PREFACE
The raising use of metals, being accompanied with industrial development in
our country, brings about economic loss as well as extravagance of resources
and of materials, which cannot be recycled due to lack of prevention of
corrosion. The rate of corrosion loss, being one of the most important causes
of extravagance, increases sharply. In our country, surrounded by sea from
three directions, mostly marine metal structures are not protected sufficiently.
Since necessary precautions are not taken, every year huge corrosion losses
take place.
The large parts of pipelines, that contain such liquids as petroleum, water,
natural gas either are protected or controlled insufficiently. Besides due to
lack of coordination with different constituents, separated activities cause
underground network to be all mixed up like spider’s web. The presence of
protected and unprotected systems in the same area result in a complex form
so new systems serve as an anode of former systems.
One of the must significant reasons why our company is established is to
initiate the inevitable activities that enable to prevent corrosion failure
effectively and thus contribute to country’s economics. Doing scientific
research, benefiting from universities to determine the most appropriate and
affective means of protection system to prevent metallic corrosion, and to
acquaint scientific knowledge to domestic industries is the main goal of our
company.
It is believed that introducing our catalogue prepared for above mentioned
goals will assist in preventing corrosion.
Regards,

FUNDAMENTALS AND PREVENTION OF METALLIC CORROSION
Corrosion is defined as a gradual wearing away or alteration by chemical or
electrochemical oxidizing process. Since the process of corrosion returns metal to its
original conditions, we must consider the action degeneration in its true primary
form.
Ordinarily, iron and steel corrode in the presence of both oxygen and water. Rapid
corrosion may take place in water; the rate of corrosion is accelerated by the velocity
or the acidity of the water, by the motion of the metal, by an increase in temperature
of aeration, by the presence of certain bacteria, and by other less prevalent factors.
On the other hand, corrosion is generally retarded by protective layers (or films)
consisting of corrosion products or absorbed oxygen; high alkalinity of the water also
retards the rate of corrosion on steel surfaces.
For instance, corrosion of steel does not occur in dry air as is negligible when the
relative humidity of the air is below %30 at normal or lower temperature. Prevention
of corrosion by dehumidification is based on this fact.
All structural metal corrode to some extent in natural environments. Bronze, brasses,
stainless steels, zinc, and aluminum corrode so slowly under the service condition in
which they are placed that they are expected to survive for long periods without
protection. Corrosion of structural grades of iron and steel, however, proceeds
rapidly unless the metal is amply protected. This susceptibility to corrosion of iron
and steel is of great concern because, owing to favorable cost and physical prepay
considerations, vast quantities are used. Annual losses due to corrosion of steel
have been variously estimated at
Nearly $70 billion in the United States. It is apparent that protection against
corrosion of iron and steel is an indispensable phase of sound engineering.

MECHANISM OF CORROSION Corrosion in metals, whether in the atmosphere, underwater, or underground, is caused by a flow of electricity from one metal to another metal or recipient of some kind; or from one part of the surface of one piece of metal to another part of the same metal where conditions permit the flow of electricity. Types of corrosion commonly identified on metal Uniform Electrochemical Galvanic Concentration cell Corrosion fatigue Intergranuler Erosion corrosion Stress corrosion ELECTROCHEMICAL CORROSION The cell in Figure 1. Illustrates that corrosion process in its simplest form. This cell includes the following essential components. Figure .1: Simple cell showing components necessary for corrosion If the cells as shown were constructed and allowed to function, an electrical current
would flow through the metallic conductor and the electrolyte. The anode would
corrode (rust, if the anode were iron); chemically, this is an oxidation reaction.

