Established in 1999 and regularly held since 2001, Orto Fest is an ambitious festival with a wide ranging scope of its musical programme. It takes place in Orto Bar, a legendary bar for rock aficionados. Even though rock music is its predominant sound, the festival also offers pop(-rock), metal, hip hop, and folk acts. Besides regularly staging foreign musicians, who are coming from all over the world, the festival mostly hosts Slovene musicians and its yearly selection always features a combination of some older, cult artists with a showing of what is currently happening on the different local music scenes.

Capa’s retrospective exhibition features 97 black-and-white photographs showing pivotal events from the five wars he documented in his brief life: from the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II including the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. The exhibition also presents a series of portraits of his friends and artists, including Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso.Apart from Henri Cartier-Bresson, Capa was one of the most celebrated founding members of the Magnum Photos agency in Paris in 1947; in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of its existence the exhibition materials are being supplied by this notable photo agency. Open: 10:00 - 19:00, Sundays 10:00 - 14:00. Closed: Mondays, holidays

A New Age is Coming! Industry - Labour - Capital25 Oct - 21 May, City Museum of LjubljanaThe exhibition on industry in Ljubljana also topicalizes the ever changing relations between labour and capital. It depicts how Ljubljana dealt with new industries as they arrived and offers the experience of “travel through time and space”. The show starts off with the sugar refinery on the banks of the Ljubljanica river. It goes on to depict capitalists of the time, businessmen whose vision made Ljubljana into an industrial hub. At the same time, the exhibits tell the story of the life of the proletariat. The rise of industry in the late 19th and early 20th century takes a sharp turn after WWII, when factories were nationalised and many capitalists chased out of the country. The end of the war marked the beginning of the ascent of large socialist enterprises. The next break came in the 1990s, when Slovenia shed socialism and enterprises were privatised. Sundays at 16:30 guided tours in English.
Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00 - 21:00. Closed: Mondays
Damjan Gale: The Architect of Light, a retrospective photography exhibition 28 Mar - 4 Jun, Jakopič GalleryDamjan Gale was an architect that photographed and a photographer that put architecture in the focus of his interests. He knew and understood architecture in the entirety of its process of creation. The same can be said for his photography - from the process of taking photographs, setting up motifs, work in the darkroom and all the way to the final presentation - there were no coincidences in this process, and the final result always had a sublime sense of balance between the aesthetic and documentary. His photographic oeuvre consists of interpretations of contemporary Slovenian architecture, the baroque in Slovenia and works of Jože Plečnik. Especially important in his oeuvre are Plečnik’s columns, with which Gale was a regular guest of exhibitions at home and abroad. During his lifetime and

after his premature death, Gale never received an expert evaluation and a detailed overview of his work. However, due to the extraordinary quality and the wealth of his oeuvre, it is necessary to understand the author as a key representative of Slovenian architectural photography.Sundays at 16:30 guided tours in English. Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays
Corporeality, group exhibition 23 Feb - 9 Apr, City Art Gallery of LjubljanaThe exhibition Corporeality continues with the research and display of paintings, photography and video art in contemporary Slovenian culture, based on a selected theme or content. This is already the third selection and exhibition in which artists focus on a theme that is strongly present around us but perhaps underexposed. In this case, it is corporeality in its widest sense, of both animate and inanimate nature. The exhibition presents the following artists: Uroš Abram, Rajko Bizjak, Robert Černelč, Ana Čigon, Jurij Kalan, Tina
Kolenik, Samo, Kamila Volčanšek.Open: 11:00 - 19:00. Closed: Mondays Admission free
Puppet Museum at Ljubljana CastleSlovenia is a country with a rich tradition of puppeteering. The Puppet Museum’s permanent exhibition, set up by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, introduces you to the history of puppeteering in Slovenia and the creativity of contemporary Slovenian puppeteers, presents the most popular puppet characters, and gives you an insight into puppeteering techniques and the process of creating a puppet show. After viewing the exhibition, you can try your hand at puppeteering skills.Open: 10:00 - 19:00 daily
Zoran Mušič (1909-2005)Permanent exhibition at the National GalleryZoran Mušič, the best known 20th century Slovenian-born painter. He mostly painted landscapes, still lifes, portraits, Dalmatian donkeys and horses, trees, views of Venice, double portraits with his wife Ida, and poignant self-portraits depicting him as an old man. His visual motifs were always related to the Slovenian region of Kras and its typical scenes. He became world famous with his series of paintings We Are Not the Last, in which he relived the scenes he experienced in the Dachau concentration camp. Ljubljana’s National Gallery displays the world’s only permanent survey exhibition of Mušič’s work, which explores the entire range of the famous artist’s painting techniques. The majority of exhibited works come from the Ljuban, Milada and Vanda Mušič Collection, owned by the family of the artist’s brother.Open: 10:00 - 18:00, Thursdays 10:00-20:00. Closed: Mondays
The new permanent exhibition at the Plečnik House in Trnovo presents the most important projects of the late architect. Plečnik’s creativity comes to life through the plans, models and photographs of his creations such as the Zacherl House in Vienna, Prague Castle, the National and University Library in Ljubljana, the Ljubljana Central Market, Žale Cemetery, the Church of St. Michael at the Ljubljana Marshes and numerous other masterpieces. Several plans of Plečnik’s never realized visions are also on display. The Cathedral of Freedom, the master’s vision of the Slovenian parliament, is especially worthy of our attention.Guided tours: every hour, on the hour (the last guided tour at 17:00). A group may be a maximum of seven persons.Open: 10:00 - 18:00. Closed: Mondays

