A ToDos Nos eNCANTA lA NAviDAD. Aunque es

una antigua tradición, cada fin de año parece que

se renueva y nos renueva. Hay algo mágico en esta

época que cambia el tono de las conversaciones y

la luz de las miradas. la ciudad parece marchar a

otro ritmo, como si una sorpresa muy grata estuviera

esperando en cada esquina.

Alegría y devoción, fiesta y recogimiento.

Así es la Navidad en todas partes del mundo; como

en Medellín, una ciudad que desde hace muchos

años le pone un toque especial a esta temporada.

las calles se llenan de color, los edificios cambian su

adusta expresión por mensajes cálidos de felicidad

y esperanza, mientras en el aire flotan las viejas

canciones que avivan la memoria, la nostalgia y el

encuentro con los amigos y la familia.

A ePM le gusta estar en el centro de ese

espíritu navideño. Cada año hacemos “el alumbrado”,

toda una tradición urbana que siempre nos asombra

cuando recorremos lugares como la Avenida la

Playa, el Pueblito Paisa, la calle san Juan, los parques

centrales y barriales, el Jardín Botánico y el río

Medellín. es una fiesta iluminada.

Y junto a los millones de luces en parques y

avenidas, hay toda una actividad de responsabilidad

social y ambiental que nos permite entender el

Alumbrado Navideño de ePM como otra faceta de

nuestro compromiso empresarial con el desarrollo de

la comunidad.

este libro recoge las mejores imágenes de

esa Navidad de Medellín que está en el corazón de

todos nosotros. la gratitud y los buenos deseos que

tanto nos inspiran en esta época están expresados aquí,

para compartirlos con la gente que queremos y para

conservarlos por mucho tiempo en ese lugar, siempre

maravilloso, donde nos gusta guardar las mejores cosas

de nuestra vida.

everYoNe loves CHrisTMAs. even if it is an

old tradition, every December, it comes back to

renovate itself and to renew us. There is something

magical about this time that modifies the nature of

a conversation and the light inside a glance. The city

seems, somewhat, to be moving at a different pace, as

if a huge surprise were waiting at every corner.

Joy and devotion, feast and prayer. That

is what Christmas is all over the world; as it is in

Medellín, a city that has added a special something

to this season for a very long time now. The city

streets get filled with endless color, the buildings

leave behind their ever so rough expression to adjust

warm messages of hope and happiness, while in the

air, old songs bring back memories, nostalgia, and the

encounter with friends and family.

ePM loves to be in the middle of that

Christmas spirit. every year we make the lightings of

Medellín a reality, an urban tradition that is permanently

surprising us when we visit places such as la Avenida

la Playa, the Pueblito Paisa, la Calle san Juan, the main

parks and neighborhoods, the Botanical Garden and the

río Medellín. it is all a lit festivity.

Next to the millions of lights by parks

and avenues, there is a grand movement of social

and environmental responsibility that allows us to

comprehend the Christmas lighting of ePM as a new

phase of our corporate commitment towards the

development of the community.

This book gathers the best images of the

Christmas season at Medellín; a city that lives within

our hearts. The gratitude and the good wishes that so

inspire us during this season are expressed here, to

be shared with the people whom we love, and so to

be preserved for a very long time in this place, always

wondrous, where we love to keep the very best things

of our lives.

Historia de una

Tradición

es 7 De DiCieMBre eN lA NoCHe. la abuela ya tiene

lista la mezcla de leche, panela y harina dentro de

una paila de cobre, y utiliza el mecedor, que mueve

uniformemente en círculos para que no le salgan

grumos a la natilla. Mientras tanto, su nieto la ayuda

a hacer bolas de masa, que más tarde nadarán en

aceite caliente hasta convertirse en buñuelos, después

de tomar su color ladrillo y esa textura crujiente que

satisfará el paladar de familiares e invitados, quienes ya

se han aglomerado en la cocina a la espera de probar los

manjares navideños.

los niños en las calles encienden velas

y faroles en las fachadas de las casas, los andenes y

parques, en honor a la virgen María. Y a la sombra del

árbol de navidad comienzan a verse los primeros regalos,

que no se abrirán hasta el 25 de diciembre, a las 12 de

la madrugada. escenas como esas se repetirán a lo largo

del resto del mes, durante las novenas de aguinaldos,

y especialmente el 24 de diciembre, cuando en familia,

al son de música típica de diciembre, se espera el

nacimiento del Niño Dios, como los medellinenses

llaman al Divino Niño.

Aunque la Navidad es una celebración que

viene del viejo continente, en Colombia, y en particular

en Medellín, se han venido sumando una serie de

tradiciones locales, que la han convertido hoy en parte

integral de la idiosincrasia paisa.

“Los alumbrados” de MedellínDesde 1960, la capital antioqueña comenzó

a sumar a su tradición decembrina una decoración

luminosa, muy discreta en algunas zonas de la ciudad.

Más tarde, en 1967, empresas Públicas de Medellín,

ePM, desarrolló el proyecto de extender las luces a más

sectores de la ciudad, sobre todo en aquellos que tenían

atractivo turístico.

en la boca de los medellinenses, y más

adelante en el resto de colombianos, se empezó

a hablar de “los alumbrados”, y con el transcurrir

del tiempo, visitar los lugares decorados con

iluminaciones se convirtió en una tradición navideña

tan fuerte como lo es la natilla de panela y los

buñuelos, no solo para los antioqueños sino para

muchos turistas del resto del país y, hoy en día, de

muchas partes del mundo. esto debido a que las luces

decembrinas, década tras década, se han convertido

en una excusa para hacer más atractiva la arquitectura

de Medellín. esto acompañado de la calidez de sus

habitantes, se ha vuelto en un motivo adicional para

que mayor número de turistas pisen el suelo de la

“eterna primavera”.

Polvo de estrellasPareciera como si Medellín se preparara

todo el año para la llegada de diciembre, y ubicara

meticulosamente sus luces coloridas en cada rincón,

edificio, plaza o parque, y no simplemente bordeando las

ventanas o llenando de frutos brillantes los árboles, sino

creando formas de símbolos navideños y todo aquello

que la imaginación antioqueña pueda crear, como si no

solo decorara lo concreto, sino también el aire.

