Lift Light, Shovel Right.
Ten tips for maintaining a
healthy back
1. Exercise regularly 2. Follow a healthy diet 3. Maintain good posture 4. Stretch your spine before and
after sports 5. Don’t overload your backpack
or shoulder bag
6. Stretch your legs and back after each hour of sitting
7. Never cradle the phone between your neck and shoulder
8. Sleep on your back or side, not on your stomach
9. Invest in a good chair, pillow and mattress
10. Have regular spinal check-ups
Stay safe this season When you consider that a shovelful of snow weighs 5 to 7 pounds, you realize how much weight you have to lift to clear your sidewalk or driveway — on average, several hundred pounds! These tips will help keep your back in top shape:
Don’t let the snow pile up: If the weather report calls for several days of snow, frequent shoveling will allow you to move smaller amounts of snow at once.
Pick the right shovel: Use a lightweight pusher-type shovel. If you are using a metal shovel, spray it with Teflon first, so snow won’t stick to it.
Push, don’t throw: Always push the snow to the side rather than throwing it. That way you avoid lifting heavy shovelfuls of snow, and sudden twisting or bending
Bend your knees: If you find you have to lift a shovelful of snow, use your knees and your leg and arm muscles to do the pushing and lifting, while keeping your back
Warm up: Before tackling any strenuous activity take the time to warm up with some overall conditioning (a 10- to 15-minute walk, even on the spot, should do it), followed by some simple stretching.
Take a break: If you feel tired or short of breath, stop and take a rest. Shake out your arms and legs. Stop shoveling immediately if you feel chest pain or back pain. If you have back pain that is severe or that persists for more than a day after shoveling, see a chiropractor. If you have chest pain that is severe, see a medical doctor immediately

Dr. Quesnele Makes his Return to KIROMEDICA Health Centre
After a 9-‐month leave of absence, Dr. Quesnele is making his return to KIROMEDICA this September. We are excited to welcome him home, and share his experiences of working with the World Heath Organization with his new existing patients.

KIROMEDICA Health Centre is very pleased to announce the return of Dr. Jairus Quesnele to the KIROMEDICA team.
Dr. Quesnele was recently selected for the first WHO-WFC Collaborative Fellowship position, a shared program between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation of Chiropractic, at WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. He has spent the last 8-months consulting and assisting in the International Classification of Disease (ICD) 11 Revision, a project he continues to be actively involved in.
In 2010 Dr. Quesnele graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) and was accepted into a two-year post-graduate-residency program in clinical sciences, at CMCC. While in this program, he had the unique opportunity to manage and treat patients within the Department of Family and Community Medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital as well other hospitals around the GTA. It is the goal of the clinical sciences residency program to develop chiropractic clinic consultants, researchers, and clinicians capable of excelling in multidisciplinary environments.

Upon completing the clinical sciences residency, Dr. Quesnele became a Fellow of the College of Chiropractic Sciences.
He has several peer-reviewed publications and has presented and won prestigious international awards for his research. Driving Dr. Quesnele’s research involvement is a profound desire to provide evidence-based patient centered care to his patients. He also emphasizes collaboration between health care professionals to ensure that his patients are receiving the best possible care.
Dr. Quesnele offers a patient centered approach to chiropractic care. “My goal is to educate patients about their problem; formulate a plan with my patients to help reduce the risk of recurrent bouts of pain; guide them in self-management strategies; and reduce their symptoms with the end goal of enhancing their function.” To accomplish this, Dr. Quesnele weighs the best treatment options suited for each patient’s unique needs.
Dr. Quesnele is accepting new patients and is available Monday to Saturday weekly.