The Budapest Festival Orchestra is one of Hungarian music scene’s major success stories, being rated among the world’s top ten orchestras. One of the secrets of its success lies in the way Iván Fischer and his musicians are constantly on the lookout for new paths; never sticking to one method, era, composer or approach. Iván Fischer is the founder and Music Director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Beyond the resoundingly energetic and uniquely refined musical expression, reminiscent of chamber music, it is the orchestra’s innovative concerts that appeal to appreciative audiences. The Festival Orchestra is driven by openness towards the new and the unknown, by curiosity and attention to detail.Soloists: Dejan Lazić - piano; Oszkár Ökrös - cimbalom

Bassless is a Slovenian a cappella group and has been active on the music scene since April 2013. Group performs arrangements of a wide range of musical genres (from pop, rock, disco and dance music, to funk, jazz and blues) as well as original compositions. The group’s distinctive and recognisable musical expression, which often contains interesting features from popular and rhythmic techno music, is seasoned with elements of melancholic jazz. The musicians usually adorn the selected songs in their own vocal guise, but here and there they still like to surprise audiences with a classical a cappella arrangement. In February this year, Baseless was nominated for the prestigious American CARA Award for their latest music video Stuck (Caro Emerald).

The famous instrumental pop duo 2Cellos consists of two young cello virtuosos from Slovenia and Croatia respectively. Already before they embarked on a successful pop music career, Luka Šulić and Stjepan Hauser had made a name for themselves in classical music circles. 2Cellos rose to fame with their cover version of Michael Jackson’s hit song Smooth Criminal, whose video has received over 11 million views on YouTube. The song’s success was followed by the release of the duo’s highly acclaimed cover of the Guns n’ Roses song Welcome to the Jungle and a series of successful concerts across the USA and elsewhere in the world.

In 2014, at the 55th Jazz Festival Ljubljana, Porter had the packed Križanke audiences eating out of his hand, and his 2017 Ljubljana concert is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year. There are few (male) singers praised as highly by the jazz community as Gregory Porter, a mellow but also booming baritone who draws inspiration from the 1970’s soul and classical jazz ballads and popular tunes (Nat King Cole) as well as engaged gospel and blues. The evening will include this incontestable vocal jazz king’s latest album, Take Me to the Alley, as well as older hits, most notably Laura.

Volker Bertelmann aka Hauschka, the sonic magician whose prepared piano generates experimental dance music and erases the borders between contemporary classical compositions, electro-acoustic experiments and pop music, will perform in Slovenia for the first time. Volker‘s playing seems as much informed by modern electronica or Indonesian gamelan as it is by any classical cannon. With the aid of his interventions, the piano becomes as much a machine for generating rhythms as it does for melody. Now and again, Hauschka utilises additional, non-piano sounds such as synthesizer, drum machine, electric bass, or other acoustic instruments like vibraphone, strings or brass.

In his mind mapping of the ballet Symphony of Sorrowful Songs director Tomaž Pandur entered the landscape of time, the imaginative, unexplained and untouchable circle of our being, the landscape of life and death, the intimate history of losses, the quest of truth - as a traveller who can see farther in time and space. He has created to the music by Henrik Mikołaj Górecki seven scenic icons, coinciding in their narrative flow with the visuality of suprematism. In his Symphony of Sorrowful Thoughts Tomaž Pandur sculpted in collaboration with the choreographer Ronald Savković the time of the unreachable, unutterable and unperceivable - the cybernetic time of the theatrical reflective equation.