De esa forma, mallas y cascadas luminosas,

luces halógenas, proyectores y 15 millones de

bombillas se toman la ciudad de la noche a la

mañana, y dejan un rastro de estrellas desde el río

Medellín hasta el cerro Nutibara; desde el Teatro Pablo

Tobón Uribe hasta la plaza Botero, sin contar con

los habitantes, quienes también forran sus fachadas,

techos y ventanas con luciérnagas de colores. Todo

este conjunto crea “el alumbrado”, que para muchos es

el más bello que se pueda ver.

Por eso ahora, después de calmar su antojo

con la natilla de la abuela y el crujiente buñuelo

recién hecho, salen en familia los habitantes a recorrer

las calles, sin dejar de manifestar asombro ante los

trazos resplandecientes que cada año delinean a

Medellín, que también podría llamarse, por un mes, “la

ciudad luz”.

using the mixer in circles, just to ensure that there will

be no clots left in the custard, which is locally known as

natilla. Meanwhile, her grandson is helping her make

balls of dough, that later are meant to whirl in hot oil

until they become fritters, or buñuelos, as named by the

people from Medellín; of course, after turning a brick

color, delicious characteristic of the delicacy, and taking

that crispy texture that shall satisfy the sense of taste

of relatives and friends, for now they have all gathered

round the kitchen in the hopes of getting the very first

savor of the Christmas delicacies.

The children out in the streets light up

the candles and paper lanterns placed and hung

upon their porches, sidewalks, and parks in order to

honor the virgen Mary. And at the reflection of the

lights coming from the Christmas tree, the very first

presents begin to appear, which are not to be opened

until Christmas day, the 25th, at midnight. scenes,

very similar to these, can be found repetitively all

throughout the month, during the nine day prayer

rituals, and particularly on Christmas eve, the 24th,

when the family in a whole, to the compass of typical

season music, await the birth of the Child God, as the

locals call the Holy Child.

even if Christmas time is a holy festivity that

originally came from the old continent, in Colombia, and

predominantly in Medellín, a series of local customs have

become a component of the notion and understanding

of the paisas, local people from Medellín, in regards to

the celebration rituals of the season.

‘The Lightings’ of Medellínsince 1960, the capital of Antioquia began

to add to the already important celebrations of

December very prudent ornaments made of lights

in some specific parts of the city. later on, in 1967,

empresas Públicas de Medellín, ePM, the electric

company of the city, developed a project that would

encourage this ritual to take place in other parts of

the capital likewise, principally in those areas where a

touristic sway was held.

The lightings first became popular to the

people from Medellín, and later on to the rest of

Colombians; furthermore, as time was spent, visiting

the decorated places became yet another tradition

as strong as having custard made from panela and

the fritters, not only for the local people, but for many

other tourists from different parts of the country and,

nowadays, from other parts of the world as well. This

is due to the fact that The lightings at Christmas

time, decade after decade, have become the perfect

excuse to enhance the architecture of the city of

Medellín, which at the warmth of its inhabitants, has

become another reason to attract a higher number

of tourists who wish to step on the soil of the Eternal

City of Springtime.

And so it was that in 2008, meshes and lit

cascades, halogen lamps, spotlights and search lights,

and 15 million bulbs invaded the city from one day to

the next, thus leaving a trail of stars from the Medellín

river all the way to the peak of Nutibara; from the

Pablo Tobón Theatre to the Botero Plaza. This all, not

including the local homes and offices, which covered

their facades, rooftops, and windowsills with fireflies of

a million colors. This conjunction created The lightings

of Medellín which is, declared by many, the most

beautiful they have ever seen.

This is why after the craving for the custard

made by grandma and the crispy fritters out fresh

from the stove top, the entire family leaves the

house in order to transit on foot the city streets, with

obvious gestures of surprise before the brightness of

the traces of light that every year outline the city of

Medellín, that can very well be called for a month: The

City of light.

Novenade Aguinaldos

el PriMer PeseBre Del CUAl se TieNe MeMoriA fue

creado en el año 1224, por san Francisco de Asís, en Greccio,

un pequeño pueblo de Umbría. Pero es a fray Fernando de

Jesús larrea, un franciscano nacido en Quito, ecuador, en el

año 1700, a quien se debe la primera novena navideña que se

conoció en Colombia, por petición de doña María Clemencia

Gertrudis de Jesús Caycedo, fundadora del Colegio de la

enseñanza, en Bogotá.

Más adelante, en el siglo XiX, la madre María

ignacia, religiosa de la Compañía de María, cuyo nombre

era Bertilda samper Acosta, reformó la novena y compuso

los “gozos”. Desde entonces, la novena de aguinaldos, que

ha tenido una serie de modificaciones para hacerla más

entendible entre los creyentes, hace parte importante de la

cultura navideña en Colombia.

Benignísimo Dios, de infinita caridad, que tanto amasteis a los

hombres, que les disteis en vuestro Hijo la mejor prenda de vuestro

amor, para que hecho hombre en las entrañas de una virgen,

de todos los mortales, os doy infinitas gracias por tan soberano

beneficio. en retornos de él os ofrezco la pobreza, humildad y

demás virtudes de vuestro Hijo humanado, suplicándoos por

eN el PriNCiPio De los TieMPos el verbo reposaba en el seno

de su Padre en lo más alto de los cielos: allí era la causa, a la

par que el modelo de toda creación. en esas profundidades

de una incalculable eternidad permanecía el Niño de Belén

antes de que se dignara bajar a la Tierra y tomara visiblemente

posesión de la gruta de Belén. Allí es donde debemos buscar

sus principios, que jamás han comenzado; de allí debemos

datar la genealogía de lo eterno, que no tiene antepasados, y

contemplar la vida de complacencia infinita que allí llevaba.

la vida del verbo eterno en el seno de su Padre

era una vida maravillosa, y, sin embargo, ¡misterio sublime!,

Consideraciónpara el Día Primero

busca otra morada, una mansión creada. No era porque en su

mansión eterna faltase algo a su infinita felicidad sino porque

su misericordia infinita anhelaba la redención y la salvación del

género humano, que sin Él no podría verificarse.

