Principal’s Message

In July we learned the exciting news that we would be welcoming our Ravens back full time! We can’t tell you how wonderful it has been watching our students adapt to our new situation and get back to the routines of learning and socializing in safe and meaningful ways. Rosedale truly is a wonderful community where students and families get together to face challenges and create amazing opportunities.

Whether this is your first or ninth year at RTCS, we know that it will be year full of interesting challenges, learning and of course, fun! Our RTCS staff is excited and ready to take on the new school year and has already done a great job of preparing our students for safe and enjoyable experiences. We know our students are in great hands!

On Thursday September 10th, we welcomed more than 500 Ravens through the doors. We also have some new Raven Staff joining us this year: Mrs. Petkau who is covering for Mr. Beauchene, Ms. Marchuk who is covering for Mrs. Tizzard, Mrs. Gislason who is covering for our Resource Teacher Posting, Mr. Lamm and Mrs. Edwards who are covering our EA postings and we would like to congratulate Mrs. Kohuch who has taken the Grade 2 position.

We work hard to make sure our families feel connected to RTCS. We ask that you reach out if you have any questions or concerns about your student’s learning or experience. Throughout the year, we strongly encourage families to refer to our website and Facebook page for upcoming events and information. If you are not currently receiving school emails, please reach out to our office to confirm that we have your correct email address. Finally, a gentle reminder to complete the online Technology Acceptable Use Agreement Form that will be sent to you through a program called Permission Click.

I am so thankful to come back to this amazing school and community. Together we will pursue our goal to care, engage and inspire our students to be the best they can be. Ms. Erin McAstocker, Principal .

UPCOMING EVENTS

Supervision for students begins at 7:30 a.m. Please do not drop off your students or have them walk to school before supervision begins. We also ask that if you are using the drop-off lane, that you remain in your car. This will keep traffic flowing. If you need to get out of your car, please park in the parking lot.

Student Pick Up

We are doing our best to maintain social distancing at the end of the day and have worked at staggering our dismissal to reduce congestion. We ask that students and parent do no congregate at the front entrance so students can get to their bus or car without walking through a crowd. Students who are getting picked up by a car are asked to wait on the sidewalk in front of the Library.

End of Day

In order to avoid congestion, we ask that students who are walking, biking, or scootering home to leave campus right away. Those waiting for late buses are asked to wait on the playground and to avoid the front entranceway.

Dress for Outside

As we follow the PHO guidelines, we know that outdoor learning and activities are the safest way to avoid the spread of viruses. We ask that all our students are prepared to go outside each and every day. Please dress for the weather to allow for these rich learning experiences.

Visitors/Masks/Doorbell

We encourage any parents who need to meet with staff to make an appointment. Each visitor will need to complete their own health check, sign in, wash your hands, and wear a mask in our common areas. If you don’t have a mask, we will provide one for you. If you arrive and the doors are locked, please ring the doorbell and someone from our office will assist you.

Health Checks

Star Reader Program

Yearbook Reminder

Just a reminder to order your school yearbook early. The cost of the Yearbook is currently $40.00 if you order from the school office and pay before December 31st. The price of the yearbook will increase to $45.00 after December 31st.

Reminder……..

If your child reads for 15 minutes a night, or you to them, record it in their “Reading Log” which is located in their Agenda Book. For the Primary Classes that do not use agenda books, students can pick up a “Reading Log” from the Library. Once they have completed 25 nights, return the log to the Library and they will be eligible for some great prizes. There will be special presentations upon reaching 100 nights. It is never too late to join (you may have to back date for September), and if you need another “Reading Log” you pick one up at the Library, or go to our school website:

http://rtcs.sd33.bc.ca/ Library – Star Readers and download the PDF.

The Star Reader program is once again happening at Rosedale. All elementary students are invited to participate in the 150 nights of reading sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

A reminder that we are a Peanut Aware and a Scent Aware school. We have a number of students who have life threatening allergies to peanuts and we request that you make peanut free choices for snacks and lunches. Also, please try to use scent free products so that everyone can “breathe easier” at RTCS.

Permission Click Forms

Early next week you will receive an email to complete the School District #33 Technology Acceptable Use Agreement form through Permission Click. It is important for all of our students to have this form completed in order for them to:

• Log-in to a school computer

• Use Student Wi-Fi

• Access any online services such as Office 365, MyBlueprint or FreshGrade

• Be included on School Messenger Lists

We will also be sending out through Permission Click, the Media Parent Release form and our Fruit and Vegetable program form. All three of these forms are required to be completed for all students yearly.

A reminder that parents need to do a quick health check with their child each and every day. If your student is feeling sick, please keep them home until they are feeling better. We all need to do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19.

School Photo Day

School photos will be taken in the morning on Tuesday, September 29th. All students and staff are requested to wear their black uniform shirts for photo day.

Every Child Matters

Wear an Orange coloured shirt on Wednesday, September 30th to commemorate the thousands of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children who at one time were removed from their homes to instead attend residential schools.

Raven’s Nest

Some of you may already be familiar with our school’s cafeteria and for some it might be your first time. To all, we say welcome! After months of being home I am happy to be back serving our RTCS families. The weekly menu and the link to order via MunchALunch can be found on the RTCS website under the cafeteria link; you will also find a copy of my Covid-19 safety plan. If you have any questions about menu items, etc. please feel free to email me at [email protected]. Hot lunches will begin on September 14th, 2020.

