I. Introduction.

The primary goal of this program is that you will acquire language skills

through a clear working plan which contains precise instructions with

plenty of opportunity for self-evaluation. Your role to distance learning

program is to participate actively and creatively in learning, using both the

materials you study in the course and your own knowledge and language

resources. In the last decades the student text was the focal point of the

instruction process. Today, the text plays an important role, but is

complemented by many exercises for the student's use. The CD's, the

workbook, and especially the Learning Guide, provide practice for each unit so

the students have the opportunity to use English for everyday situations and

purposes related tosocial life, work and leisure. In addition the learners will

be able to personalize the language, make use of their own knowledge,

experiences and express their ownideas and opinions.This is a flexible program easily adaptable for your own needs and available

time. We want to provide the support that you need through our exercises,

keyideas and learning suggestions.

II. Course materials.

a) The Student's Book.

Following an approach and methodology used in the face2face extends theuse of a wide variety of stimulating and challenging activities. These

activities cover skills of listening, speaking reading and writing.

The Student's Book contains twelve units with a Review Unit at the end of

each unit in the back of the textbook; including a set of communication

activities.

.

b) The Workbook.

The Workbook contains varied exercises that provide additional practice to

develop your skills. Each unit of the Workbook parallels the corresponding unit

of the Student's Book in context. Do the Workbook exercises as a review.

c) CD-ROM.

The CD's are available for you to use for self-study. Exercises that are

recorded on the CD's are indicated in the text with a green box and the number

to the lesson that is referred to. The CD'S contain recordings of conversations,

grammar, summaries, pronunciation exercises, and listening activities.

d) The Learning Guide.

It's a very important material designed to help you. It mainly contains the

structure of the English Language as a system that puts words together into

meaningful units. You will find here the practical application of the grammar.

The goals for each unit are clearly stated.

III. Organization of the Study Guide.

a. Goals.

A clear approach of a complete English program allows students be creative in

using their new language while developing their grammatical sense.

This guide to the student text is designed to provide the support that the students

need through key ideas, exercises and learning suggestions.

b. Level length and evaluation.

Each level covers twelve units divided in 4 parts (months). After covering sixunits of self instruction, students are expected to fulfill a Study guide questionnaire

On line in their Virtual Class. The exercises of the test correspond to the sixth

receding units.

There are two Study guide questionnaires. Each one covers six units of the

Student's Book. They are divided into sections, making it easy to identify students'

strengths and weaknesses.

c. Level schedule.

It has been designed so that students can complete the text in about 4 months.

The amount of time which students will spend on individual units will be affected by

factors such as the difficulty of material or the extent to which Practice Exercises

and Self Evaluation Exercises are added. The following course schedule is

meant to be a general guide which should be adjusted to the abilities of the

students and the program requirements.

d. Tutorage.

There is a tutor for each Level, who can help you with any problems. At

her/his office you can find information about schedules, professors, course

materials, learning problems, tests, and study guides.

e. Learning suggestions.

Suggestions for learning each lesson include practical techniques to help

students complete the tasks of the lesson's objectives in a lively way. You may

choose to follow the suggestions or use them as departure points for making

your plans.

1. How to learn Quick Review.

This activity is presented in a graphic form and contains information about the

world that introduces the topic of the unit.

a) It is recommended that you make a full use of the illustration and

information in it. The Information will give you a new situation in which to

use the new language patterns you are going to practice.

d) You can then move ahead confidently and efficiently in exercises which

follow this introductory material.

2. How to learn Vocabulary.

These exercises introduce vocabulary that you will use in the unit.

a) Look at the pictures.

c) Complete the tasks, using a dictionary if needed.

e) Then check your answers.

3. How to practice Conversation.

These activities introduce the new grammar points and functions, they present

the grammar in a situational context.

We suggest the following procedure:

Part A:

a) Look at the picture and try to understand the situation.

b) Cover the conversation and listen to the conversation in the CD.

c) Uncover the conversation and read it line by line.

d) Be sure you understand the new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

e) Listen to the conversation again and try to repeat after the speakers.

