We welcome you to Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration today as we celebrate the miracle of the Incarnation and the birth of Jesus Christ. Our mission is to seek and serve in all persons the very one whose birth we celebrate tonight, so if you are looking for a community that nurtures an active, generous, and inclusive faith, we invite you to join us! We are rich and poor, old and young, lifelong Christians and new to the faith. So whoever you are, there is a place for you in this community.

Ushers can guide you to the most convenient restrooms. A unisex restroom is available in the Gathering Space.

Our professionally staffed nursery is open for the 3:00, 5:00, and 8:00 p.m. services. An Usher can help you locate it.

Hearing assistance devices are available. Ask an Usher if you would like one.

The FeasT oF The NaTiviTyThis evening we celebrate our annual remembrance of the most important birthday in history. The baby born that fateful night in Bethlehem was none other than God’s own Son, and his life would reveal the depth of divine love: he would forgive sins, heal the sick, feed the hungry, and shine with light in a darkened world. In Christ, God understands the fullness of human existence, for he has walked among us and shared our joys and sorrows, starting from the moment Mary bore him into the world in the most meager of circumstances. As you depart this night, remember that the Creator of the cosmos has walked this same earth, so no matter what, every single step of your life is hallowed.

The sacrament of the Eucharist strengthens our relationship with Christ and offers us mystical nourishment for our lives as his disciples. All who are baptized by water and in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, regardless of age or denomination, are welcome to receive communion. When notified by the ushers, you may approach the altar rail and either kneel or stand. To receive the bread, extend your hands, one palm beneath the other. When offered the chalice, please help by guiding it to your lips. Indicate your desire to receive both bread and wine together by continuing to hold the host in your hand, and the Eucharistic Minister will dip it in the chalice and place it on your tongue. Indicate your desire to receive a gluten-free wafer by holding out your hands together palms-down. Those who do not desire to receive communion may instead receive a blessing, indicated by crossing your arms across your chest.

chRisTmas oFFeRiNgIn the spirit of Christmas, half of tonight’s loose-plate offering (donations not designated toward the fulfillment of a 2018 pledge) will be given away. The Vestry has designated two recipient organizations whose work reflects the themes of the Nativity. Your generosity will make a tremendous difference in the lives of the most vulnerable people in our world.

iNTeRNaTioNal Rescue commiTTeeJesus may have been born beneath a sky-filled with angels singing words of peace, but the Holy Family was soon forced to flee into exile to escape a despotic ruler. Christians can serve the Christ child today by responding to the suffering of migrant families like his, who have also had to flee their dangerous homelands. Part of the Christmas offering will go to support the work of the International Rescue Committee, which offers aid to refugees and migrants around the world, including those who have fled the Syrian Civil War, the persecuted Rohingya from Myanmar, and those who have fled Central American nations to seek safety here in our own country.

    ciTysquaRe

Our favorite carols make it sound romantic, but Mary and Joseph would have experienced enormous stress as they desperately sought safe housing in Bethlehem. Inspired by their plight and the circumstances of our Lord’s birth, we are called to serve the poor and homeless in our own community today. CitySquare fights the effects of poverty here in Dallas by creating pathways to sustainable housing and employment. In 2018, they became the largest provider of affordable housing in North Texas, with over 700 housing units. Part of the Christmas offering will go to support their important work, for when we serve the poor, we serve Christ, who for our sakes became poor (2 Cor. 8:9).

Please use the special Christmas envelope in the pewback to make your offering, and be sure to mark clearly if it is intended to fulfill a pledge. You may use a credit card to give, as well. Just text “Transfiguration” to 73256.

For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. The gRaDual Psalm 98 Ivor Algernon Atkins Sung by the Choir to Anglican Chant

Sing to the Lord a new song, * for he has done marvelous things.

With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory.

The Lord has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations.

He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.

Shout with joy to the Lord, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing.

Sing to the Lord with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song.

With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the Lord.

Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein.

Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the Lord, when he comes to judge the earth.

In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child

When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

  • Stand.The Postcommunion Prayer

    Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;

and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom.

And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

    The BlessiNg

May the Father, who has loved the eternal Son from before the foundation of the world, shed that love upon you his children. Amen.

May Christ, who by his Incarnation gathered into one things heavenly and earthly, fill you with joy and peace. Amen.

May the Holy Spirit, by whose overshadowing Mary became the God-bearer, give you grace to carry the good news of Christ. Amen.

And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen.