Simultaneously, a nondestructive chemical reaction (reduction) would proceed at the
cathode, producing hydrogen gas on the cathode in most cases
However, oxygen or some other depolarizing agent is usually present to react with
the hydrogen, reducing this effect, so the cell would continue to function. If the
metallic conductor were replaced with a voltmeter, a difference of potential could be
measured between the electrodes.
The difference in potential that causes this electric current is due mainly to contact
between dissimilar metallic conductors or differences in concentration of the
solution, mainly with respect to dissolved oxygen in natural waters. Almost any lack
of homogeneity on the metal surface or the in its environment may initiate attack by
causing differential in potentials that results in more or less localization of corrosion.
Many other facts are involved, but these include most of the important fact known
about ordinary corrosion and are all satisfactorily explained by application of
electrochemical principles, the metal undergoing electrochemical corrosion need not
be immersed in a solution, but may be in contact with moist soil, or patches of the
metal surface may be moist.
Technical definition of electrolyte
An electrolyte is a solution containing ions, which are particles bearing an electric
charge. Ions are present in solutions of acids, alkalis, and salts.
It is well known that the formation of rust by electrochemical reactions may be
expressed as follows:
1. 4Fe Ý 4Fe2+ + 8e-
4Fe + 3O2+2H2O Ý2Fe2O3.H2O (hydrated red iron rust)
2. 4Fe + 2O2+4H2O Ý4Fe(OH)2 (red iron rust with water).
4Fe(OH)2+O2 Ý2Fe2O3.H2O +4H2O (hydrated red iron rust)
According to a number of investigations, the most stable form of rust is Fe2O3. At
higher temperatures (900 to 1300oF) Fe2O3, revert, Fe3O4

GALVANIC CORROSION
Better known as simply dissimilar metal corrosion, this form of degeneration pops up
in the most unusual paces and often causes the most painful professional
headaches.
The Galvanic Series of Metals guide details how the galvanic current will flow
between two metals and which will corrode when they are in contact or near each
other in the ground.
The driving force (difference of potential) available to promote the electrochemical
corrosion reaction of reflected by the galvanic series. This is a list of a number of
common metals and alloys arranged according to their tendency to corrode
galvanically. Metals grouped together do not have a strong effect on each other, and
the farther apart any two metals appear, the stronger the corroding effect on the one
higher in the list. It is possible for certain metals to reverse their positions in some
environment, but the list as given will hold generally in natural waters and
atmosphere (The galvanic series should not be confused will the similar
electromotive force series, which shows exact potentials based on highly
standardized conditions that rarely exist in nature. Which metal will become anode
and which other become cathode due to galvanic effect is relevant to the electrode
potential of the metals in the solution.
Electrode potential of a metal changes with respect to sort of ion in and
concentration of solution. For this reason electrode potential of same metals are
different in different solutions.

measured in soil. Otherwise it is possible to get a false value due to ohmic

Differences in soil conditions, such as moisture content and resistivity, commonly are
responsible for creating Anodic and cathodic areas. Where there is a difference in
the concentration of oxygen in the water or in moist soils in contact with metal at
different areas, cathodes will develop at points of relatively high oxygen
concentrations and anodes at points of low concentrations. Strained portions of
metals reportedly tend to be Anodic and unstirred portions cathodic. Thus, under all
ordinary circumstances where iron and steel are exposed to natural environments,
the basic conditions essential to corrosion are present to a greater or less degree.

Thus Anodic and cathodic areas will develop, and a corrosion cell, called a

Pitting deserved special mention because it is the type of local call corrosion that is
predominantly responsible for the functional failure of iron and steel hydraulic
structures. Pitting may result in the perforation of water pipe, rendering it
unserviceable, even though less than %5 of the total metal has been lost through
rusting. Even where confinement of water is not a factor, pitting will cause structural
failure from localized weakening effect while there is still considerable sound metal
remaining.
Pitting develops when the Anodic (corroding) area is small in relation to the cathodic
(protected) area. For example, it can be expected where large areas of the surface
are generally covered by mill scale, applied coatings, or deposits of various kinds,
but breaks exist in the continuity of the protective materials. Pitting may also develop
on bare, clean metal surfaces because of irregularities in the physical or chemical
structure of the metal. Localized, dissimilar soil conditions at the surface of steel can
also create conditions that promote the pitting type of corrosions

On surface containing mill scale, the total metal loss is nearly constant as the anode
area is decreased, but the degree of penetration increases. Figure 2 shows
diagrammatically how a pit forms where a break occurs in mill scale. When contact
between dissimilar materials is unavoidable and the surface is painted, it is important
to paint both materials-especially the cathode. If the anode only is coated, any weak
points such as pinholes at holidays in the coating will probably result in intense
pitting.
Severe corrosion, leading to pitting, is often caused by concentration cells;
particularly in cases in which differences in dissolved oxygen concentration occur.
When a part of the metal is in contact with water relatively low in dissolved oxygen, it
is Anodic to adjoining areas in contact with water in dissolved oxygen. This lack of
oxygen may be caused by exhaustion of dissolved oxygen in a crevice (See Fig-4)
the low-oxygen area is always Anodic. Figure-4 illustrates another type of
concentration cell; this cell at the mouth of crevice is due to a difference in
concentration of the metal in solution. These two effects sometimes blend together
as in a reentrant angle in a riveted seam.