el pecado de Adán había ofendido a un Dios, y esa

ofensa infinita no podría ser condonada sino por los méritos del

mismo Dios. la raza de Adán había desobedecido, y merecido

un castigo eterno; era pues necesario, para salvarla y satisfacer

su culpa, que Dios, sin dejar el cielo, tomase la forma del

hombre sobre la Tierra, y con la obediencia a los designios de

su Padre, expiase aquella desobediencia, ingratitud y rebeldía.

era necesario, en las miras de su amor, que tomase la forma,

las debilidades e ignorancia inconscientes de la infancia, para

expiar las debilidades e ignorancia sistemáticas del hombre;

que creciese, para darle crecimiento espiritual; que sufriese,

para enseñarle a morir a sus pasiones y a su orgullo, y por eso el

verbo eterno, ardiendo en deseos de salvar al hombre, resolvió

hacerse hombre también, y así redimir al culpable.

el verBo eTerNo se HAllA A PUNTo De ToMAr su

naturaleza creada en la santa casa de Nazaret, en donde

moraban María y José. Cuando la sombra del secreto divino

vino a deslizarse sobre ella, María estaba sola y ensimismada

en la oración. Pasaba las silenciosas horas de la noche en la

unión más estrecha con Dios, y mientras oraba, el verbo tomó

posesión de su morada creada.

sin embargo, no llegó inopinadamente; antes de

presentarse envió a un mensajero, que fue el Arcángel san Gabriel,

para pedir a María de parte de Dios su consentimiento para la

encarnación. el Creador no quiso efectuar este gran misterio sin la

aquiescencia de su criatura.

Aquel momento fue muy solemne. era

potestativo en María el rehusar... ¡Con qué adorables delicias,

con qué inefable complacencia aguardaría la santísima

Trinidad a que María abriese los labios y pronunciase: hágase

tu voluntad!, que debió ser suave melodía para sus oídos,

y con el cual se conformaba su profunda humildad a la

omnipotente voluntad divina!

la virgen inmaculada ha dado su asentimiento.

el Arcángel ha desaparecido. Dios se ha revestido de una

naturaleza creada; la voluntad eterna está cumplida y la

creación completa. en las regiones del mundo angélico estalla

el júbilo inmenso, pero la virgen María ni le oía ni le hubiese

prestado atención a él. Tenía inclinada la cabeza y su alma

estaba sumida en un silencio que se asemejaba al de Dios.

el verbo se había hecho carne, y aunque todavía

invisible para el mundo, habita ya entre los hombres, que

su inmenso amor había venido a rescatar. No era ya solo el

verbo eterno; era el Niño Jesús revestido de la apariencia

humana, y justificando ya el elogio que de Él han hecho

todas las generaciones en llamarle el más hermoso de los

hijos de los hombres.


Consideraciónpara el Día Segundo

Así HABíA CoMeNzADo sU viDA encarnada el Niño Jesús.

Consideremos el alma gloriosa y el santo cuerpo que había

tomado, adorándolos profundamente.

Admirando en primer lugar el alma de ese Divino

Niño, consideremos en ella la plenitud de su gracia santificadora;

la de su ciencia beatífica, por la cual desde el primer momento

de su vida vio la divina esencia más claramente que todos los

ángeles y leyó lo pasado y lo por venir con todos sus arcanos

conocimientos. No supo nunca por adquisición voluntaria nada

que no supiese por infusión desde el primer momento de su ser;

pero Él adoptó todas las enfermedades de nuestra naturaleza

a que dignamente podía someterse, aun cuando no fuesen

necesarias para la grande obra que debía cumplir. Pidámosle

que sus divinas facultades suplan la debilidad de las nuestras y

les den nueva energía; que su memoria nos enseñe a recordar

sus beneficios, su entendimiento a pensar en Él, su voluntad a no

hacer sino lo que Él quiere y en servicio suyo.

Del alma del Niño Jesús pasemos ahora a su

cuerpo, que era un mundo de maravillas, una obra maestra

de la mano de Dios. No era, como el nuestro, una traba para

el alma; era, por el contrario, un nuevo elemento de santidad.

Quiso que fuese pequeño y débil, como el de todos los niños, y

sujeto a todas las incomodidades de la infancia, para asemejarse

más a nosotros y participas de nuestras humillaciones. el

espíritu santo formó ese cuerpecillo divino con tal delicadeza y

tal capacidad de sentir, que pudiese sufrir hasta el exceso para

cumplir la grande obre de nuestra redención. la belleza de ese

cuerpo del Divino Niño fue superior a cuanto se ha imaginado

jamás, y la divina sangre que por sus venas empezó a circular

desde el momento de su encarnación es la que lavó todas las

manchas del mundo culpable.

Pidámosle que lave las nuestras en el sacramento

de la penitencia, para que el día de su dichosa Navidad nos

encuentre purificados, perdonados y dispuestos a recibirle con

amor y provecho espiritual.


Consideraciónpara el Día Tercero

DesDe el seNo De sU MADre comenzó el Niño Jesús a poner

en práctica su eterna sumisión a Dios, que continuó sin la

menor interrupción durante toda su vida. Adoraba a su eterno

Padre, le amaba, se sometía a su voluntad; aceptaba con

resignación el estado en que se hallaba, conociendo toda su

debilidad, toda su humillación, todas sus incomodidades.

¿Quién de nosotros quisiera retroceder a un

estado semejante con el pleno goce de la razón y de la

reflexión?, ¿quién pudiera sostener a sabiendas un martirio

tan prolongado, tan penoso de todas maneras? Por ahí entró

el Divino Niño en su dolorosa y humilde carrera; así empezó

a anonadarse delante de su Padre, a enseñarnos lo que Dios

merece por parte de su criatura, a expiar nuestro orgullo,

origen de todos nuestros pecados, y hacemos sentir toda la

criminalidad y desórdenes del orgullo.

Deseamos hacer una verdadera oración;

empecemos por formarnos de ella una exacta idea,

contemplando al Niño en el seno de su madre. el Divino Niño

ora y ora del modo más excelente. No habla, no medita ni se

deshace en tiernos afectos. su mismo estado, aceptado con la

intención de honrar a Dios, es su oración, y ese estado expresa

altamente todo lo que Dios merece y de qué modo quiere ser

adorado por nosotros.

