YOUR HOME

Determine availability at your home

To confirm that natural gas service is available at your home

go to WashingtonGas com. Depending on your location, more

research may be needed. If further research is required, an

email regarding availability will be sent in about three days

Have your contractor provide us with information

Your contractor will send along the number/type/BTU rating of

the gas appliances you are installing, distance from street to

desired meter location and gas pressure requirements. Along

with the appliance and pressure information, we will need a

scalable copy of your site plan or property plat with the meter

location clearly marked. To find a participating conversion

contractor or to download the required forms,

visit WashingtonGas com

Determine the total cost

Once the forms are submitted, Washington Gas will send you a

commitment letter outlining your cost, if any. (Please allow three

weeks or more for processing.) This cost, if required, would be

in addition to whatever your conversion contractor has quoted

for the natural gas equipment and installation, and contributes

to installing the gas service line, meter and regulator. If you are

using a Washington Gas Participating Conversion Contractor, all

costs for the natural gas appliances and appliance installation

can be financed (with approved credit) through financing options

provided by the contractor.

54

Steps to Convert Your Home to Natural Gas

Page 5: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

76

Return the commitment letter

Washington Gas will not take any further action until you sign

and return the commitment letter and pay any installation

contribution (if required). If you do not return the commitment

letter, the price estimate is valid for six months from the date on

the commitment letter

Schedule all installations You will need to contact the underground contractor to schedule an installation date. As required by law, Washington Gas will have the utility locating service mark any public underground utilities. All private underground utilities—such as sprinkler systems, buried oil tanks, landscape lighting systems—must be located and marked by you. Once the underground line is installed, your gas meter will be installed (no scheduling is required). Then, contact your conversion contractor to install and arrange for inspection of all the interior gas piping and equipment.

Seven steps to add or replace natural gas appliances if you are already a Washington Gas customer

Newer natural gas appliances may have higher gas volume demands

and pressure requirements. To ensure proper installation:

1. Contractor verifies the total BTU input rating for existing appliance(s)

as well as the appliances being added and/or replaced.

2. Contractor verifies the gas pressure requirements that the

manufacturer suggests for the appliance(s) being added.

3. Contractor submits the Added Load/Split Meter Request Form to

Washington Gas

4. Washington Gas will determine if both the existing service line and

gas pressure to the home are adequate.

5. If it is determined that your existing service does not have the capacity

to handle the additional load, a service replacement will be required.

6. If a service replacement is not needed, the meter company will contact

the customer and/or contractor to schedule the installation and confirm

whether a contribution for the upgraded meter/split is required.

7. If a service replacement is required, the job will be designed as

a new service and you will receive a commitment letter with a

contribution quote, if any.

Split Meter

When adding a gas appliance, contractors may request

Washington Gas to install a split meter. In this application,

Washington Gas would install a new meter (or reinstall the

old meter) and two regulators to provide 2PSIG pressure to

the new appliances and 7.0 inches water column pressure to

the existing appliances where higher pressure is available.

When & Why Contractors Would Use a Split Meter

1. It can be less expensive and easier to run new gas piping

from the meter than tapping into the existing house piping

system

2. The existing low pressure house piping system is

inadequately sized for handling the additional load of a

new gas appliance.

3. The new gas appliance may require a higher gas pressure

that can be delivered by the existing system, thus making

the split meter the only feasible system to install.

Types of natural gas heating systems:

Forced-Air: This most common system uses

natural gas burners to heat air that is “forced”

through ductwork by a blower or fan

Hydronic: Steam or hot water, created by a

gas boiler, circulates through radiators, radiant

tubing built into the floor or baseboard units

Ductless: Whether it’s supplemental heat for

one room or even heating the whole house,

direct-vent furnaces require no chimneys or

ductwork

Combo: Combine heating, water heating and

sometimes even cooling in a single system

Today’s high-efficiency natural gas heating

systems—now up to 96% efficient—keep you

warm and comfortable on the chilliest days Since

space heating accounts for nearly half of your

annual gas usage and heating systems often

operate 15 hours a day during winter months,

increasing efficiency is the single most effective

way to reduce your gas bill

How much can you save? Compared to older

models with efficiency ratings of 60 to 65%, new

systems can save up to 40% on utility bills.