THE CORROSION OF STEEL IN CONCRETE Concrete is one of the most important construction materials. It is also a compact
material against external effects physically and chemically. In order to improve the
strength of concrete, steel rods are used in construction. However construction rods
made of soft steel. This steel can be corroded in atmosphere and in water easily.
This is because of high alkalinity of concrete. But the oxygen cannot permeate
through the concrete block by ease.
Concrete, originally, consists of agrega, segment and water. The main binding
chemical reaction takes place between water and clinker compounds of segment.
Clinker compounds form calcium silicate hydrates and calcium aluminates hydrides
by reacting with water. These hydride compounds become compact in time being
crystallized.
While clinker compounds are reacting with water, calcium hydroxide is formed by
hydrolyze of silicate. This hydroxide, which has a strong basic characteristic,
remains at solution-phase after concrete becomes compact. As a result of this pH
degree of fresh concrete, with the effect of alkali oxides in clinker compounds,
increases to 12,5 like lime solution. As concrete becomes older in time pH
decreases as a result of permeation of atmospheric carbon dioxide through concrete
body. However even in old concrete pH degree is not too low.
The high degree of concrete pH causes ℘Fe2O3 film formation on the surfaces of
steel and passivation of metal in the concrete in a short time. In an ordinary concrete
this oxide film prevents corrosion of steel without failure for along time.
Many concrete structures in industrial environments with the external effects (sea
water, some salts used to prevent ice formation, fertile wastes, etc.) becomes ugly**
The chloride ions, present in concrete construction, causes deformation of passive
** Chlorine can permeate through the concrete to structure by means at same concrete ingredient used for accelerating of concreting

oxide film formation on the steel surfaces. In these conditions construction rods can
be corroded severely. It is appropriate condition the presence of chloride over 0,7-
1,2 Kg in unit volume (1 m3) for the remain of corrosion.
The result of corrosion in concrete is not only the loss of steel but also cracking and
the concrete blocks because the volume of the chemical compounds (rust), which
appears on steel rods, is greater respectively.
There is no an effective mean to repair the old concrete blocks due to corrosion.
However, However if it is not cracked by corrosion yet, these repair methods are
recommended as follows:
The upper plate of the concrete above rods is removed and rods are substituted by
new ones then it is reconcreted.
The upper plate of the concrete above rods is removed and then it is recovered by
concrete asphalt or epoxy concrete.
If physical properties of the structure is appropriate and if in 1m3 of concrete 1,2 Kg
chloride are present then a new 7,5 cm-thick concrete plate should be put on the top
without removing rods and concrete.
It may be possible to keep the structure erect for a certain period of time with one of
these methods. Nevertheless here the goal is to protect the structure, not to repair it
before corrosion effect.
In order to prevent corrosion:
Appropriate design
Appropriate material selection
Sufficient coating
Cathodic Protection
Anodic protection

should be provided. The items except for cathodic protection are ones that decrease
corrosion rate in other words prevent partially. Cathodic Protection is rather effective,
protective entire method.
CATHODIC PROTECTION Cathodic Protection is a major factor in corrosion control of metals. When an
external electric current is applied, the corrosion rate can be reduced to practically
zero. Under these conditions the metal can remain in a corrosive environment
indefinitely without deterioration.
In practice, cathodic protection can be utilized with such metals as steel, copper,
brass, lead, and aluminum against corrosion in all soils and almost all aqueous
media. Although it cannot be used above the waterline (since theme impressed
electric current cannot reach areas out of the electrolyte) it can be effectively used to
eliminate corrosion fatigue, intergranuler corrosion, stress corrosion cracking,
dezincification of brass, or pitting of stainless steels in sea water or steel in soil.
In 1982, Sir Humphrey Davy, reported that by coupling iron or zinc to copper, the
copper could be protected against corrosion. The British admiralty had blocks of
attached to the hulls of copper sheathed vessels to provide cathodic protection.
Unfortunately, cathodically protected copper is subject to fouling by marine life,
which reduced the speed of vessels under sail and forced the admiralty to
discontinue the practice. However, the corrosion rate of the copper had been
appreciably reduced. Unprotected copper supplies are sufficient number of copper
ions to poison fouling organisms.
In 1829, Edmund Davy was successful in protecting the iron portions of buoys by
using zinc block, and in 1840, Robert Mallet produced a zinc allot that was
particularly suited as a sacrificial anode. The fitting of zinc slabs to the steel hulls of
vessels became standard practice as wooden hulls were replaced. This provided
localized protection specifically against the galvanic action of a

