Essential Parent’s (EP’s) ambition To help expectant and new parents bond with their children during the early years, and help those children grow into strong, resilient and independent teenagers and adults. Early Years intervention is essential to improve the life chances of children, especially those from less affluent communities.

How EP is achieving its ambition EP supports and promotes the factors that help children reach their potential – including breastfeeding, bonding, attachment, good mental health, responsive feeding, cognitive, physical and emotional development, and many more. EP is a digital information service offering expert, evidence-based professional written and video content for conception, pregnancy, birth, babies, toddlers, children and teenagers. Health Professionals can use the EP 'eDelivery' system to respond to parents' needs and deliver bespoke content direct to them at the click of a button. EP is officially supported by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and follows the advice of experts in the field including:

• Professor Robert Winston • UNICEF UK Baby Friendly • Public Health England • The Child Accident Prevention Trust • The St John Ambulance • The National Literacy Trust • iCan Communiation Charity • The Meningitis Research Trust • Mental Health specialists • The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry • The Samaritans • Health Visitors, Midwives, GPs, Paediatricians, Obstetricians, Sleep specialists,

Attachment specialists, Teachers, and many more

2

EP online content is already used by health professionals and parents:

• The digital version of every UK baby’s “red book” – the eRedBook • By Midwives in NHS hospitals • By UK local authorities • On internal TV screens in over 100 UK maternity hospitals • By the RCPCH to help train junior doctors and paediatricians internationally • By UK Children’s Centres both for staff training and for parents • By Barnardo’s to help train Children’s Centre staff and to help parents and carers • In Mother & Baby units in UK prisons • The baby care content is given to NCT teachers when they obtain their teaching

licenses

EP is based on the principle that a combination of written and video content, available online, is the best way to deliver effective interventions alongside the clinical pathway. In some circumstances – for example, teenage mental health, digitally delivered information is sometimes more effective than the clinical pathway. Also, rural communities and some other hard-to-reach communities are often better served digitally. In general, digitally deliverable content forms a very useful service that can complement existing support of families by health care professionals.

EP content Please see Appendix 1 for the current full list of content for conception, pregnancy, birth, baby, toddler, child and teenager.

3

The EP 'eDelivery' system EP provides three distinct methods of delivering information and support to parents via health practitioners.

1) Universal standardised pathways (EP content)

These are pre-selected content ‘bundles’ to be ‘eDelivered’ at certain time points on the child’s pathway from 0-19 years. For example:

• The MWs appointments (see Appendix 1 Pregnancy and Baby) • The 5 mandated HV appointments (ditto)

Pre-selected content bundles can also be created for eDelivery:

• When a child is entering/ in nursery/ primary school/ secondary school/ university

2) Bespoke selection (EP content)

Health Practitioners, children’s centre staff and teachers can also select additional, specific content for a particular parent or a targeted group of families. For example: a mother struggling with breastfeeding can be sent content to help her with breastfeeds at home; a nursery teacher can eDeliver content on separation anxiety, potty training, bonding etc; a parent needing support with a child who is self-harming can be sent the relevant content from teenage mental health experts – and so on.

3) Other local and national leaflets and information

Health practitioners will be able to eDeliver many of the leaflets that they currently spend time and money printing, handing out and posting to parents - including leaflets from groups such as UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative, as well as local information, such as breastfeeding peer support groups.

4

The EP 'eDelivery' software

Using the EP software, health practitioners and community workers can select specific EP content and ‘eDeliver’ it to parents/ teenagers via email, text, Whatsapp etc. Content can be sent and received from smart phones, tablets and computers. A record of the courses that have been sent and read will be saved for the sender. These analytics can be collated and used in many different ways by EP users – CNST and UNICEF requirements for NHS hospitals, CQC requirements for private hospitals, litigation and so on. The service is very simple to use. The prototype is shown below but a new version is being developed to include new functionality based on feedback from health care professionals; e.g., language translation options, text messaging, team sharing:

5

'eDelivery' trials The EP 'eDelivery' service prototype is being trialed at:

• The Whittington hospital • The Royal Bath hospital • Rochdale Local Authority • Bury Local Authority • Oldham Local Authority

The eRedbook, PHE & NHS Digital The EP digital service is being adopted by our sponsor, Kenny Gibson, at Public Health England, as part of the NHS and PHE's range of Healthy Child Programmes and in the roll-out of the eRedbook. EP content and information for parents is being aligned with Healthy Child Programme Indicator Matrix as well as Better Births and Perinatal Mental Health Indicators. This means EP content and the eDelivery system will be approved as an intervention within the National Events Management Service and the NHS Digital Provider Framework. By integrating our content and eDelivery system with SNOWMED (by April 2019) our interventions - videos, articles and leaflets - can be recorded in the digital maternal and child health records.

6

The eDelivery system - what parents receive Bespoke, targeted and standardised information is sent direct to a parents’ or teenagers’ smartphone, tablet or computer.