You’ll feel more comfortable than ever, too. A heat

pump just can’t match the warmth and comfort of

a natural gas heating system. Nor the reliability—

gas furnaces, on average, last twice as long as

heat pumps.

Making the right choiceFurnace size: To find the right furnace capacity for your home, have

your licensed HVAC contractor perform a load calculation.

Efficiency: High-efficiency furnaces may cost more to buy, but they

should cost less to operate monthly. Ask your contractor to provide

a pay-off period for the model you’re thinking of buying—that is, the

time it will take your energy cost savings to surpass the higher price.

Compare products and contractors: Prices may vary considerably.

Get written installation estimates and references from licensed

HVAC contractors

Installation: Make sure it’s been properly installed—ask your

contractor for all the test results specified in the manufacturer’s

installation instructions

Natural Gas Forced-Air Heating SystemsIn a forced-air system, the furnace draws cool air into a

metal box called a heat exchanger. There, it’s warmed by a

gas burner and forced through a filter and into ducts by an

electric fan or blower The air vented into rooms is about

120° Fahrenheit, as much as 30° warmer than air circulated

by an electric heat pump.1 Systems can feature electronic

air filters, electric cooling equipment, a humidifier, pilot-

less ignition, zone heating and venting directly through

basement walls

With forced-air systems, you not only enjoy a steady flow

of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less

energy And a gas furnace lasts two times longer than an

electric heat pump.

Making the right choice Boiler size: To find the right boiler capacity for your home, have

your licensed HVAC contractor perform a load calculation.

System type: Conventional hydronic systems warm a room

through baseboard units located along the outside wall or under

windows to counteract chilly downdrafts. Baseboard tubing

continues to disperse warmth even after the hot water has

stopped flowing. For different temperatures in different living

spaces, choose zoned heating.

Service after installation: To ensure the boiler will provide

comfortable heat on demand for many years, select a licensed

contractor for after-sale support. Ask for written estimates and

references before you sign a contract

Natural Gas Hydronic Heating SystemsHydronic systems circulate hot water or steam

throughout homes Older systems use steam and

radiators to give off a radiant heat while newer systems

send hot water through baseboard units or piping in

the floor to produce both radiant and convection heat.

They come in a wide range of sizes and efficiencies

and need venting: atmospheric venting for lower-

efficiency models; induced draft or sealed combustion

for higher-efficiency units

Higher-efficiency boiler units with secondary heat

exchangers, known as condensing systems, also

require special piping and a drain.

Making the right choice Use a Licensed Contractor: Proper installation is critical.

Quotes and references: Get written installation quotes,

along with references, from several licensed contractors

for the different products.

Sizing: Your licensed contractor can determine the

appropriate heater capacity based on the size of your

room, insulation value of your windows, walls and roof.

Other Natural Gas Heating Systems

Ductless

Ductless heaters allow you to enjoy gas heat without adding

ductwork or a chimney. Easy-to-install, efficient direct-vent

models can be installed on any outside wall and can heat the

whole house. Vent-free models offer supplemental heat in a

single room or emergency heat during a power failure.