Bronze propeller. Overall protection of seagoing vessels was not investigated again
until 1950, when the Canadian Navy determined that the proper use of antifouling
paints in conjunction with corrosion-resistant paints made cathodic protection of
ships feasible and could reduce maintenance costs.
About 1910-1912 the first application of cathodic protection by means of an
impressed electrical current was undertaken in England and the United States.
Since that time the general use of cathodic protection has spread widely. There are
thousands of miles of buried pipelines and cables, which are protected in this
manner.
This form of protection is also used for water tanks, submarines, canal gates marine
piling, condensers, and chemical equipment.
THEORY
The basis of cathodic protection is shown in the polarizing diagram for a Cu-Zn cell,
Fig. 1. If polarization of the cathode is continued by use of an external current
beyond the corrosion potential to the open-circuit potential of the anode, both
electrodes reach the same potential and no corrosion of the zinc can take place.
The corrosion rate will remain at zero if the metal is polarized slightly beyond the
open-circuit potential FA of the anode. However this excess current has no value and
may be injurious to amphoteric metals or coatings. For this reason in actual practice
the impressed current is maintained close to the theoretical minimum.

If the current falls below that required for complete protection, protection will still be
afforded. There are some criteria for complete protection of the steel and iron
structures as follow:
Potential value, measured at each point of the metal, should be -850 mV or more
negative than -850 mV with respect to Cu/CuSO4 reference electrode.
A 100 mV decrease of potential is sufficient when current is applied to steel
structures.
Polarization of the steel structure to -300 mV with respect to the natural potential
without applying current.
There are two types of cathodic protection: Impressed current cathodic protection
Galvanic anode cathodic protection

IMPRESSED CURRENT CATHODIC PROTECTION
In order to apply cathodic protection, a direct current supply and an auxiliary anode
are needed. This auxiliary anode usually is made of graphite, iron, or have recently
improved titanium materials and is put little away from the structure to be protected.
Anode is connected to positive, structure to negative pole. This allows the current
flow to structure through the electrolyte. Applied voltages are not critical values as
far as it provides sufficient current density to all parts of the structure. The resistivity
of soil defines voltages to be applied.
GALVANIC ANODE CATHODIC PROTECTION
In this system a more active metal than the metal to be protected in galvanic series
is used as an anode. A galvanic cell is established in the current direction as
defined. Magnesium, Aluminum, Zinc and their alloys are used as being galvanic
anode. Because these anodes are portable electricity supply they are used in the
places where is absent or where the cost of furnishing electricity cables to the field.
In US structures are mostly protected by Magnesium anodes. For this reason nearly
10 millions pound magnesium are consumed. Open-circuit potential difference
between magnesium and steel is approx. 1 volt. This means one anode can protect
a certain length of pipeline.

Anode Requirement
The current, necessary to protect a 1m2 surface is called anode requirement of
cathodic protection. The dimension, life expectancy and the number of anodes can
be pointed out by calculations. Some of the electrochemical properties of common
metals to be used as galvanic anode, magnesium, zinc and aluminum are given in
the following table:
Metal Theoretical current capacity, A.hr/lb
Anodic efficiency, %
Practical current capacity A.hr/lb
Magnesium 1000 50 500
Zinc 370 90 333
Aluminum 1345 60 810
Usage With Coatings
Using isolative coating is always an advantage. Such coating is effective in
distributing current, reducing total current requirement and in prolonging life span of
an anode. For example in a coated pipeline, distribution of current is more uniform,
numbers of anodes and the total current requirement is fewer than in bare pipelines.
One anode can protect a longer part of pipe for longer time.
Potential Measurements Protection degree is obtained measuring potential of the structure to be protected
quantitatively. This depends on the concept that cathodic protection is complete
when local action cells of the structure are polarized to open-circuit Anodic potential.
In order to realize this measurement reference electrode should be put as close as
possible to the structure to abandon or minimize the mistakes caused by ohmic
decrease. For the buried pipes a place should be selected in the way of pipe above
the ground level.