Unámonos a las oraciones del Niño Dios en el

seno de María; unámonos al profundo abatimiento y sea

este el primer afecto de nuestro sacrificio a Dios. Démonos

a Dios, no para ser algo como lo pretende continuamente

nuestra vanidad, sino para ser nada, para quedar eternamente

consumidos y anonadados, para renunciar a la estimación

de nosotros mismos, a todo cuidado de nuestra grandeza

aunque sea espiritual, a todo movimiento de vanagloria.

Desaparezcamos a nuestros propios ojos y que Dios solo sea

todo para nosotros.


Consideraciónpara el Día Cuarto

YA HeMos visTo lA viDA que llevaba el Niño Jesús en el seno

de su purísima Madre; veamos hoy la vida que lleva también

María durante el mismo espacio de tiempo.

Necesidad hay de que nos detengamos en ella, si

queremos comprender, en cuanto es posible a nuestra limitada

capacidad, los sublimes misterios de la encarnación y el modo

como hemos de corresponder a ellos.

María no cesaba de aspirar por el momento en

que gozaría de esa visión beatífica terrestre: la faz de Dios

encarnado. estaba a punto de ver aquella faz humana que

debía iluminar el cielo durante toda la eternidad. iba a leer

el amor filial en aquellos mismos ojos cuyos rayos deberían

esparcir para siempre la felicidad en millones de elegidos. iba

a ver aquel rostro todos los días a todas horas, cada instante,

durante muchos años. iba a verle en la ignorancia aparente

de la infancia, en los encantos particulares de la juventud y

en la serenidad reflexiva de la edad madura... Haría todo lo

que quisiese de aquella faz divina; podría estrecharla contra

la suya con toda la libertad del amor materno; cubriría de

besos los labios que deberían pronunciar la sentencias a todos

los hombres: lo contemplaba a su gusto durante el sueño o

despierto, hasta que lo hubiese aprendido de memoria. ¡Cuán

ardientemente deseaba ese día!

¡Tal era la vida de expectativa de María! era inaudita

en sí misma, mas no por eso dejaba de ser el tipo magnífico de

toda vida cristiana. No nos contentemos con admirar a Jesús

residiendo en María, sino pensamos que en nosotros también

reside, por esencia, potencia y presencia.

sí Jesús nace continuamente en nosotros, por

las buenas obras que nos hace capaces de cumplir, y por

nuestra cooperación con la

gracia; por la manera del alma

que se halla en gracia es un

seno perpetuo de María, un

Belén interior sin fin. Después

de la comunión Jesús habita

en nosotros, durante algunos

instantes, real y sustancialmente

como Dios y como hombre,

porque el mismo niño que estaba

en María está también en el

Santísimo Sacramento. ¿Qué es

todo esto sino una participación

de la vida de María durante

esos maravillosos meses, y una

expectativa tan llena de delicias

como la suya?

Jesús HABíA siDo CoNCeBiDo eN NAzAreT, domicilio de

José y María, y allí era de creerse que había de nacer, según

todas las probabilidades. Mas Dios lo tenía dispuesto de

otra manera, y los profetas habían anunciado que el Mesías

nacería en Belén de Judá, ciudad de David. Para que se

cumpliese esta predicción, Dios se sirvió de un medio que

no parecía tener ninguna relación con este objeto, a saber:

la orden dada por el emperador Augusto, de que todos los

súbditos del imperio romano se empadronasen en el lugar de

donde eran originarios.

María y José, como descendientes que eran de

David, estaban obligados a ir a Belén.

Ni la situación de la virgen santísima, ni la

necesidad en que estaba José, del trabajo diario que les

aseguraba la subsistencia, pudo eximirles de este largo y

penoso viaje, en la estación más rigurosa e incómoda del año.

No ignoraba Jesús en qué lugar debía nacer, y así

inspira a sus padres que se entreguen a la Providencia, y que

de esta manera concurran inconscientemente a la ejecución

de sus designios. Almas interiores, observad este manejo del

Divino Niño, porque es el más importante de la vida espiritual:

aprended que quien se haya entregado a Dios, ya no ha de

pertenecerse a sí mismo, ni ha de querer en cada instante

sino lo que Dios quiera para él; siguiéndole ciegamente aun

en las cosas exteriores, tales como el cambio de lugar donde

quiera que le plazca conducirle. ocasión tendréis de observar

esta dependencia y fidelidad inviolable en toda la vida de

Jesucristo, y este es el punto sobre el cual se han esmerado

en imitarle los santos y las almas verdaderamente interiores,

renunciando absolutamente a su propia voluntad.


Consideraciónpara el Día Sexto

iMAGiNeMos el viAJe De MAríA Y JosÉ hacia Belén, llevando

consigo, aún no nacido, al Creador del universo, hecho

hombre. Contemplemos la humildad y la obediencia de ese

Divino Niño, que aunque de raza judía y habiendo amado

durante siglos a su pueblo con una predilección inexplicable,

obedece así a un príncipe extranjero, que forma el censo de

población de su provincia, como si hubiese para Él en esa

circunstancia algo que le halagase, y quisiera apresurarse

a aprovechar la ocasión de hacerse empadronar oficial y

auténticamente como súbdito en el momento en que venía

al mundo. ¿No es extraño que la humillación, que causa tan

invencible repugnancia a la criatura, parezca ser la única cosa

creada que tenga atractivos para el Creador? ¿No nos enseñará

la humildad de Jesús a amar esa hermosa virtud?