Combo

Heat your home and water with a natural gas water heater—

storage or tankless. Simple and inexpensive to install—there

are no vertical flues and only one gas line is needed Direct

venting is required, but the air handler can be installed where

convenient. The home is heated when hot water is pumped

through the coil in an air handler

Natural gas fireplaces simulate the look of real wood—with none

of the hassles The “logs” are available in a variety of wood styles

A burner module creates the flames, which dance and flicker with

golden hues Some units even recreate the look of glowing embers

beneath the logs. Safety is built in: the main burner on most units

will not light if combustion cannot take place safely. Vent-free units

contain an oxygen depletion sensor to turn off the unit if the oxygen

level falls

Use as a Source of Heat

Some natural gas fireplace products can be used for substantial

zone heating. Look for the product descriptions “vented natural gas

fireplace heater” or “vent-free room heater.” Products certified as a

“vented natural gas fireplace” are not designed to heat, but offer the

ambiance of a beautiful fire

More Realistic Than Ever

Today, they don’t just look more like wood fireplaces, they can sound

and smell like them, too, with smoky incenses and crackling sounds

available. They can even improve on reality, with catalytic filters that

cleanse the air

heatnglo com(see our ad on page 45)

Natural Gas Fireplace Products

Vented Log Sets

Vented log sets offer the lowest initial cost and simplest

installation—right into existing wood-burning fireplaces.

Vented through the flue, much of the heat is lost up

the chimney (as in wood fires), making them primarily a

decorative product. Also available in vent-free models

(See page 32).

Fireplace Inserts

Inserts are self-contained units that, when installed in an

existing fireplace, are efficient sources of supplemental

heat. They vent through the existing chimney as

long as an approved flue liner is installed. Controlled

combustion and ventilation improve heating capability.

Also available in vent-free models (See page 32).

28

Page 17: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

Factory-Built Fireplaces

Factory-built natural gas fireplaces can be added

to most rooms—neither an existing fireplace nor a

chimney (in the case of direct-vent models) is needed.

They are complete units available in a variety of

configurations including see-through, corner models,

and peninsula units with three open sides. Great for

remodeling or new home construction, they are also

available in vent-free models (See page 32).

Freestanding Stoves

Freestanding natural gas stoves are self-contained

units that resemble old-fashioned wood burning stoves

They can take the place of an existing wood stove if

a special flue liner or natural gas vent is inserted into

the chimney Natural gas stoves are available in both

contemporary and traditional styles, in an array of

colors, and most have a fire-viewing area. Natural gas

stoves can contribute significant heat to the room or

the entire house and are also available in vent-free

models (See page 32).

Fireplace Venting TechniquesHearth products are vented in three ways: natural draft,

direct-vent and vent-free

Natural draft products vent out through the roof by using a

relined masonry or metal chimney or newly installed “B-vent.”

Existing masonry chimneys must be relined to ensure proper

draft and prevent harmful condensation.

Direct-vent products can be vented vertically or horizontally

so a conventional chimney is not needed, providing greater

location flexibility. Direct-vent uses two pipes (often one

inside the other) to both draw the air needed for combustion

and vents the gases outdoors. Remember, these units cannot

be located too far from building exteriors. Some units will

circulate room air around the fireplace to provide additional

convective heating

Page 18: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

Vent-free products draw air from the inside of the home and burn

so efficiently that there is no need for venting. They are the optimal

choice as an additional heat source Vent-free units should not be

installed in bedrooms, bathrooms or other confined spaces, and are

for occasional, attended and supplemental use only. Because vent-

free natural gas hearth products are certified as vent-free space

heaters, they are required to have an oxygen depletion sensor

(ODS). Some models are available with a built-in catalyst to further

reduce the emission of combustion products. Washington Gas

recommends that consumers strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s

operating instructions.

Next, see the products in person by visiting any of the fireplace

dealers on pages 36-37, or those found in the Contractor Search at

WashingtonGas com Washington Gas recommends you consider

products that are design-certified by a nationally-recognized

laboratory that tests to American National Standards Institute

(ANSI) standards.

Choosing a Dealer/InstallerGet a free estimate and compare the total cost of the models you

are considering. Total cost includes the fireplace product price,

including any accessories, installation cost and operating and

maintenance costs

We recommend choosing your dealer on more than lowest price

alone Ask if they install and service their products. If not, ask if

they arrange for a professional to handle installation. Then, choose

the dealer you can trust to provide the greatest overall value.

