Fundraiser for Sound System Upgrade

We are in need of updating our sound systems in both the Worship Center and the Activity Center According to Brad Griffin our Director of Sound and Audio the microphones that we currently use are analog Without getting too technical and confusing the footprint that they take up in the spectrum is wider than a digital microphone We currently have microphones that we canrsquot use because therersquos not enough space If you have ever heard Dr Poseyrsquos mic drop out or if you hear funny sounds during service thatrsquos coming from the sound system and it is caused by an interference Another business or church in the area is taking up the space used by the analog microphones Along with these needs we are also looking to increase the worship experience with updated technology and lighting

We have the same issue in the Activity Center One of the speaker cabinets is completely blown and the digital signal processor was discontinued in 2008 To make matters worse you can only make changes on it if you use Windows XP (an operating system that was originally released in 2001and is no longer supported by Microsoft including security) We have heard concerns from those who utilize the Activity Center for Sunday school and events that they are unable to hear the speakers even when the system volume is maxed out

Brad evaluated our needs and it will cost $55000 to upgrade the system in the Worship Center and $61000 to upgrade the system in the Activity Center The total for the project is $116000

We will be selling custom Christmas wreaths and decor in the Great Hall each Sunday in November All proceeds will go towards the sound system Crafters are invited to join us in the creation process Please contact Daena Jeane at 817-291-3635 You can also donate to this project directly by specifying sound system in your giving on your check giving envelope or by selecting lsquootherrsquo in PushPay and specifying lsquosound systemrsquo in the notes We thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping us improve your worship experience

New Pastoral Care Communication PolicyA new pastoral care policy has been created in an effort to better communicate information to our faith family when a church member has passed away Going forward the church office will be sending an electronic notice with as much up-to-date information as we have at that moment to everyone who has provided us with an e-mail address We hope that this will offer a better method to share information in a timely manner

Letrsquos Plan AheadSunday November 17 | 2pm | C-209

Early in my ministry I was at a seminar filled with fellow United Methodist pastors The topic of the seminar was how to grow our churches During one of the breakout sessions we were having a conversation about evangelism in the local church Several pastors were bemoaning the fact that their members just donrsquot share their faith or invite others I then shared the story of a young woman who had moved to New Orleans to start a new job I invited her to church where I served as the associate pastor After several months of conversations and attending Bible studies I had the blessing of leading her to faith in Jesus Christ I then encouraged others to share When I looked around the group most the heads had dropped as they just looked at the floor

Evangelism is the ONE thing Jesus charged us to do When pastors donrsquot do it the church is in trouble And when church members think ldquoThatrsquos the pastorrsquos job Thatrsquos why we pay herhimrdquo the church is in trouble The reality is as followers of Jesus Christ itrsquos all our responsibility Sometimes we make evangelism out to be something so difficult that we choose to do nothing about it So here are seven easy things to do to be more evangelistic

1 Pray for opportunities each day to develop relationship with non-Christians It all starts with prayer Try this prayer and see how God might answer it Pray ldquoAllow me this day O God to come into contact with someone who may not know the Gospel where I can share in love or deedrdquo

2 Have a meal each week with an unchurched personfamily Everybody loves to eat It can be the one time of the day when we slow down enough to get to know someone

3 Frequent the same coffee shoprestaurant and begin to develop relationships with the staff and other regular customers

4 Go to the same non-Christian barberstylist If your barberstylist is a Christian change That time in the chair can be a significant way to get to know that person and even share what Jesus in going in your life today

5 Join an organization to connect with non-Christians It could be anything PTA a gym a social service group Friends of the Library Just join one and commit to it and the people serving there

6 Develop meaningful relationships with your non-Christian co-workers7 Gift Christmas gifts (like baked goods) to your neighbors and use that as an entreacutee to build a deeper more

meaningful relationship Remember the holidays can be the loneliest season for a lot of people

ANNOUNCEMENTS

A NOT SO WILD AND CRAZY IDEA (MAYBE)

On August 21st I walked into Samrsquos and couldnrsquot believe what I saw Still in the throws of summer I almost stumbled when I turned the corner and came upon a Christmas display of items to buy It was supposed to be 99 degrees that day with a heat index of 105 and 126 days until Christmas All that is to say Irsquom talking about Christmas much earlier than Irsquod like to but only because retail America has already been talking about it for months So here goeshellipAh Christmas I love this time of year ndash holiday parties Christmas trees hot chocolate and the spirit of generosity that seems to swell up in our society Therersquos something about peace on earth and goodwill towards others that makes me think about other people a little more than usual

But to cap off the season is one of the strangest rituals all year Itrsquos something we would never consider doing at any other time And yet itrsquos something so ingrained in us that we barely give it a second thought We celebrate a birthday and give gifts to everyone else except the one whose birthday wersquore celebrating Letrsquos be honest in receiving gifts Christmas so often becomes about us So forgive me if Irsquom about to state the ob-vious but itrsquos something that maybe we all need to be reminded of itrsquos NOT your birthday and itrsquos NOT my birthday itrsquos Jesusrsquo birthday So before you begin making all your shopping lists and diving headlong into Grey Thursday Black Friday or Cyber Monday I want to pose an idea to you as radical as it may be

1 This year give a gift to the one whose birthday we really celebrate on Dec 25th AND what ifhellip

2 The largest gift you give this Christmas is to the one whose birthday it is

In December of 1903 after many attempts Orville and Wilbur Wright successfully got their ldquoflying machinerdquo off the ground and into the air at Kitty Hawk Thrilled over the accomplishment they telegraphed home to their sister Kath-erine ldquoWe have actually flown 120 feet Will be home for Christmasrdquo Katherine hurried to the editor of the local news-paper and showed him the message He glanced at it and said ldquoHow nice The boys will be home for Christmasrdquo He totally missed the big news - for the first time in human history man had flown May we not miss the Good News of Jesusrsquo birth and the real reason for season this Christmas May the first and largest gift celebrate His birth

UTA Wesley Foundation which ministers to our local college students and United Methodist Student Day which empow-ers students to fund college through scholarships and the UM Student Loan Fund
