with it. When we were kids, weused to poke fun at grandma, quipping that she did not guaran-tee the food she prepared. Butnow we realise how good a med-icine it is, says L. Kalyani, a pro-fessional.

Krishnamoorthi of Sri Mee-nakshi Caterers, who is in theproduction of Diwali legiyam forthe past 28 years, says thatthough this legiyam is availableall the year round, they specifical-

ly call it Diwali legiyam because itis a part of the Diwali tradition.Earlier, it was a must in house-holds to prepare this concoctionalong with sweets. Now, most ofthem buy sweets and readymadelegiyam from shops. We prepareit in powder form, called Diwalipodi, and also in semi-solid formcalled legiyam, saysKrishnamoorthi.

So, eat whatever you want butdont forget this legiyam.

Diwali, the festival of lights,is always accompanied byan abundance of sweets.

Whether its from youraunts and uncles from the neigh-bourhood who visit your houseon the special day or the homesof friends where you hang out onthat day, you will be flooded withhomemade jalebis, mysurpas, athirasams and murukku varie-ties. Irrespective of whether youare a fitness freak or calorie-con-scious person, abuse of the stom-

ach is the order of the day. Here comes to your rescue the

Diwali legiyam, a concoctionwhich helps cure indigestion. Insome households, it is a must toswallow this legiyam first thing inthe morning on the day of Diwali.A mix made of dry ginger, athi-mathuram, valmulaku, omam, patta, sombu, elaichiand jaggery, this legiyam helps to prevent andcure indigestion.

coming from office, too. Whats Diwali without the

high-calorie foods andsweets! Sweets are good toeat but do keep in mind thecalorie factor while consum-ing them, says Malathi Mo-han, Dean, Academy ofFitness Management. Manypeople think that fasting canprecede or follow feasting. They think that by avoidingsome regular food, they canfill up with festive goodiesand be none the worse for it.

We dont want to get prea-chy. But, if you plan to forgetall your sweet-tooth resolu-tions, at least till the festivalsare over, we suggest you keepthis time-table (see box) in

mind before you gorge onsweet delights. Happy Diwali!

Okay, its festival seasonand we hear that a ma-

jority of you gorged onplenty of sweets that

your company gifted as partof the Dussehra and AyudhaPuja celebrations. Now, itsthe turn of Diwali and weknow the festivities just getmerrier.

Apart from competitionsand events planned for thefestival of lights, gifting is verymuch an integral part of thetradition. Clients/ customersusher in prosperity with mith-ai boxes (let good sense pre-vail while choosing the gift),

fresh homemade delicaciesare planned at home and, ofcourse, there are more sweets

A festival without sweets is almostunimaginable. But you can certainlykeep a tab on the calorie content

Happy calories for Diwali Exercise regularly as you do on normal days. A brisk walk for around 45 minutes is ideal. Thisapart, simple floor exercises on the gym ball or treadmill (if you have one at home) for 20 minutesshould burn the necessary calories, says Kavitha Ramachandran, Nutrition Specialist and BranchManager of Talwalkars, Nungambakkam.

Prefer jaggery-based sweets over the sugar ones as the nutritional value of jaggery is higher thansugar.

Its raining and you might not be too thirsty for water. However, a higher water intake will fillyour stomach partially and you end up eating less, thus minimising the calorie intake. Fresh juicesare a healthy alternative during the season, Kavitha suggests.

Finally, if you are not ready to give up on sweets, get back to your gym routine as soon as thefestive fever is over.

If you are conscious about your increasing waistline, do keep these pointers in mind

Calorie countAccording to Dietary Guidelines for Indiapublished by the National Institution ofNutrition, 1 gram of ghee has 9 calories and1 tablespoon of ghee has 15 grams of ghee.

Pakistani President Asif AliZardari has issued a warning tothe United States that it had bet-ter stay out of Pakistani territory, reads a news item on thespoof-.com.ut. We are tired of the

Americans coming over here andacting like they own the place, the spoof news report quoted

Zardari as saying. US PresidentGeorge W Bush reacts to the

And let me say that when I getthrough bombing his country, parts of it are gonna end up inIndia, parts are gonna end up inthe Arabian Sea, and parts aregonna be strewn all over westernChina from Tibet to the Haemo-globin Mountains, is Bushs fic-tional retort. The spoof news itemconcludes with a note from theeditor clarifying that the Hae-moglobin with mountains arethe Himalayan Mountains.

    Another spoof news item

clocking hits on the website isabout Zardaris meeting withManmohan Singh in New York on

the sidelines of the UN GeneralAssembly last month.

I want to become a famousleader just like him and I am will-ing to make major concessionson the Kashmir issue just to sit athis feet and drink from his foun-tain of intelligence, it quotesZardari as saying.