OVERPROTECTION
Overprotection of the steel structures, to a moderate degree, usually does not cause
any problems. The primary disadvantages are waste of electric power and increased
consumption of auxiliary anodes. When the overprotection is excessive, hydrogen
can be generated at the protected structure in sufficient quantities to cause blistering
of organic coating, hydrogen embitterment of the steel, or hydrogen cracking.
Damage to steel by hydrogen absorption is more prevalent in environments where
sulfides are present.

CATHODIC PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION IN CONCRETE In recent years cathodic protection of Ferro Crete rods has been involved in cathodic
protection field. Ferro Crete rods can be protected both cathodically and with
impressed current protection system.
The most essential condition for cathodic protection in concrete is that connections of Ferro Crete rods should be perfect. Normally rods are in contact with each other but this is not sufficient for low voltage electric current. It is better to weld rods to each other.
Cathodic Protection Criteria
In normal conditions for a perfect protection of steel structure it should be polarized
cathodically more electronegative than -0,85 V with respect to saturated Cu/Cu
(SO4) 2 reference electrode. This value correspond -0,80 Volts with Ag/AgCl
reference electrode. In cathodic protection system in concrete it is impossible to
reach at this value due to passivity. For cathodic protection of steel in concrete
another criterion should be considered. It is sufficient for protection of steel a
polarization variation of 100 mV.

Application Cathodic Protection
An uniform current distribution is necessary for the application of cathodic protection
to Ferro Crete rods. For this reason the anode shape and size is very important. The
most appropriate method is using oxide coated titanium anodes in cage shape.

PRESSURE VACUUM VENT
In atmospheric storage tanks with stable roof, where petroleum products
are stored
In expulsing of the excess oxygen to atmosphere, which appears
during good entry to tank, in the most cost-efficient way
To eliminate happening of vacuum while discharging of tank
In allowing the air to penetrate tank from atmosphere
In getting rid of vacuum and pressure that caused by temperature
difference between day and night, and air temperature variation,
without corrupting tank safety
Various breathers with flame arrester of different sizes and quantity
depending on tank size, and maximum number of goods in and out of
tank are used
These vents, minimize tank shrinkage, and reduce economically air
pollution, are useful for atmospheric ecological equilibrium
Technical Specifications They are generally manufactured in sizes of 2”, 3”, 4”, 6”, 8”, 10”, 12”
Manufacturing Materials: Aluminum, which is not effected by petroleum products and their steam, AISI 316 stainless steel, asbestos teflon gaskets, and rust resisting bolts.

Clacks Clacks are sections, where breathing occurs and which are likely to be destructed by
petroleum steam, their bearing spindles are AISI 316 stainless steel, and their eloxal
aluminum surfaces are coated with asbestos teflon. The surface, on which claks are
placed, is reinforced with teflon oringle, and fit on each other. In this way, undesired
leakages are minimized between two interfaces.
The help of the lead masses placed on clacks can obtain desired pressure and
vacuum values. No spring is utilized for such process.
Bearing in Clacks: Caterpillar of clacks is loosely guided around, and on center. Spring is not used.
Since guiding is loose and free, possible compression and non-operation do not
occur

Connecting Flanges to Tank:
Connecting section’s design is mounted to flanges compatible with ASA Class 150.
They may be used in other norms on request.
Device Sections:
1) Pressure Clack Section
2) Vacuum Clack Section
All materials, used in Pressure vacuum vent, have characteristic of not expulsing
spark due to beats. They are resistant to corrosion petroleum product steam.
The main body is a sturdy aluminum cost. O` ringlers of vacuum section have been
mounted to this body in a way to allow to remove, and change when necessary. Its
vent clacks, which are eloxal aluminum, loosely guided around and on center, have
been mounted without causing any compression. Peripheral, and central bearing
spindles are made with AISI 316 stainless steel.
Clacks surfaces are plated with asbestos teflon gasket. The surface, which clack will
push, is shaped as a knife blade, and teflon has been slipped on the blade. Matching
of one to another has been totally ensured, and undesired leakages have been
minimized.
Pressure, vacuum, and capacity values are given in the graphics. The device is to
be delivered after adjustment to desired values. The tag on it subsequently shows
vacuum and capacity in “m3/hour”. The section under the vacuum clack is designed
not to let remnants to accumulate, which are caused by condensation of petroleum
steam. Drilling in other norms is available on request.

