The industrial sector plays a key role indevelopment of the country. In striving forbuilding an industrialized nation, it is necessaryto establish industries. Therefore, the State hasestablished industrial zones by organizing a largenumber of the manageable and commercial scaleindustries at one place. With a view to improvingthe industrial sector, the government has beenestablishing factories and workshops. On 31December 2009, a ceremony to open the Multi-purpose Diesel Engine Factory and theHydropower Turbine and Generator Factorytook place at Thagara Industrial Region ofThagara in Yedashe Township, Bago Division.

The construction of Multi-purpose DieselEngine Factory commenced in October 2006. Atpresent, the factory project has completedconstruction task, installation and test-runningof the machinery and test production.

The plan is under way to manufacture about700 units of three types of engines namely 6V 128zc, 8V 128 zc and 12V 128 zc at the factory yearly. The factory will produce necessary diesel enginesfor vessels of inland and coastal waterways, powergenerators, motor vehicles and heavy machinery.

The Hydropower Turbine and GeneratorFactory was constructed in May 2007, and atpresent, the factory project has completedconstruction of the factory buildings, machineequipment and test-running.

The factory plans to produce about 50 sets of100-kilowatt, 500-kilowatt and 2000-kilowattFrancis turbines and generators per year. Hence, the factory will satisfy the demand of hydropowerturbines and generators depending on theavailability of water resources across the nation.

As emphasis is being placed onindustrialization in building a modern anddeveloped nation, technocrats are to activelytake part in both government sector and privatesector at full capacity.

Winner of Noble Prize in Economics ProfessorDr Joseph Stiglitz in Nay Pyi Taw on 17 Decemer2009 said that Myanmar had the potential fordevelopment; and that if Myanmar made economicreform depending on rich resources, fertile soil, temperate climate pattern, hardworking people andsocial resources, it would be on the threshold ofdevelopment in a matter of years.

Myanmar is naturally a beautiful land withtemperate climate patterns of summer, the rainyseason and the cold season. Unlike some countries,it is neither very cold nor very hot. I wonder ifMyanmar has been created by celestial beings andhigher celestial beings with impressive forests, mountain ranges, rivers, creeks and beaches.Myanmar is like a paradise on the earth.

“Yet, its natural beauty and rich naturalresources attracted dangers to the nation. Dutch,

Portuguese, French and British colonialists were inintense rivalry against one another to colonizeunderdeveloped Asian and African countries, like lionskilling and eating a large group of deer. The last colonyof British colonialists was Myanmar under the rule ofKing Thibaw. They annexed the nation, but not in ashort period.

“For 62 years from 1824 to 1885, they were inthe process of colonizing the nation.

It was on 1 January 1886, Myanmar was annexedto the Empire of the British Queen.

Myanmar was removed from the map of theworld.

Then, the people were deprived of the right tohoist the State flag anywhere.

The sovereign nation was reduced to a colony.Myanmar people became slaves. The Britishdemonetized the currency that had been in circulationsince the time of Myanmar monarchs. After Japanesetroops had entered the nation, the Japanese militarygovernment demonetized the currency that had been incirculation since the time of the British. Myanmarbecame completely impoverished. After reenteringMyanmar, the British onesidedly declared Japanesecurrency notes illegitimate. I am confident that at thattime no one was as poor as Myanmar people. Thewhole country was reduced to ash due to the aggressivewars launched by the British. The alien governments’torture was intolerable for the people. In consequence, the living standard of Myanmar people came bottom inthe times of the colonialits and Fascists.

It took Myanmar people 62 years to regain freedomfrom the British. During the period, Myanmar was fartoo immersed to regain independence, sacrificing livesof a large number of its people. In the figurative sense ofthe word, Myanmar had to spend oceans of blood of itspeople to regain independence. The British beheadedMingyi Shwe La Yaung to frighten the revolutionaries, making it clear how much cruel they were.

“To build trust is of great importance indemocratization. Political scientists say democracywill be long-lasting only if trust is built firmly.

Institution is of two types: State institution andhuman society institution. Trust must well overwhelmboth institutions.”

Writer Maung Sue SanTen Kinds of Trust, Democracy and Image

Myanmar regained independence from the Britishgovernment on 4 January 1948. The Union of Myanmardeclined the British offer to grant the nation Dominicanstatus, and invitation to the British Commonwealth.Myanmar stood as independent, sovereign nation. Itwas them independent politically, but Myanmar peoplewere still impoverished in terms of economy.

The country was on the edge of collapse dueto some narrow-minded political leaders withoutbroad political view. In particular, the majority ofthe people went through the hell of evilconsequences of armed revolts. Local people didnot dare to live in the rural areas due to armedinsurgency and lawless acts. They were in povertyin urban areas.

