NEWSLETTER Monday, 17 March, 2014 Welcome to Week 8, Term 1

“RETURN OF THE BULLY” INCURSION On Monday 3 March all students had the opportunity to attend an entertaining and light-hearted performance educating all students about a very serious topic – bullying. Some tips the students were asked to think about (here are the secrets):

You can’t beat a bully by being a bully.

    Bullies want a reaction.

Bullies like to feel tall by making you feel small. All students learnt strategies, through watching the performance, on how to overcome a ‘mean’ situation and how to empower themselves. The strategies we were taught are:

    1. Stand Tall – be strong and confident. 2. Don’t React – remain calm and ignore. 3. Don’t Argue, Just Agree – sometimes not fighting

back is hard! 4. Don’t Throw Stones – it’s nice to be nice. 5. Block Their Path – tell them ‘I know what you’re

going to say’ – take the discussion away from the bully.

    6. Journal – Start taking notes. Who? What? Where? When? Why?

If we aim to follow the above strategies, then Epping Public School will continue to be a happy and safe place for us to all learn and play harmoniously.

    FROM THE PRINCIPAL

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS This year parents will need to go online to

book a parent teacher interview. A note is

being sent home today outlining the

procedure. Please read the note. If you have

any problems contact the school office. The

online booking site will open tomorrow

afternoon, Tuesday 18 March and close

Wednesday afternoon 26 March at 3pm.

CANTEEN CO-ORDINATOR Over the last four years some of the money

raised from the canteen has been directed

back into the purchase of literacy resources

for the students. As recent as last meeting

$1000 was granted to our literacy co-

ordinator Mrs Bailey to ensure our students

have both a quality and quantity of

resources. The canteen also supplies healthy

lunches, drinks and snacks for students to

help the busy parent or sometimes just as a

treat. I know the children enjoy our canteen.

For the last 3 years Mrs Bailey has

coordinated the canteen and last year when

no one would take it on she continued. This

year she again continued this term, but

enough is enough. Mrs Bailey has done more

than her fair share and it is time for someone

else or maybe a group of helpers to take

over. If no one offers the canteen will be

closed. Please we need your help, the

students don’t want their canteen closed.

See in the P&C section how you can help.

STUDENT REPRENSTATIVE COUNCIL AND GREEN TEAM BADGES The members of the Green Team and SRC

will be presented with their badges at this

Wednesday’s Assembly. Listed below are the

names of those student members. They will

hold their position for Semester 1.

ZONE CARNIVAL Twenty one students along with Miss McGill

and Mrs Buttrey attended the Zone

Swimming Carnival last Monday. Once again

our students performed with distinction both

in and out of the pool. I would like to thank

our students, the teachers and the parents

who helped with transport or came along to

cheer. However it would be remiss of me not

to mention the performance of Bella. Her

    achievements are listed below:

  • Opportunities for All

First 8 yrs. girls 50m freestyle (new zone

    record);

    First junior girls 50m breaststroke;

    First junior girls 50m butterfly;

    Second junior girls 50m backstroke;

    Second girls 200m medley.

In the junior events Bella was competing

against girls 2 years older. Bella finished

junior girl champion for the meet, a

    wonderful effort.

HARMONY DAY Each year our school celebrates Harmony

Day where we remind ourselves about the

    importance of cooperation, tolerance,

    understanding and getting along. Harmony

Day is always 21 March, which this year is a

Friday. As we have sport commitments on

the Friday we will be celebrating Harmony

day the following week on Wed 26 March.

ART ENRICHMENT In 2013 we organised an Art Enrichment

Program for Stages 1, 2 and 3. The product of

their program was to be hung in the hall. The

Stage 1 masks and the stage 2 nature trail

have been there since the beginning of term.

We have finally been able to hang the stage 3

Aboriginal Perspective School Map. It looks

great and everyone, when at school, should

take the opportunity to see it.

EARLY ARRIVERS Once again I need to remind students and

parents that supervision of the school

    playground does not commence until

8:50am. Therefore no student should be at

school before this time. Please support us in

    this matter.

    Mr John Ford

ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL On Monday 10 March, 21 students

represented Epping PS at the Beecroft Zone

P.S.S.A Swimming Carnival at Sydney Olympic

Park Aquatic Centre. All the children swam to

the best of their ability and were a credit to

themselves. They should be very proud of the

way they represented their school and their

    sportsmanship on the day. Special

congratulations must go to Bella Zhang who

received Junior Girls Age Champion. She also

broke the 8 year girl 50m Freestyle record with a

time of 36.59 seconds. Bella will be going on to

the Area Carnival on 25 March in 5 events.