Clacks:
Clacks are sections, where breathing occurs and which are likely to be destructed by
petroleum steam, their bearing spindles are AISI 316 stainless steel, and their eloxal
aluminum surfaces are coated with asbestos teflon. The surface, on which claks are
placed, is reinforced with teflon oringle, and fit on each other. In this way, undesired
leakages are minimized between two interfaces.
By the help of the lead masses placed on clacks can obtain desired pressure and
vacuum values. No spring is utilized for such process.
Bearing in Clacks:
Caterpillar of clacks is loosely guided around, and on center. Spring is not used.
Since guiding is loose and free, possible compression and non-operation do not
occur.
Connecting Flanges to Tank:

Pressure-Vacuum Vent with Humidity Arrester This vent is to be used, as in base and mineral oil tanks, in case that air penetration
to the tank is undesired. Its difference, from ordinary pressure, is silikogel box
mounted to the air penetration mouth on the bottom vacuum section.
This way, since the air pass through silikogel when entering to the tank, air leaves its
humidity. The silikogel must be replaced in certain time ranges.
Flame Arrestor Flame arresters are manufactured as line and (like pipeline end and on-tank exit),
and interline.
They may be manufactured as flange on both of its ends, and also as a flat on one
of its ends.
Flame arrester unit is in the box and “Crammed Ribbon” type having wholly
changeable characteristic, and manufactured by stainless steel ribbon. The porous
effective cross section of flame arrester unit is less than fire extinguishing diameter
necessary for “air/benzene steam” mixture. Standard Quenching Diameter is
0.75mm.
Total free passing area is longer than the flame arrester’s diameter area.
Generally manufactured in sizes of 2”, 3”, 4”, 6”, 8”, 10”, 12”.
Flame arrester has been manufactured with aluminum cast resistant to petroleum
steam and may be produced with any desired material in case of orders. The flat is
covered with aluminum plate, and also be manufactured with aluminum cast.

Gage Hatch Closed to Atmosphere This type of gage hatch is used in order to ensure pressure and vacuum not to
decrease, and to prevent steam loss during measurement.
This system consists of two sections. When the first section is opened and sample
taking device or meter mass get into it, the upper cover closes. The second section
opens, then sample taking devices, and meter mass are backed off into the tank. In
this way, the system is not opened to atmosphere.
Same process is repeated during taking back. It prevents worker’s face not to be
exposed on steam that allows healthy measurement, and sample taking.
The device’s material is spark-proof aluminum cast. No leaking is concerned due to

Cathodic Protection for Tanks Most of the tanks face fast corrosion problem because of seawater penetration. In
order to get rid of such problem, painting of the inside surface is required; also
internal cathodic protection should be procured. Although the outer bottom of tank
lay just on pitch surface, its cathodic protection is strictly required. Such protection is
practiced in two divers methods:
1) Galvanic Anode System (for internal part)
2) Outer Current-Originated System (for outer bottom)
A. Internal Cathodic Protection
Although salt water comes together with petroleum, products are thrown out during
loading of these tanks. They have corrosiveness impact.
Galvanic anodes (dual types) are primarily used in petroleum storage tanks. These
are, in brief: Mg Anode (Az-63), Mg Anode (HpMg), and Zn Anode, Al-Indium alloy
anodes.
Anodes are to be calculated according to status of tank.
B. External Cathodic Protection for Tank Bottoms
Petroleum storage tanks face often corrosion due to corrosive characteristic of outer
bottom of under and on ground tanks. Galvanic anode protection is applied, but if the
current need is high, outer current-originated cathodic protection should be
implemented.

Cathodic Protection for Pipeline It is well known that all pipes, which are laid underground and beneath seawaters,
corrode due to atmosphere, soil and/or material going through pipes. It has been
understood that strict protection of our pipes against corrosion is sufficient after
implementing appropriate coating and painting methods, and such protection would
only be sufficiently possible if a good cathodic protection has been ensured with a
scientific study. Some serious preliminary studies are required before preparing
cathodic protection project. These are:
- Ground-related studies
- Pipe-related studies
- Environment-related studies
After all necessary data are collected; type of protection system is decided. We can
present these systems under two main groups.
1) Galvanic Anode System
2) Impressed Current System

Above-mentioned systems can be propped according to types of anode to be used
in each of said method.
All the calculations are to be carefully made and implemented after determining sort
of Cathodic Protection.
Isolation of Pipeline This method is implemented to prevent current to jump over undesired sections.
Flanges and bolts that are used in pipe joints are to be isolated. Flange isolation is
procured with an isolator gasket placed between two flanges.
Contact bolts isolation is enabled by slipping a rope, which narrows with heat, over
the bolt.
Placing special teflon, and isolator places will provide full isolation.
Heat Exchangers They are manufactured for various different purposes. Exchangers are produced
according to its projects. Special exchanger pipes are used for this purpose, and
these do not easily cracks.
Valves-Check Valves-By Pass Valves By-pass valves are manufactured in three different sizes, and implement by-pass to
prevent excess pressure in pipelines. Its operating system is made of stainless steel,
and outer surface is coated.

