With over 20 years of video compression expertise, Ericsson is an established market leader in the Contribution and Primary Distribution market. Our systems are being used by broadcasters, content owners and service providers around the globe. Ericsson’s Content Exchange solution enables the distribution of contribution-quality content between multiple locations, typically via satellite, wireless or fiber links. This contribution material is normally 4:2:2 with 10 bit precision to maintain the highest picture quality during the production process.

The Ericsson Content Exchange solution addresses a range of applications, including basic point-to-point links where broadcasters capture live events from a sports stadium and deliver the content to studios or service providers to offer managed services to customers over their networks, or even to broadcasters to manage their own service delivery over a leased network.

The rapidly growing demand for 4K Ultra-High Definition television (UHDTV) services operating at faster frame rates in higher resolution, combined with the increasing amount of content carried in High Definition (HD) format, continues to put pressure on infrastructure bandwidth limitations, and this is not likely to change in the near future. This means that improved video compression efficiency continues to drive cost efficiencies for operators in managing their network utilization.

The Ericsson Content Exchange solution has been deployed to deliver premium sporting events such as the FIFA World Cups, Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games. Ericsson solutions have also been instrumental in driving the introduction of new technologies such as HD at the London Summer Olympic Games and more recently 4K UHDTV at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

There are many key benefits delivered by the Ericsson Content Exchange solution, all of which are designed to meet the challenges of Service Providers and Broadcasters, when looking to deploy this crucial element of the media processing chain.

The increasing amount of content captured and consumed in HD format, combined with the growing market demand for better picture quality and higher resolution, is putting pressure for picture quality on contribution links to be maintained at the highest level. In addition, with the TV screen size increasing to 60 inches and above, features such as greater bit depth precision, faster frame rates and higher resolution will play a critical role.

> Ensures high picture quality > Supports high resolution, including 4K UHDTV Phase 1 > Equipment can easily be repurposed > Optional dual power supplies and hot swap modules > Scalable from basic point-to-point links to large multiple

location systems > Management systems deliver real-time data enabling proactive

control and monitoring > Network agnostic systems support all delivery methods - fiber,

satellite and wireless > 24/7 worldwide support services with presence in 180 countries > Supports multiple bandwidth saving technologies with simple

upgrade options, including HEVC, DVB-S2X and Seamless Protection Switching (SMPTE 2022-7)

Introduction Market Challenges

Solution Benefits

> With 10 bit depth precision now being added to set-top boxes and the TV screen size getting bigger, it is critical for the contribution links to support greater bit depth to maintain a quality differential for services

> 4K UHDTV is largely being driven by the demand for live sports as subscribers are willing to pay a premium for the content. This in turn is driving revenues. Fast moving content, such as sports, when viewed on a larger screen, need high frame rates to support the content, otherwise it causes a juddering effect.

nCompass is designed for static systems that require a simple, easy to use management tool to control and monitor the configuration and performance of the compression system. It supports a range of products including encoders, multiplexers, receivers and modulators, third-party ECM/EMM generators and switches. nCompass is a highly proven solution and is used by broadcasters and service providers across the world to manage and monitor thousands of services delivered by hundreds of systems.

nCompass Connector is a module within the nCompass management suite designed to specifically manage distributed video devices over medium to large broadcast systems using modern IP MPLS technology. It removes the complexity of configuring advanced encoders or routing services over the network, enabling operators to focus on activities that enhance their operations.

In addition, with the new IP analytics package available, operators can proactively manage the network addressing issues before they become a problem due to the real-time Quality of Service data provisioned by this integrated solution. Data such as graphic thumbnails at each point of video delivery, network jitter and data on dropped packets is available to help determine issues and prove the quality of the service delivered.

Furthermore, nCompass Connector provisions powerful scheduling and resource management through its dedicated interface to the ScheduALL resource management and transmission booking application from Net Insight AB. This further extends the complete Content Exchange eco-system from Ericsson.

The core of Ericsson’s Content Exchange solution consists of a range of best-of-breed products from its Video Processing, Transmission and Integrated Receiver Decoder product families. In addition to these award winning products, Ericsson offers near-product services such as implementation and 24/7 monitoring across the globe.

For larger systems that require more than just compression equipment, Ericsson Prime Services deliver a complete end-to-end solution, including buildings and infrastructure, systems integration and full support even for third-party equipment.

Products and Services

Ericsson AVP 1000 is an ideal product that links legacy equipment, with bi-directional ASI interfaces, to modern IP MPLS networks. The AVP 1000 Network Adapter can also be upgraded to either AVP 2000 Contribution Encoder or AVP 3000 Voyager DSNG due to its unified platform approach.

AVP 1000 Network Adapter

The AVP 2000 Contribution Encoder is an advanced video processing platform that primarily targets contribution applications based on MPEG-2, MPEG-4 or HEVC compression formats. The unit is extremely flexible and can be easily repurposed to support a range of applications from basic 4:2:0 standard definition mode to being an element of 4K UHDTV system supporting 4:2:2 10 bit precision at 1080p59.94/60 frames per second. A modern and powerful graphical user interface and a fully functional front panel ensure ease of use.

AVP 2000 Contribution Encoder

The Ericsson RX8200 Receiver builds on the success of previous generation receivers complementing all advanced features available on the AVP 2000 Encoder and AVP 3000 Voyager, including 10 bit precision and 1080p59.94/60 frames per second. It can operate across all modern network infrastructures due to a wide range of interfaces, including ASI, DVB-S, DVB-S2, DVB-S2X and GigE IP. It also supports all main compression formats, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC and HEVC, with the added benefit of Seamless Protection Switching (SMPTE 2022-7), all in a single unit. This makes the Ericsson RX8200 the most flexible receiver on the market.
