Steelsafe ropes benefit applications where high strength with low weight is key. Made from Dyneema® fibres, the ropes offer solutions to the issues of handling and safety associated with steel wire or aramid ropes. Used extensively in offshore, subsea and industry operations the key performance points are the advanced safety characteristics of handling a soft and light textile rope over a stiff and heavy wire rope. Steelsafe ropes have low elongation and low energy storage so do not exhibit dangerous ‘snap back’ in the event of a sudden load release.

Ropes are a torsionally neutral 12 strand construction. We apply special post-production treatment to set the rope and fix it by the addition of English Braids U-coat.

For applications where ropes have a core and cover, other coatings are available. Special note should be taken of English Braids L-Coat that allows a greater bonding of the two parts of the rope allowing them to work as one. The Dyneema® SK75/78 range is also available in the XPS version of the product to realise the full potential of the Dyneema® properties and increasing strength to diameter ratio.

XPS 75/78 ropes are supplied effectively in a worked state and will retain the low extension

unless the rope construction is disturbed by, for example, unwarranted handling or splicing. Splices will need bedding in. Typical settlement extension of a back splice is 2-4%. Once ropes are bedded in, recoverable extension at working load is minimal, typically 0.6% or less. Extension due to creep is not normally relevant due to the load required being above 80% of the rope strength, whereas the designed rope tensile load should be significantly lower. Creep only occurs over long periods and is accelerated by increased ambient temperature. SK78 ropes have higher creep resistance than SK75 and allow ropes to work at a higher load proportion.

Meeting the ever-increasing demands of industry is where Dyneema® fibres excel, recently developed Dyneema® SK90 addresses the challenges associated with higher load applications. SK90 fibre has increased tenacity allowing the end user to achieve higher breaking loads for the same diameter, or lower diameters with lower weight yet equivalent breaking strains.

The 20-year reputation of Dyneema® inside long-lasting ropes is legendary in demanding marine applications. Like all Dyneema® fibres, SK90 is virtually impervious to dilute reagents, salt water, UV rays and is positively buoyant.

The higher the strength the lower the proportion of working loads on the rope and therefore the lower the extension. With higher strength comes improved abrasion resistance too.

Ropes are a torsionally neutral 12 strand construction. English Braids apply a special post production treatment to set the rope and to maintain the properties. This process is then fixed and protected through the application of the English Braids U-Coat.

Again, as with the rest of the Dyneema® family, Dyneema® SK90 is offered in the XPS 90 version to realise the full potential of the Dyneema® properties. Ropes are supplied effectively in a worked state and will retain the

low extension unless the rope construction is disturbed by, for example, unwarranted handling or splicing. Splices will need bedding in. Typical settlement extension of a back splice is 2-4%. Once ropes are bedded in, recoverable extension at working load is minimal, typically 0.6% or less. STEELSAFE MAX Designed specifically for the production of mooring facilities in deep waters, English Braids have utilised the latest fibres from DSM Dyneema® to upgrade the standard Steelsafe product. DM20 fibre delivers unrivalled rope strength, stiffness, durability and longevity. Dyneema® Max technology outperforms every other mooring rope on the market, surpassing industry standards for deepwater permanent moorings.

Laboratory tests demonstrate that ropes made from DM20 fibre retain the property characteristics of Dyneema®, even under long-term high tensions. Critical behavioural qualities, such as high static strength and stiffness, exceptional abrasion, fatigue and creep resistance enable a smaller, lighter rope to deliver improved performance and operational benefits. Dyneema® Max Technology performs significantly better than the SK 78 grade with reduced creep and is thus another step ahead compared to other HMPE.

XPS Max Ropes are supplied effectively in a worked state and will retain the low extension unless the rope construction is disturbed by, for example, unwarranted handling or splicing. Creep only

occurs over long periods and is accelerated by increased ambient temperature.

STEELSAFE XBO The introduction of Dyneema® SK75 XBO fibre is giving rope innovators powerful new ropes that outperform traditional materials such as wire rope in environments where high loads test the limits of bending performance. Dyneema® XBO ropes have the ability to work at greater proportions of their ultimate strength even in applications where extreme bending repetition has previously limited the service. Developed for the commercial world to combat issues associated with lifting via cranes and winches, and specifically to resolve issues associated with heat build-up in larger ropes. The unique property of XBO fibres to resist strength loss due to bend fatigue allows the rope to be specified where previously larger, heavier ropes would have been used. Importantly, in many applications this reduces the heat associated with internal fibre abrasion and therefore prolongs the life of the fibre. All of the English Braids standard treatments and processes are available with XBO fibre to ensure that the correct rope can be made for each application.

Ever increasing loads in reduced time frames and spaces have led to our development of ultra-light slings manufactured from Dyneema® fibres. A 12 strand rope formation is used to ensure that the product is torsionally stable so avoiding rotation in use. Wear protection is added to both eyes and the sling body if required, and can be made to specific colours for ease of use.

Raizer slings are available in standard Dyneema® SK75 or the enhanced tenacity SK90 version of the product to minimise diameter when necessary. The slings are available in single leg formation in line with the governing EN:1492-4+A1;2008 standard, and also in endless rope loop formation, called grommet slings, where shorter lengths are required between the bearing points. Slings are manufactured to the required lengths and are made to order.

EB Steelsafe ropes deliver exceptionally high levels of performance, abrasion resistance and longevity. However, when looking at applications where friction is either a bi-product or a requirement, it is necessary to cover the product. The EB Steelsafe Ultra product allows the strength to be delivered through the core while the polyester cover provides exceptionally high levels of abrasion protection. This is available in either flat braid or 24 plait standard constructions.

To allow for extreme wear scenarios the overbraid is also available in Dyneema®. This is not suited to high temperature application, although does offer a high level of longevity and abrasion resistance.

Although the standard product is available with a Dyneema® SK75 core, it is also available with both Dyneema® SK78, 90 , XBO and Max cores. In addition to the Dyneema® options, Steelsafe Ultra is also available in a 100% polyester construction, core and cover.