Anyhow, Myanmar managed to put an end tointernal armed insurgency. Successive governmentsworked for national development. In the period of 62years, the nation has not been able to achieve thedevelopment rate of China and India yet, still laggingbehind other countries in development. The nationwas hunted for colonization for 62 years (1824-1885); it fell under alien rule for 62 years (1886-1947), and it has struggled for 62 years (1948-2009).

Nearly the lifespan of a man does not takelong, but the current of history keeps on flowing.

Till today, subversives are still threatening thenation. However, according to the objectiveconditions, it is impossible Myanmar will become aminion of other countries. Myanmar is capable ofstanding on its own feet, and building itself up. Thatis comprehensible to all.

The people have taken 62 years to reachthe top of the hole in which they came underthe process of colonization for 62 years, andwere in dire straits for 62 years. Now, theyare out of the hole in the year of 2010. Whyare some persons trying to get into the holeagain? We have to try to transform the nationfrom old to new system.

Towards perpetuation of Independence

What are needed forperpetuity of

Independence,Grandpa?

The majorrequirement is

national solidarity.You’d better think

about it Grandson ...

Unity is strength,isn’t it?

Only with strength youare independent and

you can stand on yourown feet.

And when youare self-reliant

(from page 6)The people gave top priority to non-

disintegration of the Union. All have built nationalunity for a couple of decades for ensuring non-disintegration of national solidarity.

We all love independence. We safeguard our country at risk to our lives

for perpetuation of sovereignty. I want all to takelessons from past events. The people have taken 62years to reach the top of the hole in which they cameunder the process of colonization for 62 years, andwere in dire straits for 62 years. Now, they are out ofthe hole in the year of 2010. Why are some personstrying to get into the hole again? We have to try totransform the nation from old to new system.

“The State Peace and Development Councillaid down the seven-step Road Map in 2003, and it isin pursuit of it. In May 2008, the constitution wasapproved through a referendum. “The interest of the

people in Myanmar in political affairs is that they lookforward to some positive changes after the 2010election. They do not want revolution, either.”

Professor Robert H TaylorPolitical scientist

Perspective, The Voice, 17-12-2009The people trust the Tatmadaw government.

The government managed to make peace with 17major and 20 small national race armed groups risingagainst successive governments. It has showed itsbenevolent attitudes and goodwill towards them. Itdoes not speak much, but has great tenacity in carryingout prudent projects that need great patience.

The government has not done much to refute theaccusations of internal and external anti-governmentelements, because accusations alone cannot work wellto break the nation into parts. The government does notharbour grudge, nor does it have any intention toretaliate.

Let it be, but –Anything that can harm the public interest is

not acceptable to it. It is opposed to the sanctions thathave adverse effects to the life of the people. Nogovernment wants any forms of attacks designed toharm the socio-economic life of the people. It isunder a duty to dissuade those foreign countries fromimposing unfair sanctions against Myanmar.

With little cooperation and support fromabroad, the government has been building roads andbridges and improving the infrastructures at theunprecedented level. Thanks to the river-spanningbridges, national races have more access to amicablerelations between them.

And as a result of hundreds of dams, reserviours, sluice gates, river water pumping stations, and underground water tapping stations, there hasbeen a sharp increase in outputs of crops. Over thepast 20 years, the living standard of countrymen andwomen has been far better than that previously.

Whatever it is, the Independence Day enters62nd anniversary in 2010, and I am confidentMyanmar will soon see a landmark, surmountingvarious forms of disruptions.

May the independence of Myanmar remainperpetual! (Hailing the Independence Day)

(from page 1)oriented economic system since 1988. The establishment of new towns andindustrial zones by the government, housing projects and use of electric poweredhousehold goods by the people had increased the demand for power supply.

The rapid development of the country has trigered the dramatic rise in demandfor power supply in the country. To fulfill the requirements in the power sector, theMinistry of Electric Power No. 2 has implemented the power supply projects and theministry has taken the first priority to supply power to industrial zones. Thegovernment has established industrial zones across the country as part of efforts forbuilding a modern developed State. The following are industrial zones across thecountry.

Though there were small-scale factories and industries in the past, today’sfactories and industries have enormous capacity and run at full capacity. Theincreased number of factories and industries with sizeable number of workershas made enormous demands for electricity. Besides, use of electric poweredhousehold goods and escalators and elevators at high-rise housing have causedthe spirally upward consumption of power. Following is the required amount ofelectricity in the power supply network to sufficiently supply power to thepeople.

Now, power plants only can generate 556 megawatts due to decrease inproducing electricity of hydropower plants in summer when fewer water can be storedand decrease in generating capacity of some old power plants although the amountof electricity demand is 1555.25 megawatts. A total of 856 megawatts of electricityis being produced and distributed averagely including 300 megawatts from Shweli (1)Hydropower Plant of Ministry of Electric Power No (1). So, the Ministry ofElectricity No (2) is distributing electricity alternately to the public from the nationalpower grid by setting groups in order to keep balance between supply anddemand of electric power.

