Gone are the days when adages such as ‘microprocessor-controlled equipment meant state-of-the-art technology. This is the age of computers and computer based operations rule the roost. This is especially true when we mean equipment working on multiple channels with dedicated tasks – or when we need a single equipment that can perform a multitude of tasks.

The USIP40 is based on Windows XP – and comes in a rugged housing. It can be directly hooked to a LAN using the Ethernet port and remotely controlled. The data available in this equipment can be “shared” out to other servers or computers. In a standalone mode, this works as a rugged portable Ultrasonic Flaw Detector that can be carried to the site to perform most complicated tasks. This equipment accepts a 3-axis encoder input – and it is possible to load B & C-Scan software in the equipment itself.

Designed in the form of plug-ins, the basic configuration can be enhanced by simple plug-in modules. It is common practice in computers to load upgrades or patches by simply double-clicking an .exe file. Our attempt is the same here. Plug-ins can be easily loaded and all possible future upgrades, wherever possible, will be plug-ins. 20 KHz PRF enables us to configure the equipment as

5-channel or 10-channel equipment. Along with the 3-axis encoder input and appropriate software, this can also be a powerful systems instrument. Digitizing is fast (400 MHz) and due to presence of LAN port in the instrument, it more than compensates the data-transfer speeds between the instrument and remote computer.

Operating Software: The operating software of the USIP-40 is designed in the form of plug-ins. Each plug in adds a new feature. Several plug-ins are currently available – and the concept is that future additions wherever possible will be in the form of plug-ins (files that can be loaded on the USIP 40 to enhance it’s functionality).

TOFD Upgradability: (TOFD accessory/plug-in is under development) 5-Channel system capability for future TOFD application to overcome the critical areas as surface and backwall with additional 4 pulse-echo channels.
