ROUND VALLEY ANIMAL RESCUE

The pet of the week is Ellie May, a wonderful and very sweet 10-month large-breed mix.

She loves to go for walks and hang out with people. Ellie May knows a dog door too.

You can visit her at the shelter Tuesday - Saturday between 10 & 4.

Cheer up! Did you know that although popular reports and individuals themselves often claim to gain 7-10 pounds over the holidays, studies show that it’s closer to 1 pound? That’s news to enjoy!

Gardening in January?! It’s Never to Early to Plan

If you are like other avid gardeners in our area, you never stop dreaming about and planning your garden - new plants to try this year, seeds that need to be started indoors, a bet-ter way to fertilize, optimal ways to save seeds, finding new recipes to cook from your garden or ways to prepare your herbs for use throughout the year.

There are several key factors to keep in mind when plan-ning a new garden. Although our local areas share many commonalities, it is important to consider the different micro-environments around your property - is there shade throughout most of the day in that particular spot? No shade at all? Does the water run through that area during monsoon? Are there animals around that may trample or sample your garden? Some larger issues to consider are the hardiness zone for plants, water availability, soil makeup, slope, light, and wind. Again, keep each area’s micro-climate in mind as well, and you’ll be happier with your results.

According to the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, the Eagar/Springerville area falls into what’s known as Zone 6a, a place where plants can survive occasional temperatures of -10 to -5 (F). This rating means that when you find peren-nials, bushes, or trees for your garden, you need to be sure you choose plants that are rated for Zone 6 or below or they probably won’t survive their first harsh, high-altitude winter. Annuals and vegetables are typically planted every year, so hardiness rating doesn’t really apply.

Check back in during the following weeks for more high-altitude gardening tips and advice.

NASA NEWS The New Horizons mission recently sent back images of an object in the Kuiper Belt. The object has been named Ultima Thule. According to NASA, “Thule was a mythical, far-northern island in medi-eval literature and cartography. Ultima Thule means ‘beyond Thule’– beyond the borders of the known world—symboliz-ing the exploration of the distant Kuiper Belt and Kuiper Belt objects that New Horizons is performing, something never before done.” The object orbits a billion miles past Pluto. - NASA.gov
