FROM THE PRINCIPAL

PERFORMANCE PROTOCOLS Everyone is getting excited about our upcoming school performance of a ‘Swinging Summertime’. To ensure everyone’s enjoyment of the performance we have put a number of protocols into place. There will be a separate yellow note sent home outlining these protocols. We ask that you read and respect these requests. There are still tickets left for the afternoon performance. We look forward to seeing you there.

GOOD LUCK STUDENTS This week we have students competing at the Zone Athletics and the ‘Battle of the Dances’. I would like to wish both groups the best of luck. I hope the students thank their teachers, who have put in a lot of time and effort to provide these opportunities for our students. Mrs Buttrey and Miss McGill are leading our dance troupes and have been working with them since the beginning of the year.

RESPECT Last week some toddlers were climbing over our Memorial Wall and walking through the garden. The wall and garden have been erected in memory of soldiers who have given their lives during war time. It is a solemn and respectful part of our playground. Parents coming into the school with their toddlers need to be mindful of this.

LOST PROPERTY I have recently had a couple of requests from parents about lost property. They feel that their child’s clothing may have been taken home by mistake. I ask if all parents could do a couple of things. 1. Check that jackets, jumpers and hats are their child’s and have not been taken home by mistake.

2. Label all of your child’s belongings so if they do end up in lost property they can be returned to the owner. 3. Please do not take things that do not belong to you out of the lost property basket. Mr John Ford Principal

ENGAGING LEARNING THROUGH QUALITY TEACHING - STRATEGIC DIRECTION 2 We have been hard at work striving to achieve our milestones over the past term:

Curriculum Implementation

Literature Units are continually being designed by each stage for the rest of the year. Units from last year are also being evaluated for improvements. On our Staff Development Day, staff members were given opportunities to assess the positive and negative aspects of the implementation of the new National Curriculum for English, Mathematics and Science. Physical Education Physical Education has continued to be a major focus for our committee. We received a grant of $2700 through the Australian Sports Commission Sporting Schools Program which has been designated towards Stage 2 and 3 students participating in a 4 week Rugby League clinic. We also successfully received a grant through the Live Life Well program which will enable us to purchase more sporting resources for the school. The Premier's Sporting Challenge has come to a close and all students have been actively involved in building their minutes of physical activity per week. We will receive an additional grant since this is our inaugural year in the program. The new fitness equipment has been installed with the help from our P&C. Staff

spent Sunday 9 August learning how to use each piece of equipment safely and effectively during fitness lessons. Some stages have already started to implement its use during fitness time. Staff have also begun a weekly Pilates session to promote a healthy work-life balance and mental wellbeing.

Accreditation of Staff During a recent Professional Learning meeting, staff were introduced to the new accreditation procedures which are currently being implemented. The Accreditation Mentor program has continued where teachers support each other through this detailed process. Meetings are being held every 5 weeks to ensure all teachers are on track with their goals. We look forward to continuing to work towards achieving our milestones for the benefit of our students and staff. Strategic Direction 2 Committee.

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK 2015 is the United Nations declared International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. It is a world-wide celebration of the importance of light and optical technologies to the development of society. Light is everywhere and is fundamental to our existence. Light enables us to enjoy a rainbow, scan our purchases at the supermarket, conduct research, take photos and x-rays, study the cosmos and read a book at night – just to mention a few. On Thursday, our students celebrated the International Year of Light by looking at how light affects us through experiments and displays. Here are some comments from our students about our celebration: “On Thursday, 20 August, Miss Graham organised a science fair for the school. There were lots of different experiments. My favourite was one where you put 2 wires on metal which made a light bulb light up. Thank you Miss Graham for organising the science fair! “ – Christopher 4M “Science week was great. I saw some amazing stuff there. I saw rainbow glasses and electric stuff and light that goes round and round” – Vipra 1T “It was fantastic!” – Isabell 1T Miss Graham

LIBRARY NEWS Children’s Book Week

This week is the 70th anniversary of Children’s Book Week in Australia. The 2015

theme is ‘Books Light Up Our World’, tying in with the United Nations’ International Year of Light and Light-based

Technologies. Today the children participated in a musical performance called Shine a Light based around some of this year’s shortlisted books. It was pleasing to note the number of children who recognised the titles used in the performance that had been studied in library lessons this year. Old Videos and Their Plastic Cases

In the library you may have noticed lots of yellow signs dividing up different sections of the Non-Fiction area. These are old videos in their plastic cases that I reuse to direct children to topics - things like Dinosaurs, Sharks, Cooking, etc. If you have any old videos in their cases at home that you no longer need, could you send them to me in the library so I can use them on the shelves? I usually leave the old video inside to reinforce the case. I then remove the old label and slide in a yellow sheet of paper into the plastic sleeve advertising the topics. If you are replacing any old videos, I would love to help you dispose of your “junk”. Who said that old videos were now superceded by DVDs or hard drives? Most school library budgets are limited, understandably, and we have to look at alternate ways of using funds to solve problems. This is one way of being resourceful. Thank you for helping out.

Mrs Lyn Campbell. Teacher-Librarian

The children really appreciate being able to buy a cool drink or ice block, especially as the weather heats up. If we are unable to recruit enough volunteers, the canteen won’t be able to open on Mondays. We are also looking for more volunteers in general. If you are able to help, we'd love to hear from you soon as our team is in the process of putting together the Term 4 canteen roster.
