“Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord?”

Over the last few years, within our denomination, there has been something of an obsession with statistics. Now, to be clear,

Methodists have always had a preference for numbers. Ask any United Methodist clergy about Tables I, II and III, and you’ll get a laugh and a look of resignation. Each year we turn in membership numbers and demographics, Sunday School attendance, budgets, UMW statistics, UMMen information, giving, capital campaigns, and other numbers, enough to answer about 85 questions for every congregation.

In the last several years, however, we have started focusing on different numbers. Instead of measuring a church’s vitality by total number of members and size of budget, our Annual Conference has started tracking just a few numbers. For each week, we are asked to report our average attendance, baptisms and professions of faith, and new groups started.

Those who study the health of churches have seen a definite trend in the life-cycle of congregations. When churches are no longer willing to start new groups, whether for music, for study, or simply for Christian conversation, it becomes easy for those congregations to stagnate.

If a community of Christians is unable to inspire parents to bring their children for baptism, or unable to lead people into confessing their faith openly, they have lost something essential to what it means to be the Church.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it many times in the future. I enjoy the Confirmation process. Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t times I’d chuck the entire group of 7th and 8th graders out the window (they are Junior High kids, after all). But, usually after their most annoying and giggly moments, they will answer a question about faith with the most profound and meaningful statement of belief. This is one of the reasons I’ve started to share videos of their answers as a part of the Confirmation Service itself. You need to see just what excellent young Christians are becoming a part of our vital congregation.

This Sunday, we will be celebrating the professions of faith of five new Professing Members of our congregation. Koye Grebel, Braeden Olauson, Marty Rohrbeck, Tessa Williams, and Camille Zachrison will make their vows of membership, and begin the lifelong journey of Christian faith. Their statements of faith are not just a personal achievement, but the sign of a healthy and vibrant church. Thanks be to God.

In Christ,

Volunteer, Share, Enjoy! All are Welcome!

serving group.

Your serving group provides the fellowship of Sunday mornings and the comforting presence that all need following a funeral

service. These are important ministries that we provide for one another within the community of believers. It is a way to reach out to those who have not found that gift of the Holy Spirit as being real in their own lives.

Please take seriously your assignment to one of the serving groups. If the month is not a fit for you, please contact VirLyn Hoff, Carol Peterson, or leave a note in the office with Anita.

First, THANKS to all who have contributed. The new financing consists of two separate loans, one using the church as collateral and the other using the Trustee’s CD as collateral. Having two separate loan balances achieves the most favorable combination of interest rate and monthly payment amount. Therefore, the new monthly payment amount is one fixed at $1,983.46 and the other, interest only, totaling just under $3,000 a month for the life of the loan. We will continue to pay ahead as far as possible to keep the actual due date as far out as possible and, ultimately, pay down the loan faster to minimize interest. Please keep debt-reduction in mind as you consider your financial gifts to the church. All of your gifts are greatly appreciated. —Wayne Winkler

Please Note: You may still return your pledge card for the Glory of God’s House Capital Campaign! We sent out around 200 cards and have received a surprisingly small number back. Even if you are continuing with prior commitments, it is nice to have confirmation.

Christian Education, Dawn Thomsen, Director Happy May everyone! Our year is winding down. A huge “THANK YOU!” to all my volunteers who helped make this another fun year of Sunday School! I couldn’t do it without you! May is busy with Confirmation, Graduation and all the other end of the year stuff. Our last day of Sunday School will be May 19 with our Graduate & Leader Recognition. If you’re like me, though, you look at the summer & it is just as busy, just a different busy!

Here is a look at what we have to look forward to:

Camp Season is Coming!

We had fun celebrating camping on Camp Sunday, on 4/28 & enjoyed fellowship with our meal afterwards. We hope everyone enjoyed it & will check out all that camping has to offer our families!

Here are a few things to remember for camp registration:

Register at www.dakcamps.org & enter: 332301CA for the financial code.

With the code, your payment should come up as half of the cost of the camp as our United Methodist Men and Women cover the other half of the cost for our campers. A huge “Thank You” to those groups for supporting this ministry!!

The Early Bird deadline was April 30th, but you can still register.

