General Thesis:

The idea of space syntax is to break down space

into singular components that can be analyzed as

networks and represented through maps and graphs.

The concept and groundwork was first published

in 1984 by Bill Hillier and Julienne Hanson. Space is

broken down into axial maps, it is described as a set of

syntactic relations, both of buildings and other spaces,

that define a particular space. The analysis focuses on

the relations between the single parts of the axial map.

The intention of creating a space syntax analysis for

this specific site was to find out if the arrangement

of the market booths can be categorized through

their pattern and layout and not through subjective

observation.

Shown are axial and liquid maps of the area.

Mean Depth:

The mean depth tells us the average number of turns

it would need us to take to reach every other space

within the system

The mean depth gives a surprisingly good correlation

with real people movement along the lines. (Turner)

Conclusion:

The colors in the plan equal the observed arrangement

and hierarchy of attraction at the flea market. The higher

the values the more likely it was to find professional

sellers at the market.

Observations showed that the path over the fields is

used more frequently, due to the shape it is broken

down into single lines and looses its actual value.

The path would have had a better value if were drawn

as a straight line as seen in the example on the right.

Analyzed on a larger scale the internal structure of

the fleamarket looses its value. Connections to public

transport and the city do not interfere with the layout

of the market.

In the map on the right you can see that the marked

appears blue due to the scale of the map.