The Pakistani media, obviouslynot amused, was flown back toIslamabad in a huff.

Some of the spoof news itemsare also linked to recent reportsin the British media about Zarda-ri suffering from severe mentalhealth problems.

The Pakistan Peoples Party hasdenied these reports and said

there is nothing wrong with Zar-daris mental health.

We want WarneAdamant that a happily retired ShaneWarnes comeback is the only solution tothe Australian cricket teams bowling woes,a newspaper in Australia has launched anonline petition for garnering public supportto force the legendary leg-spinner to thinkof a return. Theres no polite way to spinthis. Australian cricket needs a helpinghand. Our stocks of quality front-linebowlers are low. We dont have a spinnerworthy of the title. Its time to send out anSOS to SKW. Shane Warne, its time you

came out of retirement, the DailyTelegraph wrote in its petition, which wasopened for signing on Monday. Australiaare trailing 0-1 in the ongoing Testseries against India after losing thesecond Test in Mohali by a massive320 runs, one of their worst defeatsin recent memory. The Indianbatsmen thrashed the Aussie attack, which has part-timers Cameron Whiteand Michael Clarke as frontlinespinners. Even Warne was never muchof a success on the Indian tracks but thenewspaper, in its petition, said thetalismanic bowler can still give a lot to theteam as he showed by leading underdogsRajasthan Royals to the Indian PremierLeague twenty20 title earlier this year.

Ponting, Lee at oddsAustralian skipper Ricky Ponting and his starpaceman Brett Lee clashed on field in India

as their team faceddefeat in the second Testin Mohali, reports saidon Tuesday. Pontingsparked an outburstfrom the fast bowler onthe fourth day of theTest on Monday whenhe used all other bowlersexcept Lee in the session

before lunch, Australian media said. TheSydney Morning Herald, which also carried afront-page story headlined How verydisaPonting... Aussies crack under pressureon the teams dismal hope of winning the

Test, said Lees clash with his captain wasvery uncharacteristic of the paceman. But itadded that when all other bowlers weregiven a crack at the Indian batsmen, itbecame too much and he vented hisfrustration. By chance his captain wasfielding a few yards away and Lee took thechance to remind him that he was fit, eagerand had in his time claimed a few scalps more than the rest put together, as a matterof fact, the paper said. Lee is the onlyexperienced Test bowler in Australiasbeleaguered team and told Ponting he wasunhappy at being repeatedly passed over,The Australian said. Ponting walked acrossfrom cover in what became an increasinglyanimated conversation as the captain stoodwith his arms out and his palms up, it saidin a report from Mohali. When Ponting latertried to talk to Lee, the fast bowler keptwalking away from his captain, it added.

ndia completed a crushingvictory over Australia by a rec-

ord margin of 320 runs in thesecond Test at Mohali onTuesday to seize a 1-0 lead in thefour-match series. Left-arm pace-man Zaheer Khan grabbed three

wickets in four balls and Australia, chasing an improbable victorytarget of 516 runs, were dismissedfor 195 before lunch. It was only

Australias second defeat in 28Tests since their 1-2 loss in the2005 Ashes series against En-gland. Both reverses have comeagainst India.

We were outplayed, Australiacaptain Ricky Ponting told report-ers. In batting, bowling andprobably in fielding as well, we

were completely outplayed. It was Indias biggest ever Test

win by runs, bettering their 280-

run success over South Africa inKanpur in 1996. Khan struck in

the first over to dismiss Brad Had-din and snuff out any slim Austra-lian hopes of salvaging a draw.

Australia vice-captain MichaelClarke top-scored with 69 beforebeing the last man out, pulling legspinner Amit Mishra to mid-wick-et. Mishra finished with a matchhaul of seven for 106 after claim-ing five wickets in the first inningson his Test debut. An off-colour

Australia, reduced to 141 for fiveovernight, subsided against paceand spin on a slow Mohali pitch.Khan struck his first blow when hebowled Haddin on his overnightscore of 37 with a perfect off-stump yorker. In the next over, heforced Cameron White (1) to edgea drive to give wicketkeeper Ma-hendra Singh Dhoni a low catch

and he bowled Brett Lee first ballto be on a hat-trick. Clarke, who

added 84 runs for the sixth wicket with Haddin, put on another 50for the ninth with Mitchell John-son (26) before Mishra had thetail-ender caught and bowled.

Harbhajan Singh took fivewickets in the match to leave him-self one short of becoming thethird Indian bowler to claim 300Test wickets.