Use a licensed installer who will provide you with a copy of all

necessary permits to show your fireplace is in compliance with

local codes and regulations Your installer should arrange for

inspection by the county or city that issued the installation permit

for the work (See page 83). After installation is complete, request

a review of how to operate the product and all recommended

service requirements.

38

Important Safety Requirements for Natural Gas Fireplaces 1 Installation of a vented gas log set must be in a wood-burning vented

fireplace that has a working flue constructed of noncombustible materials

and meets proper clearances to combustible materials.

2. If combustion air is drawn from the home (conventional venting or vent-free

products), at least 50 cubic feet of room volume is required for every 1000

BTUs of burner input. This applies to the sum of all equipment burners

drawing combustion air from the space.

3. When a vented natural gas log set is installed, a special damper clip must

be affixed to the chimney damper to prevent the damper from closing

completely (except for vent-free products).

4. A fireplace screen or glass door should be installed with all vented natural

gas logs and fireplaces.

5. When using an existing chimney for venting, a flue liner may be needed. In

addition, you should plan to have your chimney cleaned before installation.

6. In Washingtong Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) jurisdictions

(Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties), a carbon monoxide (CO)

alarm is required in homes where a vent-free fireplace product is installed.

Aside from WSSC, this is recommended from a safety stand point.

7. Installation of natural gas logs in a prefabricated fire box that is not UL

Water heating is the second largest use of energy in the home It’s

nice to know that high-efficiency natural gas water heaters heat

more water per hour—and do so up to twice as fast—as electric

water heaters. Choose from two types of natural gas water

heaters—storage, the most common type, or the newer, even more

efficient, tankless water heaters.

Storage Water Heaters

Storage water heaters range in size from 20 to 80 gallons, and

usually consist of a steel tank lined with glass or another anti-

corrosive material. Since hot water is lighter than cold water, hot

water leaves from the top of your water heater whenever someone

turns on a hot water tap. To replenish the tank, unheated water

enters from the bottom and is heated by a thermostat-controlled gas

burner. The burner will also turn on if the temperature in the tank

falls below a certain level, so that hot water will always be available

when a tap is turned. A relief valve protects against temperature

or pressure that is too high for the tank. Because installation is

relatively simple, they’re a good choice for homes converting to a

natural gas water heating system They offer the homeowner many

installation and location choices

Tankless Water Heaters

Making the right choice STORAGE WATER HEATERS

Capacity: While many consumers choose models based on

tank size, the first-hour rating (FHR) is actually more important.

FHR, required by law to appear on the Energy Guide label, is

the measure of how much hot water the heater will deliver in

an hour. So you don’t buy a water heater larger than you need,

estimate your household’s hot water needs and shop for a

water heater with an FHR in that range

Efficiency: The energy efficiency of a storage water heater is

indicated by its “Energy Factor” (EF). The higher the EF, the

more efficient the water heater

Cost: While it may be tempting to buy an inexpensive water

heater, the least expensive water heaters are often the most

expensive to operate. A high-efficiency water heater may cost

a little more, but reduced operating costs will more than make

up for the higher outlay. Use the Energy Guide label to help you

choose an energy-efficient heater

4746

Page 26: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

Tankless Water Heaters

With a tankless water heater, the burner heats water only when

there is a demand for hot water Since there is no constant heating

and re-heating of stored hot water, no energy is wasted; the amount

of energy used is always proportional to the volume of hot water

being used. When the hot water tap is turned off, the system

shuts down. This translates directly to operational dollar savings

and reduced impact on our environment. Yet, hot water arrives as

quickly as with a storage heater, and never runs out (when sized

appropriately for your home). Tankless water heaters are designed

to last for 20 years, and because they are smaller than tank units,

they are perfect for homes where space is limited.