¡Ah! Que llegue el momento en que aparezca

el deseado de las naciones, porque todo clama por ese

feliz acontecimiento. el mundo sumido en la oscuridad, y el

malestar buscando y no encontrando el alivio de sus males,

suspira por su libertador.

el anhelo de José, la expectativa de María, son

cosas que no puede expresar el lenguaje humano. el Padre

eterno se halla, si nos es lícito emplear esta expresión,

adorablemente impaciente por dar a su Hijo único al mundo, y

verle ocupar su puesto entre las criaturas visibles.

el espíritu santo arde en deseos de presentar a

la luz del día esa santa humanidad bella, que el mismo ha

formado con tan especial y divino esmero. en cuando al Divino

Niño, objeto de tantos anhelos, recordemos que hacia nosotros

avanza, lo mismo que hacia Belén, Apresuremos con nuestro

deseo el momento de su llegada; purifiquemos nuestras

almas para que sean su mística morada, y nuestros corazones

para que sean su mansión terrenal; que nuestros actos de

mortificación y desprendimiento “preparen los caminos del

señor y hagan rectos sus senderos”.

lleGAN A BelÉN JosÉ Y MAríA, buscando hospedaje en los

mesones; pero no lo encuentran ya, por hallarse todo ocupado,

ya porque se les desechase a causa de su pobreza. empero, nadie

puede turbar la paz interior de los que están fijos en Dios. si José

experimentaba tristeza, cuando era rechazado de casa en casa,

porque pensaba en María y en el Niño, sonreíase también con

tanta tranquilidad cuando fijaba su mirada en su casta esposa.

el niño aún no nacido regocijábase de aquellas

negativas, que eran el preludio de sus humillaciones venideras.

Cada voz áspera, el ruido de cada puerta que se cerraba ante

ellos era una dulce melodía para sus oídos. eso era lo que

había venido a buscar. el deseo de esas humillaciones era lo

que había contribuido a hacerle tomar forma humana.

¡oh, Divino Niño de Belén!, estos días que tantos han

pasado en fiestas y diversiones o descansando muellemente en

cómodas y ricas mansiones, han sido para vuestros padres un

día de fatiga y vejaciones de toda clase. ¡Ay!, el espíritu de Belén

es el de un mundo que ha olvidado a Dios. ¡Cuántas veces no ha

sido también el nuestro! ¿No cerramos continuamente con ruda

ignorancia la puerta a los llamamientos de Dios, que nos solicita a

convertirnos, o a santificarnos o a conformarnos con su voluntad?

¿No hacemos mal uso de nuestras penas, desconociendo su

carácter celestial, con que cada uno a su modo lo lleva grabado

en si? Dios viene a nosotros muchas veces en la vida, pero no

conocemos su faz: no lo reconocemos hasta que nos vuelve la

espalda y se aleja después de nuestra negativa.

se pone el sol del 24 de diciembre detrás de los

tejados de Belén, y sus últimos rayos doran las cimas de las

rocas escarpadas que lo rodean. Hombres groseros codean

rudamente al señor en las calles de aquella aldea oriental,

y cierran sus puertas al ver a su madre, la bóveda de los

cielos aparece purpurina por encima de aquellas colinas

frecuentadas por los pastores. las estrellas van apareciendo

una tras otra. Algunas horas más y aparecerá el verbo eterno.

lA NoCHe HA CerrADo Del ToDo eN lAs CAMPiñAs De

BelÉN. Desechados por los hombres y viéndose sin abrigo,

María y José han salido de la inhospitalaria población y se

han refugiado en una gruta que se encontraba al pie de la

colina. seguía a la reina de los ángeles el jumento que le

había servido de cabalgadura durante el viaje, y en aquella

cueva hallaron un manso buey, dejado ahí probablemente

por alguno de los caminantes que habían ido a buscar

hospedaje en la ciudad.

el Divino Niño, desconocido por sus criaturas

racionales va a tener que acudir a las irracionales para

que calienten con su tibio aliento la atmósfera helada de

esa noche de invierno, y le manifiesten con esto y con

su humilde actitud el respeto y adoración que le había

negado Belén. la rojiza linterna que José tiene en la mano

ilumina tenuemente ese pobrísimo recinto, ese pesebre

lleno de paja, que es figura profética de las maravillas del

altar y de la íntima y prodigiosa unión eucarística que Jesús

ha de contraer con los hombres. María está en oración en

medio de la gruta, y así van pasando silenciosamente las

horas de esa noche llena de misterios. Pero ha llegado la

medianoche, y de repente vemos dentro de ese pesebre,

poco antes vacío, al Divino Niño esperado, vaticinado,

deseado durante cuatro mil años con tan inefable anhelo. A

sus pies se postra su santísima Madre, en los transportes de

una adoración de la cual nada puede dar idea. José también

se le acerca y le rinde el homenaje con que inaugura su

misterioso e imponderable oficio de padre putativo del

redentor de los hombres.

la multitud de ángeles que descienden del cielo

a contemplar esa maravilla sin par, dejan estallar su alegría y

hacen vibrar en los aires las armonías de ese Gloria in excelsis,

que es el eco de adoración que se produce en torno al

trono del Altísimo, hecha perceptible por un instante a los

oídos de la pobre tierra. Convocados por ellos, vienen en

tropel los pastores de la comarca a adorar al “recién nacido”

y a presentarle sus humildes ofrendas.

Ya brilla en oriente la misteriosa estrella de

Jacob, y ya se pone en marcha hacia Belén la caravana

espléndida de los reyes Magos, que dentro de pocos días

vendrán a depositar a los pies del Divino Niño el oro, el

incienso y la mirra, que son símbolos de la caridad, de la

oración y de la mortificación.

¡oh, adorable Niño!, nosotros también, los

que hemos hecho esta novena, para prepararnos

el día de vuestra Navidad, queremos ofreceros

nuestra pobre adoración: ¡no la rechacéis! venid a

nuestras almas, venid a nuestros corazones llenos

de amor. encended en ellos la devoción a vuestra

santa infancia, no intermitente y solo circunscrita al

tiempo de vuestra Navidad, sino siempre y en todos

los tiempos; devoción que fielmente practicada y

celosamente propagada, nos conduzca a la vida

eterna, librándonos del pecado y sembrando en

THe verY FirsT NATiviTY CriB THAT THere is reCorD of was

created in the year 1224, by saint Francis of Asissi, from the order

of Friars Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscans, at

Greccio, a small town by the Umbría. But it was Brother Fernando

de Jesús larrea, born in Quito, ecuador, in the year 1700, to

whom it is attributed to have created the first Nine Day Prayer

before Christmas season that was acknowledged by Colombia;

this by petition of Doña María Clemencia Gertrudis de Jesús

Caycedo, who was the founder of the Church of The enseñanza,

in Bogotá, capital of the country.

later, in the XiX century, Mother María ignacia, a

member of the religious order from the Company of Mary our

lady, whose real name was Bertilda samper Acosta, reformed

the Nine Day Prayer before Christmas season, and composed

what is known today to be the verses, the spanish word for

it is gozos. since then, the Nine Day Prayer before Christmas

season has had a series of modifications in order to make it

much closer to the people and much more understandable to

the followers, for it makes an important part of the rituals for

the Holy season in Colombia.

