    Nephew.

    Sir Walter Raleighs Expedition

Two natives were persuaded to return to

    England with Raleigh.

They helped to generate excitement about

exploration and settlement in North America.

1585 Raleigh, who was favored by Queen

Elizabeth I, was granted a charter

(permission to establish a temporarysettlement) on the island of Roanoke.

    The silver cup incident.

When a colonist found his silver cup missing,he immediately blamed the nearby Native

Americans. To show their force the English burned the

    village to the ground.

This event ruined the relationship between the

settlers and the Native Americans. The settlers would now have to fend for

    themselves.

    Settling Roanoke

The next spring, the settlers began

growing impatient with the slow arrival of

    their relief.

Sir Francis Drake happened to be in the

area and agreed to let the settlers ride on

    his boat back to England.

What do you think Drake was doing?

    Settling Roanoke

The next relief expedition did not arrive foranother three years in 1590. Why so late?

Because in 1588 the Spanish Armada and

English navy began fighting. This occupiedall available English vessels.

In 1590, when John White arrived, the

colony had been abandoned with no traceof any settlers. The only sign was the wordCroatoan carved into a door frame.