Blended Type Stoppers
These stoppers severe ties between two pipelines in line ends. Stoppers may be
produced of steel materials, and in diver sizes.
Eight profiles, which ensure opening of line in first position, close the line in second
position, and allow no leaking.
Pipeline Flow Surveillance System This system is mounted output stub, on tank, and used for use to survey fuel flow.
Its body is made of aluminum material (may be produced with bronze and stainless
steel on request). Its surveillance glass has a thickness of 15 mm.
It can be cleaned by opening its upper cover without breaking the glass, and the
upper cover can be closed again. Capacity can be roughly monitored during
charging by means of hinged plate put inside. Its plug for taking out sample is
available below. Sample may be taken out by switching its vane.
Pig Receiver and Launcher (Manufacture and Mounting)
This is used to remove fuel dump in the pipelines. It is manufactured in various
different sizes depending on pipeline’s diameter.
Pigs that are put in pipeline pass through the pipelines with pressure caused by
pressure vanes, and manually opened. Same products may be used as receiver on
other end of the pipelines.

Foam Launching Systems A. Foam Mixing Devices
While pressure water pass under foam fluid tank, these devices procure to inject
foam fluid into water in certain proportion.
B. Foam Makers
It is made of aluminum-stereo or stainless steel pipe to generate foam. It combines
water, fluid foam, and air to produce foam. It conveys this foam-to-foam fuse.
C. Foam Fuse
It pours foam. After foam coming from foam maker reach a certain rate of pressure,
glass breaks and foam is poured into tank.

It may have different sizes compatible with tank dimensions. It is mounted to side
surface of tank. In-tank design is made in order to let foam reach fuel surface in the
fastest way.
D. Foam Springs
It is used to squirt foam on ceiling of storage rooms. It distributes foam from foam
maker with raining system.
E. Foam Launching Cannon
It is designed to launch foam on petroleum stored in the tank.
It may function as fixed or portable device. Its monitor has two nozzles in a way to
launch water and foam. Its monitor is manufactured in convertible structure foam
water to foam, or foam to water without cutting water flow and designed as a
manually controlled device. Its monitor capacity is 1500-3000 lt/min.
Its monitor may pivot 360, and incline ahead, and behind 60-70. it may have a
system of two wheels and braking equipment as well as fixed system.
F. Foam/Fluid Storage Tanks
Foam is preserved in a tank in places where mixing device and foam maker are not
used. Foam in tank prevents sedimentation of fuel due to its mixing characteristic.
Tank is painted with epoxy dye, and made of stainless steel. An appropriate
pressure vacuum vent is available over fluid in order to prevent air contact.
Tank Cooling System Petroleum storage tanks should be equipped with foam launching systems for fire
protection. Foam launching systems consists of mixing makers, foam makers and
fire fuse.

Foam fuse is not mounted on tank roof but on tank side 20 cm below its roof. So, if
tank roof is removed, foam launching may continue.
Tank cooling system is provided by springs placed on ends of pipes laid around the
tank.
Water flowing in a appropriate number of springs allows tank cooling. A suitable
spring system should be set up on tank roof. In this way, tank is cooled to prevent
evaporation in cases of fire dangers and in warm weathers.
A Tank Surrounding Cooler Springs
It is used as a tank side water-cooling system, which is mounted on tank
surrounding.
These springs spray the water taken from pipeline to procure tank cooling.
B Tank Roof Cooler Springs
They are mounted on tank roof as a tank cooling system.
They enable cooling of upper part of tank by practicing raining system on tank roof.
C. Fire Hose Records
These hoses are made of aluminum. They are compatible with TSE (Turkish
Standard Institute) standards.
D Special Check Valve of Sea Water Receipt (for Water Pumps)
Absorption pipe, and check valve of this water pump are made of bronze material or stainless steel. It should be ready to serve continuously in order to benefit from seawater in casting plants - located on coastline.
