Thanks everyone for your support of our 3 way conferences and our curriculum day. We understand that it is not easy always to make alternative arrangements for your kids, however each of these programs is an essential part of PPPS. I trust that your child’s 3 way was informative and enjoyable, and provided an insight into how and what your child is learning. The ability of a student to set and achieve a goal is a valuable skill which they will need all through life.

The chance to really focus on Science and then on our new reporting program on our curriculum day was extremely worthwhile. Working in teams we spent time improving our science units of work in line with the Victorian curriculum. We then used our energy and enthusiasm to make connections between science and critical and creative thinking, science and technologies (digital and design), science and maths, science and English, science and …………, the

list goes on. These connections are important in making the learning meaningful for our students at different stages of their schooling. Thanks again for your understanding and support. After the excitement of camp and a much appreciated weekend of rest, our year 5 and 6 students and staff returned to a ‘normal’ week of learning at school. For year 6’s the Canberra trip was different to their past experiences of a camp, however the comments were positive and full of enthusiasm for

the experiences. For our helpers at both camps it was a case of having a great time, while also building a new understanding and appreciation of the work that goes into planning and implementing a camp. ‘No down time’ was one comment and that is absolutely true. With the intention of ensuring every child has the opportunity to fulfil the aims of the camp while also having a fabulous time, the staff; teachers, education support personnel and parent volunteers, are on duty 24/7 with a smile and an encouraging word. If you are thinking of volunteering; yes, it is true, there is no ‘down time’ but there are also some real benefits. “I just want to say a big thank you to all for the great opportunity to join you on camp. It was so nice to have that one on one with teachers and helpers and get to know some

Once more Ms Anne McKay is offering the chance for kids to participate in PPPS Has Talent. Auditions begin this Friday and will run each lunchtime including week 9. By then there should be a decision about the acts that will be in the Grand Finale on 22nd June. Anne wanted everyone to know that parents are welcome to come to the auditions. She already has some enthusiastic Year 6 students assisting with organising, compering, judging and technical issues. For those who have not been around before, the Finale is held during class time. 1/2 the school come in sessions 3 and 4 and the other 1/2 in sessions 5 and 6. The school students then vote for their favourite act and the result is announced at Assembly. More about that when the time is closer and we see if we DO have talent at PPPS! Anne has also warned us all that we may also be driven crazy by rehearsals during break times, however, like Anne, we believe it is really worth doing. What a great opportunity for kids to experience personal achievement. We held our ANZAC ceremony on Wednesday this week due to our 3 Way conference and curriculum days. Our JSC’s led us with the following words. Anzac Day is a special time to remember people who have served in wars. It is honoured in towns and cities around Australia and New Zealand on the 25th of April each year. It is the anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in 1915 during World War 1. It is significant because this was our first major military battle as a nation. ANZAC is the name the Generals gave to the soldiers who jumped ashore at a place called Gallipoli, very early on the morning of 25th April, 1915. It stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. Because of the bravery shown by the ANZACs on that day, and for the 8 months the soldiers fought at Gallipoli, ANZAC is also the name we give to a special day that remembers all Australian men and women who have fought and died in all wars. 1. The ANZAC tradition – the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship that are still relevant today – was established on 25 April, 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Anzac Day is the day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who have served and died in war and is celebrated every year on the 25 April. 2. On 25th April every year, men and women who have survived these wars put on their medals and march down our city streets to commemorate ANZAC Day. It is a special day for all Australians to be thankful we live in a country without wars. Students please stand for a minute of silence. “Lest we forget”

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2016 tests for Years 3 and 5 students will be held on Tuesday 10 May, Wednesday 11 May and Thursday 12 May 2016. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in writ-ing, reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The tests will be conducted in the following order: Tuesday 10 May – Literacy – Language Conventions and Writing Wednesday 11 May – Literacy – Reading Thursday 12 May – Numeracy The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement. All students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. During test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual stu-dents who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the sched-uled test. Later in the year, years 3 and 5 parents will receive their child’s personal NAPLAN report. The report will describe their child’s particular skills in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The report will also show how their child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia. For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAPLAN website at

Volunteer Helpers at PPPS

Please note that if you attended a training session in the past, you do NOT need to attend another one. ‘Once trained, we have you for life!’

For new volunteers we are offering two briefings this term

So that we can strengthen our interdependent partnership between Plenty Parklands school and the community we offer training sessions for parent and community members. Over the years our students have benefited from the work and dedication of hundreds of helpers. We are always ready and willing to welcome even more. You may be a new member of our community and keen to offer your help while also getting to know other community members.

The sessions will outline your role and responsibilities with regard to Privacy, Work Cover, Harassment and Occupational Health and Safety legislation. In line with our values, particularly those of Care, Trust and Respect, you will understand that the safety and care of your children are the most important considerations when implementing a program such as volunteer helpers. Also with legislation related to a range of issues it is imperative that ALL volunteers are briefed before they are able to help in any way at school. You need only attend one of the briefings.

This training includes everyone who would like to start to help in any or all of the following areas; canteen, Parents Social and Fundraising sub committee (PSF), interschool sport, uniform shop, classroom helpers (in any area of the curriculum), excursions, special event days, fun day at the end of the year, fruit distribution, gardening, sports coaching, P.E. programs such as the Prep Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) and any transportation of students. In fact, anyone who helps at the school in any way. Please note that helpers on school camps have a special briefing prior to camp. The dates for term 2 are: Tuesday 3 May from 6:00 to 6:30 or Wednesday 4 May from 9:15 to 9:45

Remember that you need to participate in a training session in order to help in any capacity at the school. The briefing takes about 30 minutes and will be held in the conference room (library) or staff lounge (staff room).

After completion of this short briefing, you will be welcome to help at PPPS at any time in the future in a ‘one off’ or ongoing situation.

Please see this invitation as an opportunity to get to know other members of our school community while also providing the students of PPPS with invaluable support and assistance.

Don’t worry; there are no hard questions to answer or problems to solve. You just need a willingness to help and we’ll do the rest!! We look forward to seeing you at one of these sessions. Please complete and return the slip below by Monday 2 May. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….……….

Volunteer Training I will be attending the training session on (Please circle):