Mighty God of infinite charity, You, whom has loved mankind,

You, who has given your son as a token of Your love so that once

made flesh, within the womb of a virgin, He may be born within a

crib for our health and remedy; i, in the name of all mortals, i give

AT THe BeGiNNiNG oF All TiMes, the verb rested upon the

lap of His Father in the highest point in Heaven: it was there

that the cause began, as began the model for every creation.

in the depths of the immeasurable eternity, the Child from

Bethlehem remained before He decided to descend to earth

and take visible possession of the cave of Bethlehem. There,

we must trace the genealogical data of the eternal, who has

got no ancestry, and who contemplated life from the infinite

complacency that he there had.

The life of the eternal verb in the lap of His Father

was a wondrous one, and yet, sublime mystery, seeks for a

new home in a created mansion. it was not due to the lack of

anything in His eternal mansion filled with joy, but because His

enduring charity wanted for the redemption and salvation of

the human race, which without Him could never be fulfilled.

The sin committed by Adam had offended a God, and that

undying offense could not be absolved but for the merits of

the same God. The race of Adam had disobeyed and deserved

an eternal punishment; it was so required, in order to liberate it,

and satisfy its guilt, that God, without leaving Heaven, took the

body of mankind on earth, and obeying the desires of His Father

from Heaven, clean such disobedience, ingratitude, and sense

of rebellion. it was required in the means of His love, that He

took human shape, the limitations, and systematic ignorance of

mankind, that He grow so that He could receive spiritual growth

as well; that He suffered so that his passions would die off, and

His pride, and that is the reason why the eternal verb flaming

in desire to save the human race decided to become man and

then redeem the guilty.

THe eTerNAl verB is ABoUT To TAKe its nature created in the

Holy House of Nazareth, where Mary and Joseph once lived.

When the shadow of the Divine secret drew closer, gliding

unto Her, Mary was alone and enclosed in prayer. she spent

silent hours of the night in an ever closer union with God, and

while praying alone, the verb took possession in the newly

created home.

Nonetheless, His arrival was not unexpected;

before He presented Himself, He sent a messenger; it was

Gabriel, Archangel, who pleaded to Mary, on behalf of

God, Her consent for incarnation. The Creator did not wish

to conclude this great mystery without prior approval from

His creature.

That memento was extremely solemn; it was in

Mary to refuse… With what sweet joy, with what ineffable

indulgence would The sacred Trinity await for Mary to open

Consideration for the Second Day

Her lips and would pronounce the words which must have

been melodies to its ears, and which could confirm Her

undying humbleness to the omnipotent Divine will!

The immaculate virgin Mary has given Her

approval. The Archangel has vanished. God has covered

Himself in humanly nature; the eternal Will has been

fulfilled and Creation has been accomplished. in the

regions of the angelic world immense joy bursts, yet the

virgin Mary could not hear such celebrations, nor would

she have paid much attention to them. Her head leaning,

her soul deep into the stillness; the silence which is similar

to the silence of God.

The verb has become flesh, and even if He is still

invisible to the world, He lives within mankind, whose immense

love He has come to rescue. He was not solely an eternal verb,

He was the Child Jesus covered in human nature, and justifying

every compliment that about Him, every generation has made

in calling Him the most beautiful of all men.


AND iN THis WAY, His life had begun as the incarnation of Child

Jesus. We shall consider now the glorious soul and the Holy

body He has taken, in profound adoration of them both.

in the first instance, in adulation of the Divine

Child, we shall consider the fullness of its prudish soul; for

which, ever since the very first moment of His life, He was

able to see the Divine essence clearer than any other angel,

and He read the past, and He read the future along with

all mysteries and understanding contained in them both.

His knowledge, He did not acquire through any means,

knowledge was ever within Him by means of infusion. Yet,

He took in all illnesses of our human nature to which He, in a

dignifying manner, could endure; even when this was utterly

unnecessary for the Great Plan that He was to achieve. let us

beseech that His Divine abilities abide by our limited ones,

thus providing our limited skill with renewed energies; we

beseech that His remembrance teach us to bear in mind His

every offering, we beseech that His understanding allow us

to think about Him, we beseech that His Will show us to be

nothing other than that which He desires us to be, thus we

remain in the purpose of serving Him.

From the soul of the Child Jesus, we transit to

His body, which was a world of wonders, an art work of the

hand of God. it was not at all similar to our own, a burden to

our soul; it was, on the contrary, a new element of sanctity.

He wanted His body to be small and frail, just as all other

children’s bodies are, and subject to all discomforts apposite

to childhood, in order to be closer to us in nature, and to be

a part of all embarrassment relevant to our lives. The Holy

spirit shaped that tiny Divine body with such gracefulness

and such sensitivity, that only He could bear the excess of

it all in order to comply with the Great Plan of the manly

redemption. The beauty of the body of Divine Child was

ever so superior to anything imagined before Him, and the

Divine blood that through His veins began to run from the

very moment of His embodiment, is the same blood that

cleansed away all tainted deed and deliberation of this

world of guilt.

let us plead to cleanse away our own guilt in the

sacrament of Penitence, so that the joyous day of Christmas,

we may encounter ourselves purified, forgiven, and apt to take

Him in with much love and spiritual awareness.

eveN FroM THe WoMB oF His MoTHer, the Holy Child showed

His submission before God; which unrelenting, remained to be

uninterruptedly for the rest of His life. He adored His eternal Father,

He loved Him, He followed His Will; He accepted with resignation

all His weakness, all humiliation which was placed upon Him, He

admitted all discomforts in the same manner.

Who, of all humans, would ever fancy of belittling

himself to a state of existence in absolute awareness and

complete notion? Who could ever endure, in total preparedness,

such sustained hardships, so arduous in every possible manner?