Condensing Storage Water Heaters

Gas condensing water heaters work much like other gas water

heaters. However, in lieu of venting the combustion gases, these

gases are used to reheat the water, making these waters heaters

more efficient

Manufacturer

rinnai us(see our ad on page 55)48 49

Making the right choice TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

A different set of considerations are involved in choosing a tankless

heater. A qualified contractor can help you decide both whether a

tankless water heater is suitable, and which one would be best for you.

Flow rate and simultaneous water usage needs: While tankless water

heaters can provide an endless supply of hot water, they can be limited

as to how much hot water can be produced at any given time. To find

the unit best for you, you’ll need to determine how much hot water

flow is required. It is important to have the unit sized properly. Some

applications may require multiple units to work properly.

Gas line sizing: Have your qualified contractor ensure your gas line is

sized properly; tankless water heaters draw many more BTUs than a

storage water heater and may require higher gas pressures.

Combustion air requirements: These apply only to indoor

installations where air is drawn from the room where the water heater

is installed. Some manufacturers offer only direct-vent units, which do

not require internal combustion air.

Page 27: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

Venting your gas water heater To remove combustion by-products, natural gas water heaters must be vented to the outdoors in one of the ways below

Atmospheric venting is the most common, and simply lets the gaseous by-products, which are warmer than the surrounding air, rise naturally through a vertical metal vent pipe or masonry chimney. Fans or other mechanical boosters are not needed, keeping installation and operating costs down.

Direct-vent or horizontally-vented water heaters can be used when vertical chimneys or flues are not available or would be more expensive to install. The vents go directly through an outside wall, and also can bring combustion air to the burner. Most of these units require zero clearance at the sides and rear, so they can be installed in a small area

Fan-assisted or power-vented gas water heaters use an electric fan or blower to push out combustion gases. This type of venting allows gas water heaters to be installed as far as 40 feet away from an outside wall and in homes without existing vertical vents. The flue or vent pipe can be hidden behind walls and cabinets Other gas equipment installed with the water heater can use the same power venting system.

Note: In general, the water heater should be installed so the vent length is as short and straight as possible. Some models can be vented up to 41 feet, vertically or horizontally, while other models can be vented as far as 100 feet or more

NATURAL GAS PRODUCTS EXTEND THE ENTERTAINING SEASON

MAKE THE GREAT OUTDOORS EVEN GREATER

Create a terrific getaway right in your own backyard with these natural gas outdoor products. Natural Gas Grills Get all the advantages of outdoor cooking without the mess, expense or long preparation time of charcoal. And unlike propane tanks, which always seem to run out of fuel just as hungry guests arrive, a direct connect to your home’s gas line means an uninterrupted fuel supply.

Start grilling in an instant, with precise cooking control. Natural gas grills heat up fast, and their precise temperature control gives you more flexibility than charcoal or propane. Cook at a constant temperature without having to tend the fire or check propane levels.

Special features such as flavorizer bars, side burners, rotisseries, multi-level cooking, flip-up side tables and food warmers let you create exactly what you’re looking for in a grill. Locate it permanently on your deck or patio or choose a “quick-connect” hookup that makes it easy to move the grill when not in use

With proper maintenance, safe, clean-burning natural gas grills will last for years, saving you the expense of charcoal and lighter fluid or propane. And cooking on a grill keeps your kitchen cooler, reducing the demand on your air conditioning when it’s warm outside

57

Page 31: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

58

Making the right choice Grill Size: Make sure your grill fits safely and conveniently in

your outdoor area, especially if you are considering permanent

installation to your existing home gas line.

Ignition: Push button igniters produce a spark with each push;

knob igniters emit two or three sparks per turn.

Burners: Separate burners allow you to control heat better

than just one burner; most grills have at least two Check that

your burners are proportional to the grill cooking area for more

efficient and even cooking

Heat Distribution: To better distribute heat, use lava rocks,

ceramic briquettes, metal plates and metal bars. Consider a grill

that funnels grease away from the burners to be vaporized for

enhanced charbroiled flavor while reducing drip flare-ups.

