Living our Faith

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the scouts this past weekend by attending the breakfast and/or purchasing a wreath. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is on Monday, Dec 9. Because the 8th falls on a Sunday this year, the solemnity gets moved. We'll have Mass at 8 am and 7 pm. The Sunday evening Mass on the 8th will still be the 2nd Sunday of Advent, not a vigil for Immaculate Conception. Advent Evening of Recollection. At 5 pm on Sunday, December Dec 15, we will have a reflection given by our parishioner, Asher Gelzer-Govatos, on, "The Cultivation of Christmas Spirit: Cherishing Advent with T.S. Eliot's Christmas Poems." After the talk will be Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Confessions. I'll have one other priest to help hear confessions that evening. The evening will wrap up at about 6:30pm. The Rorate Caeli Mass this year is at 6:30 pm, Tue Dec 17. After the Mass, the PSR children will form a procession in honor of St. Lucy, whose feast day falls on Dec 13. It is a wonderful way to really get into the Christmas spirit. Mass Explanations – Relics For our St. Lucy celebration this year, we have an actual relic of St. Lucy herself. Relics are a bit mysterious – Why do we keep them? Relics were important to the early Church. For instance, after the martyrdom of St. Polycarp, the Christians who were there said, “We took up his bones, which are more valuable than precious stones and finer than refined gold, and laid them in a suitable place, where the Lord will permit us to gather ourselves together, as we are able, in gladness and joy and to celebrate the birthday of his martyrdom.” The relics were a way of saying that the great saint still worshiped with them, that even though he was dead he had not been cut off from the communion of saints. The habit of venerating relics is Scriptural. The use of the bones of Elisha brought a dead man to life: “So Elisha died, and they buried him. Now bands of Moabites used to invade the land in the spring of the year. And as a man was being buried, lo, a marauding band was seen and the man was cast into the grave of Elisha; and as soon as the man touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood on his feet” (2 Kgs. 13:20-21). Similar are the cases of the woman cured of a hemorrhage by touching the hem of Christ’s cloak (Matt. 9:20-22) and the sick who were healed when Peter’s shadow passed over them (Acts 5:14-16). “And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them” (Acts 19:11-12). Relics are not magical and they are not worshiped. St Jerome says, “We do not worship, we do not adore [relics], for fear that we should bow down to the creature rather than to the creator, but we venerate the relics of the martyrs in order the better to adore him whose martyrs they are."