And this is how the Divine Child encountered His distressing yet

humble passage through life; this is the way He began to perceive

Himself astounded by the greatness of His Father, to lecture us

to that which is what God deserves on behalf of His creatures, to

expiate our conceit, fountain of all our sins, and to make us aware

of all misdemeanors and disorders that emerge from pride.

Consideration for the Fourth Day

We then wish to make our prayer true; we might want

to envision a precise image of us in worship of the Divine Child

being observed by His Mother. The Divine Child prays and pleads

in the upmost exceptional way. He does not speak of anything, He

does not ponder, nor does He melt amidst gentle cuddling. His

own state of being, accepted with the sole intention to worship

God, is His prayer, and this state decidedly expresses all that God is

worthy of, and the way in which He wishes to be adored by us.

let us join in to the prayers of the Divine Child inside

the Mother’s womb; let us join the deep breakdown of human

race, and may this be the first token of sacrifice to God. Not in

the hopes of becoming something, as pursued continuously

by our vanity, but to be nothing, to be unendingly consumed

and bewildered, to renounce to the motivation that comes

from within; in the hopes of finding the way to mind our own

greatness, even that vastness that is entirely spiritual; to all

movement of conceit. let us vanish before our own eyes, and

may God alone be everything to us.

We HAve seeN THe liFe that the Child Jesus led in the womb

of His Holy Mother; let us see today the life that Mary led

during the same span of time.

it is requisite that we make a halt before Her, if we

do wish to comprehend, within the boundaries of our own

limited capabilities, the sublime mysteries of incarnation, and

the way that we may suffice to them.

Mary could not help the yearning for that

moment when she would rejoice of the very vision of

the beatified Child in earthly existence, the face of the

personified God. she was soon to see that face made

human that must have illuminated the Heavens for all

eternity and ever after. she was soon to read the filial love

in the same eyes in which the rays ought to have spread

happiness and joy forever amongst millions of chosen

ones. she would see Him in the apparent ignorance of

childhood, amidst the common enchantment of youth,

and in the reflexive serenity of adulthood. she would do

everything that she ever dreamt of with that Divine face;

she could press it against Her own face, enjoying all liberty

of a motherly love; she would cover with kisses the very lips

that would one day pronounce the sentence of all men and

women on earth: she would contemplate to Her content

while He would be asleep, or while He would be awake,

until she had memorized Him entirely. How profusely she

wanted that day to come!

The life of expectation of Mary was such! Her life

was unprecedented in itself, yet this was no reason for Her to

lead a magnificent Christian life. We cannot merely be content

at admiring Jesus living within the womb of his Mother Mary,

we must also think that He is alive inside of us by means of

pure essence, power, and presence.

Jesus is permanently born within us, by all

benevolent acts that He encourages us to realize, and by

way of our own collaboration with grace. The way that

our soul can remain in grace is through the thought of

an eternal womb of Mother Mary, and an abiding interior

Bethlehem. Moreover, after Communion, Jesus resides

within us for some instants, essentially as man and God

at the same time; it is possible because the same Child,

who was inside Mary’s womb, is now present through

the Holy sacrament of Communion. And what is all this

but a participation of the life that Mary led during those

wonderful months, and an expectation so full of bliss like

Hers was?


JesUs HAD BeeN CoNCeiveD iN NAzAreTH, home to

Joseph and Mary, and it was there where Mary had

been believed to give birth, which was agreeable to all

possibilities. Yet God had other plans, and the prophets

had indeed announced that the Messiah would be born

in Bethlehem of Judah, the city of David. in order for this

prediction to be completed, God, by means that apparently

had no connection with this subject matter, indeed was

presented at the time being: The emperor, Augustus, had

given word that all citizens from the roman empire were to

register in the very place where they were all from.

Mary and Joseph, as they were both descendants

of David, were then bound to travel to Bethlehem. Nor the

gestation of the Holy virgin nor the times of trial for daily

work in which Joseph found Himself which would assure

them survival means, nor any other circumstance was

reason for them to be exempt from making the lengthy

and troublesome journey during the most rigorous and

uncomfortable season of the year.

Jesus did not ignore the exact place where

He ought to be born, thus inspiring His parents to give

in to the Divine Providence in an act of faith, and that

in this manner contribute to the happening of His Will.

souls within, observe this behavior of the Divine Child, for

it is yet the most important of a life of spirituality: learn

now that that who has given himself to God is no longer

to himself nor will he want differently that which God

wants for him: thus following His Will unquestionably

even in external matters like a change of place where

His Will shall take him. There will come a time to observe

this dependency and unbreakable loyalty that Jesus

practiced during the whole of His life, many true saints

and souls have tried to imitate Him with earnest attempt,

relinquishing the whole of their own wills.


leT Us iMAGiNe THe JoUrNeY oF MArY AND JosePH towards

the city of Bethlehem, taking with Them the unborn creator of the

universe, made flesh. let us ponder upon the humbleness and

obedience that the Divine Child held, for He who had become of

Jewish descent, and having loved His people of israel for centuries

in an inexplicable fondness, obeys a foreign prince who has ordered

the census of His province, as if there could possibly be something

in this circumstance that would flatter Him in any given way, and

that perhaps, He would want to hasten in order to be registered

officially and authentically as a citizen at the very moment in which

He would come into this world. is it not bizarre that the humiliation,

that can cause such insurmountable repugnance to the creature,

would seem to be the only thing that could have shown to be

attractive in some way to the Creator? Would it not be possible that

this humbleness of Jesus would show us to love this virtue?

Ah! let the time be when The Wanted one for all

nations will in fact appear, for each and every one wants this

joyous moment to come; the world, plunged in darkness and

distress in the search to alleviate it all, and not being able to

find any assistance, heaves a sigh for the liberator to arrive.

While Joseph yearned, Mary had the highest

expectations, yet there are no human words to describe the

way they both felt. The eternal Father is, if it is proper to use

this term, endearingly eager to give His only son to the world,

and to see Him occupy His place amongst visible creatures.