Installation and Mounting Types: “Quick-connect” hookups

let you move the grill when you’re not cooking. Post or built-

in type grills connect directly to your home’s gas line and are

permanently located. For those, look for a grill that will stand up to

the elements

Assembly: If assembly is required, ask if your dealer offers

assembly services

Patio Heaters

Get gentle, sun-like warmth with natural gas patio heaters. Infrared

burners, emitter screens and reflector domes direct uniform, radiant heat

downward to warm people and objects, not the air in-between. While they

can operate effectively in exposed areas, patio heaters are more efficient

in wind- and weather-protected areas.

Making the right choice Size: The warmth from a patio heater can cover a 12- to 25-foot area.

Choose a model that’s best suited to how you’ll be entertaining

Location: Near cooking and eating areas or by a pool or spa—

where gas piping often already exists—are popular choices.

Burners and Ignition: Models with adjustable burners and piezo

ignitions light with the turn of a knob and allow you more control

over heating output. Individual remote control switches provide

instant starting

Safety: Some models have shut-off systems that automatically turn

the unit off in winds of 10 mph or more.

Installation and Mounting Types: Options include permanent post,

portable post (with a flexible gas line and quick connection) and

suspended mountings, great for limited space because they can be

permanently mounted out of the way. 59

Page 32: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

61

Outdoor Lights

Get dependable security and the safety of non-shadowed

illumination from natural gas lights—all without electricity.

They cast light equivalent to a 60-watt bulb, and don’t attract

insects. With fuel-saving features built in, optional dimmers

or electronic ignitions make them even more cost efficient

Weatherproof and sturdy, they require little maintenance.

Making the right choice Mounting Types: Mount on a wall, on your deck, or on a post on your patio.

Consider installing on the same gas line serving a pool/spa heater or gas grill.

Location: Consider lighting walkways, entryways and outdoor entertainment

areas, especially those with other natural gas products.

Style: From carriage lamps to tiki torches, outdoor gas lights come in many styles.

Burners: Mantles (a covering of refractory material) provide incandescent light

when placed over a flame. Standard gas lights with dual-inverted burner and

mantles provide maximum light. Other burner options include triple and quad

burners, or an open flame burner for a more natural appearance.

Ignition: For convenience, look for a gas light that has an electronic ignition

and can be turned on and off with a typical light switch. Models with automatic

reignite will relight if the flame is blown out

60

Pool and Spa Heaters

Get precise temperature controls from even the most basic models. Extremely

durable, they heat water quickly and economically. Automatic thermostats and timers

let you maintain a constant temperature or heat only as needed. Quick-connect

plumbing connections allow simple hookups to existing water and gas lines, while

automatic shut-off controls provide added safety. Self-diagnostic programs that give

service technicians detailed information are an example of available options.

Making the right choiceHeater Size: Don’t choose a smaller heater solely on initial costs. Because

it doesn’t have to work as long to heat the same size pool or spa, a larger

heater may be more economical than a small heater Tell your dealer the

pool size and the water temperature desired during the coolest month you

plan to use it. For a spa heater, gallons and preferred heat-up time are the

deciding factors

Ignition and Burners: A standard electronic ignition system activates the

pilot light only when necessary. A millivolt ignition offers matchless ignition.

Stainless steel burners offer greater reliability and longer life

Maintenance: Consider models with easy serviceability to the igniter and

encapsulated controls that can extend heater life by maintaining a dryer,

cooler environment Annual maintenance is recommended

Conservation: Use a pool or spa cover to reduce heat loss and shield your

pool from the wind, as wind lowers temperatures significantly.

Outdoor Fire Pits and Campfires

Enjoy your deck or patio on chilly spring afternoons thanks to the warmth of a

natural gas fireplace. Select from a firepit, chiminea or built-in outdoor fireplace

to keep you warm.

