Mr. Virgin has donated many hours of his time (not to mention his own funds) to answer many, many requests to the Society. We know he deserves a rest from this task and we greatly appre- ciate all he has done for us. We thank him for a job "well done" and also carry the hope that at some future date he will again be available for help. - 1 -

NATIONAL ARCHIVES The following is copied from the June, 1982 Newsletter of the Illinois State Genealogical Society. The Kankakee Valle Gen. 'Soc. requests the help of all their members. Let's try for a 100% showing. "Genealogists from all over the country have enthusiastically endorsed a program proposed by the Genealogical Coordinating; Committee in Indian- apolis, May 1982, to solicit at least ONE DOLLAR PER YEAR PER GENEALOGIST for the creation of finding aids in genealogy at the U. S. National Archives for which there can be no government funding. Projects under consideration include: 1) finding aids for complete pension files for the American Revolution and the War of 1812 2) completing the index to Passport Applications, and microfilming the entire index 3) microfilming of Civil War Records (service records, volunteer records) "You can help! Write a check in any amount, payable to ILLINOIS STATE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. Mark the check: ARCHIVES GIFT FUND. Your gift is tax-deductible and your cancelled check will be your receipt. The ISGS Treasurer, when sufficient monies have been received will mail a check payable to the FEDERATION OF GENEALOGICAL SOCIETIES.... (A photo- copy of all checks sent to the Federation will be made and eventually filed as a record of donors at the National Archives.) When sufficient funds have accumulated for a specific finding aid, to be selected by the Genealogical Coordinating Committee in consultation with the staff of the National Archives, a check will be sent to the National Archives "Gift Fund" in an amount to cover that finding aid, and the genealogical community. will be notified when the aid becomes available. "Gifts of $100 or more may be sent directly to the Federation of Genea- logical Societies, Box 2201 Davenports Iowa 52805. (Checks should be marked ARCHIVES GIFT FUND.) Donors' names will be inscribed on a spec- ial Honor List." We, the KVGS, requests that each one of our members send at least ONE DOLLAR (marked GIFT FUND) to: Karen Berdan, Research Librarian, Kankakee Public Library, P. 0. Box 1659, Kankakee, IL 60901. At the end of this year, Karen will mail one check covering all our donations to the Illinois State Genealogical Society as our Society's contribution to this much- needed project. Thank you. FATHER MEYER'S BOOK The KVGS wishes to thank everyone for the response we have received on the reprint of the Rev. Joseph Meyer's 278 page, 1920 book Parish His- tory of Saints Peter and Paul Church of Pilot and Sacred Heart Church in Goodrich (Illinois). County organization in Illinois dates back to 1779 with the organization of the "County of Illinois" but was not effective and was known as the Illinois Territory until 1790. (Our area was located in the Indiana Territory). On June 20, 1790, we were part of Knox County until Feb 3, 1801 when county boundries were changed and we belonged to St.Clair County (also Territory of Indiana). In 1809 we were attached to Illinois Territory and is of September 14, 1812, we became part of Madison County. On November 28, 1814, Edwards County was formed from over threefourths of the Eastern half of the State of Ill. December 31, 1816, Crawford County was formed out of all but the most southern section of Edwards County. Clarke County came into being the same way on March 22, 1819. On January 31, 1821, Pike County took over the northern part of the state from the Illinois River and Kankakee (Theokiki) River north. South of the Kankakee River remained with Clarke. On January 3, 1823, Edgar County included what is now Iroquois, Ford, Eastern Will and that part of Kankakee County south of the Kankakee River and that part east of a line 24 miles from the Indiana State Line. The rest of Kankakee County, being Rockville and a portion of Bourbonnais Townships, and Western Will County becoming part of Fulton County. Again the Illinois River and Kankakee River became the boundry line between Edgar County on the South and Putnam County on the North on January 13, 1825. And, on Jan. 18, 1826, Vermillion replaced Edgar County as our seat of government. On Jan. 15, 1831, Cook County came into being and extended down to the north one-half of what is now Will County. Ver- million claimed the rest. On February 26, 1833, Iroquois County was formed Incorporating most of the south one-half of what is now Will County, all of Kankakee County except the two townships of Essex and Norton on the west and alltof what is the present Iroquois County. Vermillion County claimed the rest of - 10 -

Will County, the two townships of western Kankakee County, the south- east part of what is now Livingston County and the area which is now Ford County. On January 12, 1836, Will County was formed from the southern portion of Cook County and the northern portion of Iroquois County with the Kankakee River as its southern boundary. Kankakee County was the third from the last county to be established. Being formed from the two townships from Vermillion County, the southern portion of Will County and the northern portion of Iroquois County. Ford County was the last to be established on February 17, 1859. The above was excerpted from a 65 page booklet compiled and pub- lished by ex-Secretary of State, Paul Powell, titled Counties of Illinois Their Origin and Evolution, With Twenty-Three Maps Showing the Original and the Present Boundary Lines of Each County of the State.
