IMS Consumer Health Classification
Classification Principles
• Classification is applied to a pack in a country − So need to review at pack level as there could be valid different codes for different packs with
different positioning
− So, within a ‘product’ or an ‘international product’ it can be correct to have different classes
• Positioning used for classification is that found on the information about a pack in a country − So if there are different messages in different countries this could then give different
classifications in different countries
• OTC classes usually contain active medicinal substances; more mechanical ‘medical’ products are in the Patient Care classes − So the products for scars that contain eg allantoin are classified in 06V and those with eg
polyurethane in 46A
• Multiple positionings can exist for the same product in the same country − So, there could be multiple options for classification codes