No fuss. No mess. No smoke. Easy to start with the simple turn of a knob—

thanks to a permanent connection to your home’s gas line—there’s no chopping

and hauling firewood. When you’re done, just turn it off and there’s no clean up.

Protective covers guard against the elements and make campfires even easier

to maintain. Place one anywhere you can connect to a natural gas source, even

on a wood deck. The controlled flame is safe and won’t kick out sparks; and

there’s no wood-burning air pollution or forest depletion.

Create your own look There are a variety of stainless steel burner systems

available in several sizes, BTU outputs and different ceramic fiber logs.

Your campfire can also be customized using rock, brick, stone or fabricated

surrounds. You can even have a built-in outdoor fireplace.

Making the right choiceLocation: Consider the type of surface your outdoor fireplace or campfire will

sit on and how much room is around it

Styles and Construction: Outdoor fireplace styles are endless. Choose from

full-size, built-in fireplaces, the charm of chimineas, the rustic feel of firepits.

Log Types and Options: Logs are crafted to simulate the look of real wood and

are available in a variety of wood types. Many are split and charred for added

realism. Additional outdoor fireplace and campfire options include remote

control, wall mounted on/off switches, safety screens and grilling capabilities.

Surrounds: Build your own campfire surround or choose from prefabricated

surrounds, such as small cast iron bases, for use in smaller backyards.

Burners: High-input burners made of ceramic or stainless steel provide instant

heat to the surrounding area Models with variable flame control allow you to

adjust your fire and turn it on and off in an instant

Ignition: Electronic ignitions enable an easy, instant start with the push of a

button or turn of a knob Smaller models may have a manual ignition Some

models have safety shut-off valves and automatic reignite that will relight if the

wind should blow the flame out

Maintenance: If you have a built-in fireplace or campfire permanently installed

to your gas line, consider using a fireplace cover to protect it from the elements.

See all your choices in person

Get an in-person look at all the different outdoor products discussed

above at the participating dealers listed on page 65. While there,

ask about warranties and ease of replacement part purchase and

installation. Look for design-certification from a nationally-recognized

laboratory that tests to American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

standards. Compare the total cost of any models you are considering

by including the price of desired accessories, installation, operation

and maintenance. Choose a reliable dealer you trust to provide the

greatest overall value — not just the lowest price.

Inquire about available financing options the dealer may offer. Ask if

they assemble, install and service the products they sell. If not, ask

if they will arrange or recommend a professional for installation or

service Get a written estimate and check references before signing

a contract

Make sure your outdoor product is in compliance with local codes and

regulations by getting a copy of all necessary permits. Any licensed

installer will gladly provide you with a copy. Your installer should also

arrange for inspection by the county or city that issued the installation

permit for the work. See page 83 for more information.

Serious chefs prefer natural gas. It’s energy efficient, turns on and off instantly,

and offers even heat and precise temperature control.

Natural gas cooking products come in all sizes and configurations, from the

familiar freestanding range with a cooktop and oven to built-in cooktops

and ovens, separated based on the layout of your kitchen. Drop them into

countertops or islands or between cabinets. Add an indoor gas grill as part of

the range or as a freestanding unit, too.

While true commercial ranges are not recommended for home use because

of their high heat output, many professional-style ranges are now available for

home installation. With extra insulation and other home safety measures, they

feature multiple burners and ovens.

To save energy, most new natural gas cooking products use electronic or

spark ignition rather than a continuously burning pilot light. Although an

exhaust system may not be required by code, exhaust fans eliminate the

normal by-products of cooking such as steam, smoke, grease and heat—and

indoor gas grills always require an exhaust system. You can use a traditional

overhead exhaust fan that runs through a wall or ceiling; some products

can even use a “downdraft” system. Downdraft exhausting is often used on

islands, avoiding a traditional oven exhaust hood in the center of the kitchen.