Demand for electric power increases year after year while arrangementsare being made to build more power plants with the aim of producing moreelectricity. The government put first priority in building mega structures. Thereare 16 hydropower plants which are under construction – four plants will emergein 2010, five in 2011, three in 2012, one in 2015 and three later in the year of 2015.It is learnt that electricity will be in surplus in 2015 as the projects which aretargeted to finish in 2010/2011 will fulfill the demand for electric power.

Groundnut, sesame and beans andpulses are to be cultivatedon the fields where notsuitable for growing sum-mer paddy. Arrangementsare being made to trans-form the croplands intofarmlands, explained thestaff officer. The dam is calledYanpe, that is to saydamming Yanpe creek. The Yanpe creek, whereKing Dut tabaungwaged the war againstPrincess Panhtwa, is

famous as a historicalplace in the course ofMyanmar history. Withstrong current, the Yanpecreek enjoys an enormousamount of inflow water.Construction on YanpeDam began in 1999-2000and completed in 2000-2001 by spending on thesum of 1692.60 millionkyats. The dam washanded over to the Irriga-tion Department (Main-tenance) on 26 Novem-ber 2003.

French public debt recordsnew high in third quarterPARIS, 1 Jan — France’s public debt hit a record high

in the third quarter following a series of governmentalstimulus measures, the official statistics bureau INSEEsaid on Wednesday.

The public debt reached 1.46 trillion euros (2.1 tril-lion US dollars) after a 29.4-billion-euro (about 42.28-billion-dollars) increase during the July-Septemberperiod.

It accounted for 75.8 percent of the country’s do-mestic gross product (GDP).

INSEE predicted the public debt would continue torise, and could amount to 77.9 percent of the GDP inthe fourth quarter as the government maintains extraspending in a bid to deal with the economic crisis.

Massive governmental spending contributed muchto France’s leading recovery from the crisis in the sec-ond quarter. But the heavy debt was also likely to slowthe country’s long-term development.—Xinhua

BEIJING, 1 Jan—China will launch a na-tionwide epidemiological investigation ofA/H1N1 influenza next year in a bid toprovide more scientific data for furtherprevention and control measures.

According to a circular released by theMinistry of Health on Wednesday, the re-search will be focused on 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regionsincluding Beijing, Shandong and Henan.A total of 54,000 people 4,500 for eachprovince—will be surveyed.

The research will be carried out in threetime periods: next January, from Marchto April and from August to September.

Experts with the ministry said that cur-rently a large number of patients only

have slight flu symptoms and many po-tential infection cases exist, which meansthe official number of flu cases can nolonger reflect the actual epidemic situa-tion in the country.

According to the experts, the countryis in urgent need of understanding the in-fection level in different age groups indifferent time periods in order to map outfurther prevention and control plan.

Also, a serum epidemiological investi-gation will be launched next year acrossthe country, sampling 400 people for eachof the 31 provinces, municipalities, au-tonomous regions and the Xinjiang Pro-duction and Construction Corps.

say policeSEOUL, 1 Jan — South Korean police have arrested

a man who faked his own death—and cremation—tosecure insurance payouts totalling 1.8 billion won ($1.5million). Police said a man surnamed Chung, 51 andhis wife, Ahn, 49, hatched the scheme after their busi-ness in Indonesia ran into trouble.

The wife made life insurance claims to six Koreancompanies after reporting that her husband had diedin a motorcycle accident on Batam Island in Indone-sia. The Korea Times said the couple bribed Indone-sian doctors to supply a death certificate and submit-ted it to the Korean Embassy in Jakarta. Ahn alsovideotaped a “cremation ceremony’’ for Chung to bol-ster her claim.

A policewoman in Seoul’s Namdaemun District saidthey have also issued a warrant for the couple’s nephewas an accessory to the fraud.” There have been a fewinsurance frauds faking death in Korea, but this wasthe first time for such a case abroad,’’ she said, declin-ing to be identified.

Insurance scams are common in South Korea, withthe number of fake claims rising amid the economicdownturn. In a case reported by police in April, awoman who held a funeral for her husband after claim-ing he was lost at sea scammed insurers out of$800,000 before he was found alive and well.

Efflorescence makes it hard for mete-orites to stay in densely populated areas,Hu explained, but they could last for mil-lions of years in Antarctica’s dry, coldweather. Many of such meteorites werestopped by the mountains as they werecarried along by running glaciers, he said. Therefore, a lot of meteorites could befound around the Antarctic mountain ar-eas.—Xinhua