Part B:

f) Go over the questions.

h) Play the part B of the audio program.

i) Answer the questions.

j) Check your answers. See Audio script at the end of the textbook

4. How to learn Grammar.

These activities present summaries of the new grammar items and some

grammar exercises.

a) Listen to the audio program as you look at the light green boxes

b) See your Workbook if more clarification or grammar

explanation is needed; there are additional grammar exercises in the

Workbook that can be used for a good understanding of the grammar point.

c) Complete the tasks.

5. How topractice Pronunciation.

These exercises are designed to practice pronunciation features usually found

in the Conversations or Grammar Focus exercises.

a) Read the instructions carefully.

b) Play the CD once or twice while you read the words or phrases.

c) Look at the arrows which show the intonation (->), the stress mark ( ')

and the stressed syllables in boldface (children)

d) Play the audio program again, this time pausing it so you can repeat

after the speakers.

6. How to practice Listening.

These exercises provide follow up written practice related to the topic of the unit:

a) Look at the picture and the instructions

b) Try to understand the situation

c) Play the program once or twice.

d) Complete the tasks

e) Play the audio program again and check your answers.

f) Refer to the Audio Video Links provided.

7. How to practice Writing.

These exercises will help develop your compositional skills. They are often

task-based.

a) Follow the task's instructions carefully.

b) Read the writing sample (if any).

c) Gather the necessary information and make a chart with your notes.

d) Write a draft for your composition.

e) Write the paragraphs.

f) Revise your composition. Clarify ideas. Correct grammar, spelling

and punctuation.

8. Reading.

These exercises develop reading skills. The questions about the topic of

the reading help to understand the reading.

a) Read the title and the pre-reading question(s).

b) Look at the pictures to get an idea of the situation.

c) Read the article. Mark any new word or phrase whose meaning

you have trouble guessing from the context.

d) Find the definitions of any new words you marked. New Key

Vocabulary can be found in the Text Book. See the corresponding

Unit.

e) Complete the tasks.

9. Extra practice activities.

These activities are found at the back of the book. There is one

Activity for each Unit in the book.

a) When possible, take turns sharing this activity with friends.

b) Go over the instructions.

c) Do the tasks.

After you have completed the Study Guide exercises for each unit,

complete the Student's Book exercises with the same teaching point. At the

end of a unit, do the entire corresponding unit's Workbook exercises as a

review.

10. How to practice Writing.

These exercises will help develop your compositional skills. They are often

After you have completed the Study Guide exercises for each unit, complete the

Student's Book exercises with the same teaching point. At the end of a unit, do all

the corresponding unit's Workbook exercises as a review.

f. Didactic Units.

1. Organization of a D dactic Unit.

Informative Data: Required information to be written in capital letters using

the proper blank space.

Title of the Unit and topics. E.g.: Unit One. Title: Work, rest and play.

Topics: Life stories, super commuters, time to relax, speed dating.

Goals: Communication: Activities which focus on speaking skills.Functions: Each lesson is based on a series of situations related by

structure and content.

Grammar: These notes state some general principles of grammar

for the new structures in the unit. The notes correspond

point by point to the grammatical goal of the unit .

Vocabulary: Specific vocabulary to be used in the unit.

2. Parts of the Unit.

Key Ideas.

These grammatical points are introduced in functional contexts and through

grammar summaries that illustrate the meaning and use of them.

Test yourself exercises. These exercises are designed to help students to

check their own progress. If students score lower than seventy percent of

accuracy, they should check Practice Exercises or review the exercises in their

workbooks.

New Vocabulary. It is an important element in learning a second or foreign

language. It is presented at the end of learning English guide.

g. Monthly Evaluation.

These are on line exercises to check students progress at the end of every

unit. Each exercise is divided into sections which test one skill at a time.

These exercises have to be answered in the on line platform each month and

will give your monthly score that is necessary for the study guide score.

h. The Exams.

There are two exams to asses Student's learning. There is one test to be

used after every six units. (See the academic schedule), A satisfactory rate of

learning should lead to 70 percent and above accuracy (14/20).

During this Semester: Sept. 2013- February 2014, the Study Guide for the EnglishProficiency will be held ON LINE, taking advantage of the new technology.

The Nature of the Distance Mode is based on self studying which means every students

have to study on their own. Of course, there are tutoring sessions to explain any difficulttopics for you. Students are supposed to finish studying until Unit 6 from your Textbookbefore they access the On line Guide to complete the evaluation.