    Mrs Buttrey & Miss McGill

MULTICULTURAL PERSPECTIVES PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION SPEAK OFF. Over the last few weeks students in years 3-6 have been presenting speeches in class based on the topic of Multiculturalism. Each class

The Speak Off will be adjudicated by Principal Mr Ford. Parents of the speakers are welcome to attend. From these events two students from Stage 2 and two students from Stage 3 will be selected to represent Epping PS at the local finals of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition to be held in June.

CHESS Are you interested in Chess? Chess club has started up for 2014 and is now being held in the 2D classroom at lunch time on Tuesdays. Come along for a friendly game, improve your moves and learn about upcoming chess events.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL Classes in years 2 – 6 have held elections to select Student Representatives for Semester 1 of 2014. These students will receive their badges at this week’s assembly. Congratulations to all of the students for being selected to represent the student body. Their names are listed in this newsletter.

    HARMONY DAY - “EVERYONE BELONGS”

We will celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday 26th March. Harmony Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate what makes each Australian unique and share what we have in common. It provides an opportunity for all Australians to:

    Say “no” to racism;

Celebrate our many successes as a diverse and harmonious multicultural society; and

Re-commit to our common values of respect and goodwill towards our fellow Australians of all backgrounds.

All students are invited to wear a national costume, a community sport or organisation uniform, your favourite sporting team’s colours or something orange on Wednesday 26th March to show support for the values of Harmony Day. Two special “Harmony Day” Awards will be given in each class this week at Wednesday’s assembly to students who demonstrate respect and goodwill. We are asking students to show their goodwill to others by donating a can of food (with a ring-pull tab if possible) to the Exodus Foundation. The Exodus Foundation is a charity which distributes food parcels to needy families. We are especially requesting donations of tinned fish, meat, vegetables

  • Opportunities for All

and fruit as these foods can form the basis of a sound family meal. Please join in, celebrate and have fun on Wednesday 26th March. TOGETHER, WE ‘CAN’ MAKE A DIFFERENCE ON HARMONY DAY. Mrs A Rowsell and J-L Citer ESL Teachers

    FETE 2014!

Another amazing fun-filled Fete is planned for this year! We hope the support and wonderful community spirit that was on show during Fete 2012 will continue. Many coordinators and volunteers will be needed

to ensure another successful Fete. Watch this space...

KEEP OUR CANTEEN OPEN - CANTEEN CO-ORDINATOR URGENTLY REQUIRED. The Canteen is an important resource to the

school community, providing a network for

parents to be involved and meet other

parents whilst engaging with students and

providing lunches to a large number of EPS

students on a weekly basis. The canteen also

provides resources that are used at various

functions. On a financial note, the

contribution of time by parents allows our

canteen to put money back into the school

    facilities, with $10,000 recently donated

    towards the play equipment.

We are urgently seeking a parent or

community member to volunteer for the role

of Canteen Co-ordinator. This role can be

shared by a couple of people (week on/ week

off or Wed/Fri) if you do not wish to take on

the role solo. Thank you to Janice, who has

kindly offered to take over the rostering role

at the end of Term 1. Rostering will not,

therefore, be a part of the new co-ordinators

    role.

The recent survey indicated a high

proportion of families would support online

ordering in both the uniform shop and

canteen. There is a cost of $ and time to

install this facility and though it would be a

fantastic resource and for canteen would

streamline the 8.45-9.30 workload P&C is

reluctant to support this process whilst we

do not have a volunteer to take over the

Canteen co-ordination. If a volunteer cannot

be found then P&C will look to shut the

canteen as early as the end of this term.

  • Opportunities for All

Please consider if this is something you may

be able to contribute back into the school,

you will have a fantastic group of parents

working with you and an even bigger group

of students very happy to still have a

    canteen.

    Please contact Sue

    [email protected] if you would

like to commit to this role or if you have any

questions regarding this role. Thank you.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE Calling all Class Parents! Would you like to be a

Class Parent? This is an easy job and can the role

can be shared. A lot of it can be done at home

after hours. We already have many volunteers.
