THE CHALLENGE
The ENGINUITY 2018 Competition provides management and
leadership training that is relevant and appropriate for construction professionals worldwide.
Participants are given the opportunity to experience the challenges that face their corporate management, and pits them against their
colleagues and peers in a unique business management challenge.
Using a sophisticated computer simulation, competing teams are given the task of
managing a fledgling UK-based global construction business from 2018 onwards.
OVERVIEW
2
STRATEGY AND DECISION MAKING
To grow the business the new management team will need to devise an
effective business strategy, and implement it by making decisions in a number of key areas, including finance, marketing, overheads,
procurement and job progression.
Decisions are made for a period, representing 3 months, or a quarter,
in the real world.
ASSESSING PERFORMANCE
A league table is used to measure the relative performance of each
team, using a number of Key Performance Indicators.
The league table is published on the website at the end of each round,
but only shows the total of each team’s KPIs.
3

TARGET AUDIENCE
TESTIMONIAL
"From the very first moment I heard about the Enginuity Competition I knew it would be a
stimulating challenge full of learning, networking, competitiveness and enjoyment. Indeed, I have developed my commercial awareness and gained essential business
management skills.
What makes Enginuity so unique is that you are managing a global construction business,
which is relevant both for our business, and most of the sponsors of other teams taking part.
The simulation allows participants to manage resources and understand the importance of contract completion and financial implications of delays. On the bidding side, I learned
how to estimate project risks and translate them into financial perspective as part bid submission while maintaining competitiveness on the market.
Team meetings are a great opportunity to develop soft skills such as communication and presentation, networking and team building. These are only a few aspects of learning and
training relevant to continuous professional and personal development objectives that a participant can benefit from during competition.
Enginuity helped me better understand many facets of global engineering business
management and I would recommend it to any emerging professional as well as experienced engineers seeking to develop their Business management skills."

THE STORY SO FAR
2017: "NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS" ARE CROWNED CHAMPIONS
The international field of 200+ teams included entrants from the UK, Europe, Middle
East, Asia Pacific and the Americas, emphasising the wide ranging and global appeal of the Enginuity competition.
After the 8 weekly Preliminary Rounds, which took place between March and April, 12 teams qualified for the Final, with the largest sponsor WSP well represented, along with
teams from Beca, MWH now part of Stantec, Parsons Corporation, Ramboll and the Robert Bird Group.
The finalists were spread globally, with 1 from Australia, 3 teams from the UK, 3 from New Zealand and 5 from the United States.
With just over 200 points between the finalists, another highly competitive final was in
store.
The final, played over a further 6 rounds, saw lots of ups and downs, but ultimately it was
"Never Tell Me The Odds" from WSP who deservedly emerged victorious as the ENGINUITY 2017 Champions, and the first winning team from the United States.
The members of the winning team, Vincent Favale, Brendan Tyler, Matthew Beller
and Joseph Salvo, each received a cash prize, engraved crystal award and certificate of achievement.