Making the right choiceSize: Most free-standing ranges are 30 inches wide, but

20-, 24-, 36- and 40-inch wide models are available. Drop-in

or slide-in ranges are usually 30 inches wide but may be

available in other widths. Cooktops come in 30-inch and

36-inch widths. Professional ranges are available in widths

from 24 to 60 inches, with varying heights. Special options

include sealed or removable burners, cleaning features,

convection ovens and heavy-duty burner grates

Cleaning and controls: Cleaning methods include

standard, continuous- and self-cleaning. Try out the

controls—are they easily understood and easy to reach

and use?

Exhaust system: Keep exhaust placement in mind as

you shop and consult with an appliance professional to

determine compatibility of the ventilation and the cooking

surface

Warranties and certification: Compare warranty and service

arrangements and consider design-certified models tested

to national standards by a nationally-recognized laboratory.

70

Making the right choiceLimited space: Compact natural gas dryers require only about

five square feet of space. Often a stackable washer/dryer unit

may provide the best fit for small laundry rooms.

Venting: Dryers can be vented from the side, back or bottom.

Capacity: Regular/large drum size dryers usually have a drum

volume of 5 5 to 7 cubic feet to easily handle average family

loads. In addition to large loads, extra-large drum sizes (volumes

up to 8 cubic feet) are designed to handle very bulky items such

as comforters

Certification: Models must be design-certified and tested to

national standards by International Approval Services or another

nationally-recognized laboratory.

Unlike electric, natural gas dryers provide full heat instantly for faster

drying, so the more laundry you do, the more you’ll want to choose

natural gas Today’s natural gas dryers use electronic ignition systems

(instead of a continuously burning pilot light) for additional savings and

energy conservation. And when natural gas dryers shut off, the heat

stops immediately.

Natural gas clothes dryers range in size from 24 inches to 29 inches

and generally come in three different drum sizes: compact, regular/

large and extra large. Almost all are front-loading with doors that can

swing down or to the left or right

71

Typical dryers have three to six different cycles for the desired

dryness and for different fabrics Some dryers also offer a feature

that continues to tumble clothes periodically to keep wrinkles

from setting in An adjustable end-of-cycle signal is available on

most dryers

KEEP YOUR HOME RUNNING WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT

POWER YOUR HOME WITH NATURAL GAS

Unforeseen events like extreme weather and construction

accidents can interrupt electrical service. If your electricity does

go out—at any time—a natural gas standby generator system will

still provide all the power you want. And for people who work from

home, reliable, on-site power generation is a must.

Permanently installed outdoors—much like an air-conditioning

unit—generator systems typically include an automatic transfer

switch, the generator, battery charger and distribution panel.

The transfer switch continually monitors utility power. If there’s

a failure, it starts the generator and transfers your home’s

electrical loads. When utility power resumes, the transfer switch

automatically reverses the process.

Choose one of three power distribution scenarios: essential

loads, managed loads or whole house. Essential Loads supplies

electrical power during an outage only to devices you’ve selected.

Examples are: furnace, lighting, sump pump, refrigerator/freezer,

security system and garage door opener. Whole House provides

generator power to all devices in your home, as if they were

drawing normal utility power.

73

Page 39: ENHANCE YOUR HOME WITH CLEAN, EFFICIENT NATURAL GAS...ON UTILITY BILLS 10 11. Manufacturer trane com ... of warm air, you heat your home faster while using less energy And a gas furnace

Making the right choiceDetermining the proper size for your generator is critical. Estimate your

power needs with the help of a qualified contractor. (Note: Electric

power is measured in watts and 1,000 watts is called a kilowatt.)

Gas line sizing: Have your qualified contractor ensure your gas line is

sized properly; generators draw more BTUs and may require higher

gas pressures.

Compare quotes: Purchase and installation prices may vary

considerably. Compare the warranty and service package for

several models. Get written installation quotes from several licensed

contractors along with references and a contract. Be sure that the

contractor you choose has a proven track record working with standby

power generators and can provide you with immediate parts and

service. Keep in mind that you rarely want to make your decision based

on up-front price alone.
