CSR in India is traditionally seen as an act of philanthropy. In recent decades, CSR has evolved from a Philanthropic activity to a way of managing the business to gain positive impacts on Communities and Environment. The concept of CSR was introduced in India through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs by publishing the “Corporate Social Responsibility Voluntary Guidelines” in the year 2009 and subsequently, CSR was introduced in “Companies Act, 2013”. Under this Act, CSR provisions were made mandatory for the companies with an annual turnover of 1,000 crore or more, or a net worth of 500 crore or more, or a net profit of `5 crore or more. Sec.135 of the Act encourages eligible companies to spend a minimum of 2% of their average net profit on CSR activity. The act also encourages giving preference to local communities for CSR implementation and promotes transparency and disclosure.

Sustainable Development under the circumstances of current industrial challenges in India can be achieved only by adapting Environmental and Social policies aligned to the business context. Companies need to adopt the best management practices in managing their CSR programs such as developing time bound strategic CSR plans with measurable goals, participatory stakeholder engagement, CSR reporting, bottom-up approach for selecting CSR programs, result oriented CSR programs, and identifying suitable implementation partner, etc.