After years of inspiring footballfans around the world, FC Bar-celona will on Wednesday facethe lesser-known Swiss club

which claims to have been the inspira-tion behind the creation of the Span-ish giants. Swiss champions FC Baselhave organised an exhibition at theirstadium museum ahead of the Cham-pions League Group C encounter, showing how businessman and for-mer Basel player Hans Gamper mi-

grated to Spain before founding FCBarcelona in 1899.

According to legend, Gamper mayeven have based Barcelonas strikinghalf red, half blue team strip on Baselsnear identical colours which had beenin use since the Swiss clubs ownfounding six years earlier. Sadly thereis no historical document proving thatBarcelonas shirts were based on FCBasels, but the circumstantial evi-dence is quite compelling, SwissSport Museum collection leaderHans-Dieter Gerber said. The factthat Gamper went to Spain and set upFC Barcelona who started playing

with the same distinctive colours hehad played in while captaining Baselsuggests the story is at least credible.

Wednesdays match will take place109 years to the day since Gamperstarted FC Barcelona by placing anewspaper advert asking players tocome forward. Known in Spain by theCatalan version of his name, Joan,Gamper himself went on to makenearly 50 appearances for the side, scoring more than 100 goals. His im-portance to the clubs early years hasbeen recognised with a life-size wax-

work at Barcelonas own stadium mu-seum and in the pre-season JoanGamper friendly tournament held ev-ery year since 1966.

    Well-remembered

Gamper is very well rememberedin Barcelona as a Swiss man who came

to our city and always helped outwhen there were historical or politicaldifficulties, Barcelona fan clubs co-ordinator Victor Beceiro i Friedmannsaid at the exhibition opening. Amongthe items on display at the St JakobPark museum is a receipt for 100 FCBasel poster prints bought by Gamperduring a visit back to his homeland in1908. At that time, Barcelona wereclose to financial ruin, promptingspeculation that Gamper, then serv-ing his first term as the clubs presi-dent, may have used the Basel postersto help drum up publicity for thestruggling Spanish side. Decades laterBasel provided the setting for some ofthe Barcelonas earliest internationaltriumphs. First was an Inter-City FairsCup semi-final victory over Birming-

ham in 1958 with Barcelona going onto celebrate the first of a record threevictories in the unofficial forerunnerto todays UEFA Cup competition.Barcelonas first official European tro-phy was also won in Basel with the oldSt Jakob Park hosting their 4-3 winover Fortuna Dusseldorf in the 1979Cup Winners Cup final. But whileBarcelona went on to overcome theirearly difficulties and achieve football

greatness, there was no such happyending for Gamper. Banished fromSpain after being accused of fosteringCatalan nationalism, he returned toSwitzerland and committed suicide in1930 after losing his fortune as a resultof the previous years Wall Streetcrash. When I was researching for theexhibition, Gampers granddaughterin Spain told me that his name hadlong been taboo within the family be-

cause of the suicide, which was veryhard to accept in such a strongly Ca-tholic country, said Gerber. Withchanging attitudes, and the distanceof time, that seems to be changing andhopefully the exhibition and themeeting of his two former clubs on

Wednesday can help remind people ofGampers importance to the joint his-tory of both teams.

Jurors in Britney Spears trial for driving without a

valid license ended a second day of deliberationson Monday without a verdict and indicated theycould be deadlocked.

After retiring to consider their verdict in the misdemea-nour case last Friday, jurors returned to court on Monday to weighevidence against Spears, who was not required to attend during thetwo-day trial last week.

Jurors indicated earlier Monday they were stuck at 10-2, withoutrevealing which way they were leaning.

Van Nuys Superior Court Judge James Steele requested the jury con-tinue deliberating before they were released for the day. The jurors willresume deliberations on Tuesday.

The trial went ahead after the singer rejected a plea deal that wouldhave seen her fined 150 dollars and given one years probation.

The case stems from an August 2007 incident when paparazzi trailingthe singer caught her bumping a car in a parking lot and driving away.

Prosecutors say Spears was later discovered not to have a validCalifornia license. She was charged with a misdemeanour - puni-shable by jail or a fine - but for a first offense Spears is unlikely

to receive a custodial sentence. Spears defense argued thestar held a valid Louisiana license at the time of the incidentand was not legally required to hold a California permitbecause she was not living permanently in the state atthe time.

She is a Louisiana girl, born there, lived there, and

going back there as soon as things are straightened

out here, defense lawyer J. Michael Flanagan told jurors in closing arguments.

Spears - who hit rock bottom in January whenshe was twice rushed to hospital for psychiatric

treatment after losing custody of her two youngsons - appears to have got her career back on

track. Her new single Womanizer topped Bill-boards Hot 100 singles chart last week, her firstNo.1 on the ranking since 1999s Baby OneMore Time.
