1972, July 23The Jirst Landsat satellite was launched. This began the monitoring of the earth through remote sensing.


1979MOSS (Map Overlay and Statistical System), the earliest open source GIS, became operational in 1979. It was developed by the US Department of Interior


1982ARC/INFO was released by ESRI. This was the Jirst commercial software of GIS that was released publicly.

1985Grass GIS was released.

1991ArcView was released.


1999ArcGIS, the “overhaul” of GIS software, was released by ESRI.

2002QGIS was Jirst released. It is the biggest open source GIS software to date.


2004 AugustOpenStreetMap was founded in the UK.


2005 FebruaryGoogle Maps was launched.


2005 JuneGoogle Earth was released.


2007 MayStreet View was launched.
