FROM THE PRINCIPAL

FETE DRIVE We are now within mid-term 2 and our Fete is on the horizon. This week we are commencing the first of our fete drives. During this time we ask our families and friends to donate specific items for our fete. These are used in different ways to help our fete and the organisers. Details with regard to items for this drive can be found in our newsletter. I encourage you to support our fete in any way you can. All money raised is used to support our students. The focus of the fete’s fundraising is to develop aspects of our playground and purchase technology resources to support our students in the classroom. Please help!

ICAS The first of our ICAS exams, Science, commences this week. Details about the organisation have been sent home. If you have not received the information please contact Mr Le at school. All parents need to be aware that if students do not arrive in time to complete the exam there will not be another time allotted to do it. They will miss out.

SCHOOL FEE PAYMENTS Our school, along with other local schools, is about to undertake the biggest change in the Department’s Financial Systems. Payments to the school have now closed until the new financial system switches over in mid June. Please note: Payments to the P&C for Movie Night, Canteen, Band and Uniform Shop etc. can still be made.

WWCC AND TUTORS Please refer to the article elsewhere in the newsletter requesting those parents who use out of school hours tutors to ensure they have a Working with Children Number. It is the responsibility of the parents to check this.

AFTER SCHOOL PLAY EQUIPMENT With regard to using after school equipment I remind parents about the following requirements: 1. Every child must be directly supervised by a parent. This means the parent must be close and watching them. 2. The equipment can only be used until 4pm. After this time it becomes the use for EBASCA. 3. Students must follow the school rules when using the equipment.

ANIMALS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY I remind the school community, animals even pets on leashes, are not allowed on school property whilst students are on the grounds. (This of course excludes guide dogs). I look forward to your support in this matter.

Mr John Ford Principal

YEAR 6 DEBATING On Wednesday the 25th of May, Isabella Denniss, Rajan Ravinthran, Oskar Ten Dam and Patrick Xu from the Year Six Debating Team travelled to Hunters Hill Public School to compete in their first debate of the year. The topic was that "There should be separate schools for smarter students" and we were the negative team. After an hour of tough preparation they had a very challenging debate and walked away the winners. Well done team Ms Kerr.

LIBRARY UPDATE

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE Last week during Library lessons I revised with the children how to access the Premier’s Reading Challenge website and how to record books read for it. If any parent or student is having trouble with the User Name and Password just call into the Library before school or immediately after school and I will help you out. The closing date for the Challenge is 19 August so there is still plenty of time to take part in it. Thank you to all those students who have given me a hard copy of the completed reading log. This is the only way you can take part in our PRC Class Challenge and gain 1000 House points. The points will be calculated after the closing date.

CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK SHORTLIST On Friday 20 May the Shortlist for Children’s Book Week was released. I am in the process of ordering the shortlisted books for lessons in Term 3. Our school’s Book Week celebrations have been postponed till September because we have big plans for the 2016 Olympic Games in August. More news to come later. Mrs Lyn Campbell Teacher-Librarian

PEER SUPPORT This week in the Peer Support session, children will be focusing on the importance of support networks and the role that friends play in each others lives. Children will construct a visual representation of this during the session. Encourage your child to identify friends they have who can provide support to them if the need arises.

CHOOSE WATER AS A DRINK

Did you Know?

Soft drinks, cordials, sports drinks and flavoured mineral waters often have large amounts of sugar and kilojoules. In fact, a can of soft drink contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar.

Drinking too many sweetened drinks can cause a range of problems including tooth decay, poor appetite, picky eating, change in bowel habits and putting on excess weight. These drinks should only be consumed occasionally – not every day.

Ideas to help you to drink more water

*Pack a water bottle whenever you go out

*In summer, pack a frozen water bottle in your child’s lunch box

*Don’t keep sweetened drinks at home; make cold water available instead

*Water down sweetened drinks – such as cordials or fruit juice – for a short time and then start to replace them with plain water

*When playing sport, encourage kids to drink water rather than sports drinks or energy drinks

*Serve plain water in decorative jugs. Add slices of lemon, orange or mint for flavour and, in summer, add ice cubes to keep it chilled

*Serve sweetened drinks in smaller glasses and only have them occasionally – not every day

Remember:

*Choose water as a drink and eat fruit

*Sweetened drinks such as soft drinks, fruit juice drinks, cordials, sports and energy drinks are not a necessary part of a healthy diet

* *If sweetened drinks are on the menu, try not to include them every day and choose healthier options, such as watered-down versions of favourite drinks. *These will still quench your thirst, but without the excess sugar and kilojoules. It can also help reduce the preference for strongly sweetened drinks.

Message to Tutors and Coaches

Tutors and coaches can help to keep kids safe From 1st April 2016 all tutors and coaches who provide services to children are being phased-in to the new Working With Children Check online system in NSW. Tutors and coaches working in schools and other organisations, including those previously checked by employers under the old system, will need to apply for a new Working With Children Check. The Certificate for Self Employed People from the old Working With Children Check will no longer be valid after their expiry date. Tutors and coaches providing private services to children will also need to apply for a new Working With Children Check. The tutor or coach should provide their name, date of birth and WWCC number to parents/carers for online verification. Applications for a Working With Children Check can be made at www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/check The Office of the Children’s Guardian has produced a poster for private tutors and coaches to display their name, date of birth and WWCC number. The downloadable poster and parent verification process are at www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/parentscheckthecheck A WWCC clearance means the tutor or coach can work with children in NSW. A WWCC bar or interim bar means the tutor or coach cannot work or volunteer with children in NSW. If you suspect that an adult is providing services to children without a Working With Children Check you can make a confidential report online or phone (02) 9286 7219. Help keep kids safe by sharing #parentscheckthecheck with your colleagues, family and friends through your own social media networks. SMS message (where email not provided) From 1st April 2016 all tutors and coaches who provide services to children in NSW will need to get a new Working With Children Check to be verified @ #parentscheckthecheck. To apply go to www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/check
