    Englishlanguage.Itwillimproveyourcommunication,listening,reading,writing,andcriticalthinkingskills.

    Thissemesterwewillfocus

    onthepoetsWilliamBlake

    andLordByron.WilliamBlakeandGeorgeGordon,LordByronrepresenttwo

    importantmomentsinEnglishpoetry.Blake,afirst-generation

    Romanticpoetbornin1757,drewinspirationfromtheAmericanand

    Frenchrevolutionsastheywereoccurring,suffereddisenchantment

    withtheFrenchRevolutionwhenitcollapsedintotyranny,andlived

    throughthefinaldefeatofNapoleonin1815.

    Blaketurnedthirty-onein1788,theyearthatByronwasborn.Forthe

    firsttwenty-sevenyearsofByronslifeEnglandwasatwarwith

    Francewithonlyshortinterruptions.TheAmericanRevolutionary

    WarwasafactofhistoryforByronastheVietnamWarisafactof

    historyfortodaysstudents:peoplewerealivewhosawithappen,but

    Byronwasntoneofthem.

    Bothpoets,livinginatumultuousage,exhibitcomplexattitudestowardsgovernment,religion,gender,andpoetry.Betweenthetwo,

    however,wewillbeabletostudyalmosteverysignificantgenreof

    poetrywritteninEnglish.

    Roman,12pt.fontdoublespacedfromtoptobottom

    withoutinterruptionorextralinespacesandwith1

    marginsallaround.Propersetupofassignedpapers

    countstowardthemechanicalhalfofpapergrades

    describedbelow.

    invaluablepracticeinreadingandfollowing

    complexwritteninstructionsandinpaying

    PoliciesTherearenoexcusedabsencesexceptforcompetitionsportstravel

    asperNCAAregulations.Absencesforfamilyillnesses,births,

    deaths,weddings,etc.,andthestudentsownillnesses arenot

    excusedabsences.Studentswhomissmorethanthreeclasses

    exceptforcompetitiontravelwillreceiveanautomaticgradeofF

    intheclass.

    Allstudentsarerequired

    tosubmitallwrittenworkbytheduedateand time,

    todemonstratecomprehensionofthematerial

    intheirwrittenwork,

    toargueathesisoriginaltothestudentinevery

    paper,unlesssummaryisexplicitlyassigned,

    tofollowMLAstyle. Nolateworkwillbeacceptedunderany

    Grading

    Therewillbe100pt.quizzesgiveninclassoneach

    weeksreading.Quizzescannotbemadeupunless

    willnotbeabletomakeupthequiz.Quizzeswill

    coverfactualinformationabouttheliterature

    Nosourcesfromthepubliclyaccessibleinternetwillbeacceptedasoneofthesefive

    sourceswithoutpriorwrittenoremailedconsentfromtheinstructor.

    Studentswhodonotcompleteafulltwentypagesofwritingthatincorporatesat

    leastfiveapprovedsourcesintothattwentypagesofwritingwillbeissueda

    gradeofFregardlessoftheirfinalaverageastheyhavenotmettheminimum

    requirementsofthecourse.

    Eachindividualpaperwillbegradedonthefollowingbasis:

    50%--grammar,spelling,MLAformatting. 50%--clarity,style,organization,content,andfulfillmentoftherequirementsoftheassignment.

    Pointswillbedeductedfromthefinalgradeofanypaperforbeingshortoflengthrequirementsinandpageincrementsasdeterminedbythe

    instructoraddingupto100pointsperpage.Studentsshouldnotpad

    theirpaperswithunnecessarywords,phrases,orideasiftheyarecoming

    upshort.Theyshouldaddmoredetail,moresupport,moreexamples,

    and/orfurtherexplanation.

    PapersusinginternetortextmessageabbreviationswillreceiveanautomaticgradeofF.

    Mycomputercrashedisnotanexcusefornotsubmittingapapertoturnitin.comby

    theduedate.Studentsareresponsibleforbackingupallworkeitherontoamemory

    stick,ontotheschoolnetworkdrive,orontoafilestoragesystemsuchasGoogledocs

    orDropbox(preferablyatleasttwooftheabove).Studentswhohavetheirwork

    backedupwillbeabletocontinuetheirworkonapubliccomputeroncampusshould

    Themidtermandfinalexamswillbeworth500ptseach.Thefinalexamwillcover

    onlymaterialstudiedsincethemidtermexam.Eachexamwillconsistof50-100

    multiplechoicequestionsaskingfactualquestionsaboutthefollowingtopics:

    Associatingauthorswiththeirworks. Birthanddeathdatesofauthorsandcompositiondatesofworks. Genreandotherliteraryfeaturesofworks. Relevantbiographicalandhistoricaldetailsassociatedwiththeworks. Quotationorspeakeridentification:pleasenotethatbeingabletoidentifyaquotationorthespeakerassociatedwithquotedtextdoesnotmeanthat

    studentsareexpectedtomemorizeassignedreading,onlythattheyhave

    readit,comprehendedit,andunderstooditsmajorthemesandmajor

    characterswellenoughto identifythemwithinamultiplechoicequestion.

    Questionsonthemidtermandfinalwillbedrawnfromclassdiscussionandfromassignedreading.
