and science behind the processes. I have thoroughly enjoyed TCC and would encourage aspiring colourists to take the course.

For me TCC has undoubtedly already helped advance my career. I have made lifelong friends and been

given the opportunity to meet inspiring figures within the industry. I am incredibly grateful to be receiving the high achievement award, which is the cherry

on top of what has been such a rewarding experience.

Qualifications The SDC offers qualifications of Licentiateship (LSDC), Associateship (ASDC), Fellowship (FSDC) and Chartered Colourist (CCol) and these rightly are the pinnacle of qualifications for anyone working within the coloration industry. For those starting on their career path they are aspirational and form a major part of the SDC’s educational pathway.

EQAB are the guardians of quality in awarding qualifications. In 2016 it undertook a major review of the qualifications. Its first step was a benchmarking exercise of the ASDC qualification as to the level of the award. This was undertaken by NARIC, The National Recognition Information Centre for the United Kingdom. NARIC undertook an in-depth benchmarking exercise and concluded the ASDC is comparable to FHEQ Level 6 and the range of topic areas assessed correspond to the subject knowledge expected for that topic in UK Bachelor Honours degree programmes.

A review of the syllabus was also started and Trustee Board approval was obtained to offer a revised ASDC syllabus through the VLE in 2017.

In addition, EQAB also undertook an accreditation of a course as being equivalent to ASDC. The successful course accredited is the MSc Textiles developed and run by Leeds University, School of Design.

2016 has been a busy year of festivals, discovery and partnership building. The Colour Experience team have been out and about engaging with a huge variety of learners, from nursery children to special interest groups and every age in between.

Colour Experience

Our offsite engagement has proved to be hugely popular. The Colour Experience attended the nationwide multi science festival for young people TeenTech in Doncaster and Hull, worked alongside STEM ambassadors on Chemistry at Work days, engaged with over 1,500 children at BigBang Teeside, worked with the Stroudwater Textile Trust to promote the science of colour and attended the hugely popular Otley Science festival to name but a few. All this alongside welcoming hundreds of visitors to workshops at Perkin House.

Our Malcolm the Weaver project has gone from strength to strength with 1,825 sponsored books going into schools across the UK and as far as Australia and Ethiopia. The first two books in the series Weaver of a Life in Colour and The Rainbow that Mixed Colours / The Moon that Shone Dark are to be joined by a third in the series The Tide that Stayed Out / The Wind that did not Blow. We are extremely grateful to all our sponsor companies and look forward to educating even more 4 – 8 year olds in the science and emotion of colour.

Looking forward, the Colour Experience team have been invited for the first time to take part in the Cheltenham Science Festival, Big Bang North East and Deershed Festival, bringing colour science to a whole new audience. We are partnering with The National Science and Media Museum to bring the Bradford Science Festival to life. In 2017 we will be running a series of events to build interest and promote the event for 2018.

We are also very excited to be working with our colleagues to enrich our lifelong learning pathway, bringing the Colour Experience expertise in engaging with learners from very young to very old. We will be working on a series of web content, videos and interactive experiences to bring the SDC Lifelong Colour Education Pathway to life.

If you would like to chat about any of the work that the Colour Experience deliver, book a workshop or visit our fantastic interactive gallery email us at [email protected].

The Colour Experience would like to thank The Cotton War Memorial Trust for its continued support.

Our thanks also go to Graham Alcock for his continued community engagement work with special interest groups and to SDC member Bill Stevenson for his work as Colour Experience Champion.

The SDC Bursary Scheme offers students the opportunity of a financial boost to help in their research while at university or college. The key is that the application must show a significant element of colour in their research approach and is further helped if this use is innovative and will involve some learning. The award is willing to fund the purchase of books which would be donated to the library of the learning institute for the use of future generations.

Bursaries

Applications are welcome from both the design and technical side of coloration and both are supported equally as a means of bridging the gap between the two disciplines. All awardees must provide a final report and on many occasions the work has featured in the SDC’s publications when the work has been outstanding or particularly interesting.

The organisation of the Colour Index™ is carried out by working with industry and associated industry bodies such as the Color Pigments Manufacturers Association (CPMA) and ETAD.

New innovative structures are being registered within the database and new companies are registering some of these products. A major piece of work concerning structures as identified under the requirements of REACH was begun at the request of a number of manufacturers of certain products to ensure that the content of the Colour Index™ is representative of the best available knowledge on structures and formulas.

The Colour Index™ is the world’s most authoritative method of colorant classification system available internationally. It is used by industry, governments, legislators, regulators, universities and research institutes in day to day activities and in innovative research to provide a basis for a long term future for the coloration industry.

SDC competitions nurture and encourage engagement with colour. Each year we engage with hundreds of students globally, encouraging the creative and original use of colour. Our student competitions help the entrants develop their understanding of colour and the challenges around sustainability in the textile industry.

The workshop made me think more about colour in research field not only as a design tool. Also made me remember that we are so dependent on colour and

eyesight that other senses seem often

unimportant.

Very interesting workshop - thought provoking design led research into colour

that you don’t necessarily consider

day to day.

SDC works extensively with volunteers – members and others – across the spectrum of activities and services that we offer.

Volunteers

Trustees, honorary officers, regional officers and committee members globally give their time and expertise in pursuit of SDC’s mission.

Speakers deliver presentations at regional, national and international SDC events imparting knowledge and advice to those who attend. Volunteers internationally give their time and expertise to support SDC competitions, organising local heats and judging the entries. Coloration Technology benefits from the expertise of the many individuals who peer review the papers.

The Colour Experience is supported by placements each year from the Education Studies course at Bradford College; a Colour Experience Champion who delivers presentations to schools in the South East of England and an advocate who delivers presentations to a wide range of community groups.

We welcome new volunteers in a range of different areas. If you’re interested in supporting the work of SDC, please get in touch with [email protected].

SDC Enterprises

Standards

30 colour.sdc.org.uk

SDC holds the secretariat for both the BSI and ISO committees responsible for Colour Fastness and Colour Measurement (TCI 81 and TC38 SC1 respectively). Contracts to hold these were renewed in 2016 and SDC took on the responsibility of the ISO secretariat from our partner in China who has organised the committees for the past three years. The SDC also has representatives on a number of other BSI committees and regularly comments on standards where colour is mentioned be this in safety of toys or in identification of substances. In 2016 the SDC once again was part of the team that reviewed the GOTS standard and this was done through the Soil Association.

SDC Enterprises is a wholly owned subsidiary of the SDC. The consolidated results of SDC Enterprises Group (incorporating SDCE Enterprises Limited (SDCE) and Sam Weller and Sons Limited (SW)) once again show a continuing strong financial performance, which has been further improved by the acquisition of Sam Weller.

As forecast, in the acquisition business plan, the contribution of funds to the Society was reduced by 14% from 2015, but this still represents a 4% increase above the agreed budget.

Enterprises continued to experience favourable market conditions, and this, combined with the falling value of sterling in the second half of the year, boosted export driven sales beyond the existing manufacturing capacity. Stocks were put under severe strain, however, with the help of resources from SW, production capacity was increased to meet the demand.

In addition to the successes achieved through the acquisition and the subsequent integration of SW, Enterprises also relocated its entire operations to the SW manufacturing site.

Enterprises current growth strategy, and the supporting finance and investment plans, are budgeted to run until 2019. During this period the total contribution of funds from Enterprises to the Society is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 7.5%. Whilst this restricts the Society’s income in the short-term, the aim remains, not only to grow, but to do so in a diverse way that spreads and reduces the risk to the Society’s income, ensuring its sustainability for the long-term.