The Holy spirit blazes in desire to present to the

daylight this human divinity, which He Himself has formed

with heavenly endeavor. in regards to the Divine Child, let

us bear in mind that the same comes towards us, as goes

towards Bethlehem. let us surge, then with our own desire

the moment of His arrival; let us purify our souls so that they

may become his mystic home, and our hearts so that they may

become His earthly Manis; let our acts of mortification and our

open-handedness “prepare the ways for the lord, and make

the paths straight for Him.”


JosePH AND MArY Arrive iN BeTHleHeM, hoping to find shelter

at the local guesthouses; nevertheless they stumble upon none for

these places have been filled with other citizens who had already

arrived for the census, or simply because they were rejected due to

their extreme dearth. However this may frustrate the interior peace

of those who remain in God. if Joseph felt deeply surprised when

He was rejected house after house because He was thinking about

Mary and the Child, He also produced a smile with the same peace

as soon as He laid eyes upon His chaste wife.

The Child, who has not yet arrived to this world,

would rejoice Himself before all rejection which would prove

to be the prelude to greater humiliations to come. every harsh

voice, every door closed before Them, was precisely what He

had come to seek for. it was the desire for these rejections that

had caused His incarnation to begin with.

oh, Divine Child from Bethlehem! These days

that many have spent in parties and celebrations, or resting

comfortably in their rich and comfortable homes, have been

days of fatigue and humiliation of all types. Ah! The spirit of

Bethlehem is the same spirit of a world that has forgotten

about God. How many times has this not been the same for

us? Have we not closed the door with absurd ignorance the

calls from God, who solicits our commitment, or sanctifying

acts, or accept His Will? Do we not make ill use of our sorrows,

ignoring its heavenly nature with which we are all born with?

God comes to us many times during our lives, yet we know not

His face nor do we recognize Him until He turns away after we

reject Him. The sun of Christmas day is gone, hidden behind

the rooftops of Bethlehem, and its last rays turn the tops of

sharp edged rocks that surround the city, a golden color.

spiteful men hit the lord in the streets of the Middle eastern

town, and close their doors when they perceive the presence

of Mary, the sky shows itself to be purplish over the hills so

often visited by shepherds. The stars appear one after the

other. some hours later, and the eternal verb shall appear.


THe NiGHT HAs UTTerlY CloseD iN AT THe CoUNTrYsiDe

oF BeTHleHeM. Having been rejected by the local men,

and acknowledging the fact that They have no protection,

Mary and Joseph have left the not hospitable town only

to find a grotto close to the hill, where They could shelter.

Close behind, following The Queen of Angels, was the

donkey that had served as cavalry during the journey, and

it was inside that grotto that they found an ox that was

there, left behind by some traveler who had gone to seek

accommodation at the city.

The Divine Child, unknown by His creatures, will

be forced to appeal to the beasts and other animals inside

the grotto, so that they could bring some warm breath

into the cold atmosphere of that winter night, and raise

the temperature of the place, thus revealing their humble

attitude, respect, and adoration that Bethlehem had deprived

lighted shyly the underprivileged setting, that nativity crib

made of hay, which is the prophetic figure of the wonders of

the altar, and the intimate and prodigious eucharist that Jesus

was to share with men ever after. Mary is in veneration in the

middle of the grotto, and so the silent hours are spent in that

night of mysteries. But midnight has alas come; suddenly,

inside the crib, shortly before empty, we may see the Divine

Child so wanted, so venerated, foreshadowed for over four

thousand years with such indisputable hope. To His feet, His

Holy Mother, in the midst of the upmost reverence, one that

no other can offer idea about, sits. Joseph has also come

closer to the crib and offers His respect, act which would

mark the initial reverence to the mystery of being foster father

to the savior of humankind.

The multitude of angels, that come down from the

Heavens to contemplate the wonders without equal, releases

in ecstasy the infinite joy, and makes the air quiver with celestial

musical chords of Gloria in excelsis, which is the eco of adoration

produced around the throne of God, made evident to the ears,

for only an instant, in an act of generosity to the unfortunate

world. summoned by Them, come in multitudes, the local

shepherds of the region so to adore the newborn, and to render

the most humble tributes.

in the east, the star of Jacob begins to shine; and

the grand procession of the three wise men began towards

Bethlehem, which a few days later shall come to pose to the

feet of the Divine Child the gold, the incense, and the myrrh,

which are the symbols of charity, of prayer, and of torment.

oh, Divine Child! We too, the ones who have done this nine

day prayer for Christmas, in order to prepare ourselves for our

season, wish to offer our humble adoration; reject it not: come

to our souls, come to our hearts plenty of love for You.

lighten in us the worship for Your blessed

childhood, not intermittent or bound to the season of Your

nativity alone, but that this worship remain always and at every

moment of our lives; devotion that has been so dutifully and

carefully spread and that can guide us to eternal life, spearing

us from sin, and planting seeds of Christian virtues within us.


El tiempo de los NiñosTime of the Children

el 7 de diciembre los niños encienden faroles y velitas,

no sin antes desear uno que otro juguete y el bienestar

de sus familiares. Tal cual como estos infantes, en el

barrio las Palmas.

On the 7th of December, children light lanterns and

candles, not without wishing for some toy, and the

wellbeing of their families. Just as these children do

in the neighborhood Las Palmas.

candelillas, en los barrios las Palmas, laureles, la Milagrosa,

A local resident of Antioquia cannot avoid noticing the great

amount of people trying to make a living at the expense of

selling and buying markets, or ‘el rebusque’, as it is known in

Colombia. What better moment than Christmas, to make a

good bargain.

City Lights

Nadie conoce mejor que los artesanos el oficio de “tejer” la Navidad. Es un trabajo intenso pero

gratificante que les exige paciencia, aplicación y mucha recursividad.

No one knows better than the artisans the job of “weaving” christmas. It’s an intense though

rewarding work, that demands patience, dedication and a lot of creativity.

Desde un rincón del taller, dedicada a ponerle manguera luminosa a una gran valla de

Navidad, la artesana cuenta que desde hace diez años se dedica a este trabajo. “Ya hasta soy

capaz de hacerlo con los ojos cerrados”, dice entre risas.

At a corner of her atelier, the artisan puts on the light hose to a big christmas wall, and tells us she’s

been doing this for almost ten years: “I can do it with my eyes closed”, she says, laughing.
