Home Learning – Year 3 English Maths Monday – Describing a Scene This week’s English work is focused on the story Traction Man by Mini Grey. You can listen to the story on YouTube by following this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JySea288Qo Watch up to 2:12 of the video for today’s work. Discuss the first part of the story that you have just watched with someone at home or make some short notes about it if you are working independently. Think about how the characters might be feeling, why are they doing what they are doing and what do you think you might do if you were in the same situation as one of the characters? Now choose one of the picture pages from before 2:12 where Traction Man is on a mission and describe what is happening in as much detail as you can. You should be able to write at least 5 sentences to describe what is happening. Try to use as many adjectives and adverbs as you can to help someone who hasn’t read the book to understand what is happening. You could use where he is diving in the sink (1:12) or where he is crawling in the garden (1:45), or another page of your choice. Monday – Pictograms Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges! Tuesday – Instructions Watch up to 2:54 of the video for today’s work. Today you are going to be writing some instructions for how to get the scrubbing brush back from the ‘mysterious toes’. Your title will start with ‘How To….’. Think about which materials and equipment Traction Man needs to complete this rescue and write these as a list, then write step by step instructions to explain what he did to get his pet scrubbing brush back! You could draw a diagram underneath your instructions when you have finished. Tuesday – Calculations Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. English Maths Monday – Describing a Scene This week’s English work is focused on the story Traction Man by Mini Grey.

If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!

Wednesday – Unpicking Sentences

Watch the rest of the video so that you have now heard the whole story. On many

of the pages the writing is shown in the video, and I have included some of these

for you below. Choose one or two of these pages and read them out loud. What do

you notice? How do these sentences make you feel? Are there any words that you

think are very important on the page you have chosen? Write at least 4 sentences

about what you have noticed while reading these sentences.

Thursday – Editing Sentences Watch the video of Traction Man again. Choose at least 3 sentences that you are going to edit. Once they have been changed, the ‘flow’ of the sentence should be the same, but it should have a different meaning. You might want to choose some of the sentences that you read out loud yesterday, but you can choose any from the book. For example: Traction Man is crawling through the overgrown shrubbery near the pond, wearing Jungle Pants, Camouflage Vest, and Sweaty Bandana. This sentence could be changed to: Traction Man is skipping through the neatly trimmed shrubbery near the fountain, wearing suit trousers, a buttoned-up shirt, and a baseball cap. The changed sentence still has the same flow as the original, but the meaning has completely changed and it makes Traction Man sound much less adventurous and as though the situation he is in is not at all scary or dangerous! You could also draw a picture of what your new sentences are about.

Thursday – Money Problems Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!

Friday – Writing a New Adventure Re-watch the video of Traction Man. Take care to really understand the adventures he has been on in the story, and how he uses everyday objects and places around the home, but they might be phrased in a more exciting way. For example, the kitchen counters are called the ‘kitchen cliff’. Today you are going to be writing about a new adventure that Traction Man goes on. Try to write in the same style as the book if you can and remember to make your story as exciting as possible! Don’t forget that Traction Man loves to save things, so you might begin with thinking about what might need saving and where from? Remember to use capital letters, full stops, and speech marks!

Friday – Measures Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges! Hint: 100cm = 1 metre 1000m = 1km 1000g = 1kg 1000ml = 1 litre