If the cost is a problem, please let us know. Scholarships are available.

Confirmation Sunday

Koye Grebel, Braeden Olauson, Marty Rohrbeck, Tessa Williams, & Camille Zachrison will be getting confirmed as members of Epworth on Sunday, May 5th. This is an exciting day for them & the church! Blessings to them!

Mother’s Day

The kids in preschool through 6th grade will be singing a preview of our VBS songs on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12th during the 10:30 AM worship service.

Senior Recognition Sunday

We will be recognizing our graduating seniors Sunday, May 19th at the 10:30 am worship service. The graduates that we are aware of are: Braylen Bruns and Breyer Harvey from Valley City High School, Annabeth Lint from Barnes County North High School, Jon and Callie Krabbenhoft from VCSU, & Gabby Cummings from UND. We need information and photos from our graduates by May 13th to include in the bulletin insert! Please let me know if I am missing anyone!

Vacation Bible School!

The countdown is on for our “To Mars and Beyond” VBS 2019! I still need a few areas covered and will be ordering materials. We will have our final planning meeting on Wed., May 8th at 5:30. Please come if you are able so we can make sure we have everything set. Please let me know where you would like to help out to make this the most fun & successful VBS yet! The registration is now live on our website: http://epworthvalleycity.com/vbs-registration.

Everyone is welcome at Sunday School each week! It is always fun to see the halls busy with the kids & adults here to learn about our faith.

God’s peace and love,

Hello Everyone, We just had an amazing Good Friday Service led by your fine youth. The youth worked hard and enjoyed doing the service. They wanted to keep it more traditional. They did a great job! Thank you to all who made it and we missed you to those who could not be there. We had five youth there for the service but that is less than half of our active group. We have also talked about feeling that make us happy and sad. What makes us feel these ways and how do we act when we are sad or upset? We talked about how it is ok to be mad and upset, Jesus was mad quite a few times as well. We talked about how the actions we take when we are upset show a side of us we often do not show. What can we do to help us not act out while we are upset? The week before the Good Friday service we talked about Jesus and what actually happened to him during Holy Week, who he talked to and what happened to him. It was a good conversation and they asked a lot of deep questions. The youth have started selling “Shares” in our Mission Trip. The Shares are a way for you to support the youth group and go on the YOUTH ’19 trip and see what we are doing. The Shares are $25 each. What do you get from a Share? You get: the Share itself; you are added to a group where you can see the youth post and tell about what they are doing while in Kansas City; you also are invited to a Thank You Dinner where the youth tell personal experiences from the trip and serve the dinner to you. Please contact a youth to get your Share. We have also started bringing paperwork back for the YOUTH ’19 trip this summer. The next big event is YOUTH 2019!! This event is a mission/service trip in Kansas City. This is happening July 7th through the 14th in 2019.

God’s Peace,

Rydel

There are great things happening at Epworth United Methodist Church. Serving on the finance committee in my eyes means we need to keep you abreast of where the finances of the church are.

Our YTD giving stands at $51,061 through the end of March. This stands at 78% of budget and is $14,273 short of budgeted income. YTD date our budget has been behind by approximately $1,000/week.

Another way to look at how our giving can get back on pace is as follows:

2 Givers increase of $500 per week

10 Givers increase of $100 per week

40 Givers increase of $25 per week

100 Givers increase by $10 per week

Current Givers – Increase weekly gift by 27%

On the expense side, three months into our year we are 25% through the year. Total expenses through March stand at 26%. This says to me that expense management is maintaining budget. There are some budget areas that are over. Most of these are a result of seasonal changes or using volume buying that meets needs for longer than the budget period.

The ministries at Epworth are doing great things. The use of our facility is allowing us to reach out to many within our community. With this comes the need to make sure the basics are covered. The lights, the heat, the cooling, as well as staff support, are all met by your giving. Stay tuned for a basic nuts and bolts campaign.

We remain open to your questions and concerns. Please contact any of the finance committee if you have a question.

“Open Table” Served on the last Tuesday of every month, this ministry is something to look forward to for many in our community. Planning meetings are

held on a Sunday after worship and dates are listed on the calendar and in the bulletin. All are welcome to attend and help!