The Raven’s Nest will operate in much the same way it has in previous years with a couple of Covid-19 friendly adjustments. Families are strongly encouraged to pre-order; this cuts down on students and staff sharing things outside of their cohort. Pre-ordering for the week can be done at the beginning of the week or online daily/weekly using MunchALunch. Same day orders will still be processed as long as they are submitted into their classroom bin in the morning. In an effort to maintain our cohorts, students will not be coming down to the cafeteria at break or lunch but instead will have their orders delivered to their classroom. Deliveries will only be made for the lunch break; students are required to bring a snack from home for morning break.

I look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting all the new ones!

Family Accident Reimbursement Plan

The Chilliwack School District or Schools Protection Program (SPP) does not insure expenses for student injuries that happen on school grounds or during school activities. Parents/guardians are responsible for these expenses

iA Financial Group offers a comprehensive accident insurance plan to families with a critical illness component designed for the whole family.

The Family Accident Reimbursement Plan is ideal for supplementing costs not covered by your provincial health insurance or existing employer extended health and dental plans. Regardless of the size of your family, all eligible family members can be insured under one set monthly rate.

To apply or to find out more information, visit this website: solutionsinsurance.com/aonbc

Medical Alert

If your child has a medical condition or allergy that may be life-threatening, or requires your son or daughter to use an Epipen or Inhaler, please notify our office staff so that we are able to update our files with their correct information. Please provide the office staff with an up-to-date Epipen or Asthma Inhaler that can be kept on hand should your child require its use while they are at school.

Wanted!

Mrs. Donaldson is desperately looking for your empty cereal boxes – of ANY kind!! If you have some and can drop them off flattened at the office that would be great! Also, any old magazines you might have would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

Strong Start Dates

RTCS Athletics

At this time British Columbia School Sports (BCSS) is

currently in Phase 2 of COVID-19 protocols (this is

different than via sport which many of our community

sports are in Phase 3). Within this phase at the

middle school level athletes are restricted to

participation within their cohort. Dr. Bonnie Henry

suggested that inter-school competitions likely won’t

take place for quite some time. Please check the

RTCS webpage and social media channels for

updates. Information will be posted there if this

changes and we are able to offer any athletic

programs this year.

PE News

PE classes will look similar to a ‘regular’ PE class this year. Students will be in their assigned cohorts and any equipment used will be cleaned and sanitized after each use.

Change rooms are open and students are encouraged to change but we are limiting use to 5 students at a time. If students do not wish to change they are encouraged to wear their PE strip during the day that they have PE. Having PE strip for class is essential for student success.

PE gym strip stock has arrived so please get your child’s orders in ASAP. Their PE teacher will issue it to them during their gym class. Available items include the grey cotton t-shirt, red microfiber t-shirt, pocketed short, and grey and black hoodies. ***New this year*** are ‘RAVENS Joggers’ which will be great pant when the weather cools down a bit for PE use or to wear in class. These come in youth (medium, large, and extra-large), mens, and ladies sizes. Order forms are available at the school office.

Strong Start sites in the Chilliwack School District will be opening on Monday, October 5th. The plan for RTCS at this time (subject to change) is to have two classes available (one from 8:15 - 9:30 a.m., and one at 10:00 - 11:15 a.m.).

The RTCS Strong Start will be limited to 4 families at a time. The School District is currently looking into an e-registration and online reservation system. Unfortunately, there will not be any drop ins. Families will be required to meet at the Community Entrance doors and wait for Mrs. Karr (RTCS Strong Start Coordinator) who will greet you, do a health check, and then move families/students directly to the classroom to wash their hands before going off to play. We will not be having any gym time.

If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Kim Karr, RTCS Strong Start Coordinator at [email protected].

Strong Start sites will be closed on the following dates: Wednesday October 14, 2020 Wednesday November 18, 2020 Wednesday January 20, 2021 Wednesday February 24, 2021 Wednesday April 21, 2021 Thursday May 20, 2021

RTCS P.A.C. September News

Welcome Back Ravens!

Our first PAC meeting of the year will be held on Zoom and will serve as our AGM. Elections will be held for PAC executive positions for the 2020/2021 school year.

*********************************************************************** Coupon Book Fundraiser

*********************************************************************** Breakfast Program The Breakfast Program will be operating differently going into this year. Each classroom will have a basket stocked with free grab and go items such as fruit and granola bars that the students can help themselves to.

We know both our students and volunteers will miss our mornings together, especially pancake Wednesdays, so we are hopeful that we can eventually go back to our regular program.

The Chilliwack School District and community partners are committed to making our schools safe for students and staff. As a result, schools will respond to all student behaviours that pose a potential risk to themselves, other students, staff, and members of the community. Student Threat Assessment Protocol: FAIR NOTICE

What behaviours initiate a student threat assessment?

A student threat assessment will be initiated when behaviours include, but are not limited to, serious violence or violence with intent to harm, or kill, verbal/written threats to harm/kill others, Internet website/MSN threats to harm/kill others, possession of weapons (including replicas), bomb threats and fire setting. Duty to report

To keep school communities safe and caring, staff, parents, students and community members must report all threat-related behaviours. What is a threat?

A threat is an expression of intent to do harm or act out violently against someone or something. Threats may be verbal, written, drawn, posted on the Internet or made by gesture. Threats must be taken seriously, investigated and responded to. What is a Threat Assessment Team?

Each school has a Threat Assessment Team which is multi-disciplinary. The team may include Principal, Vice-Principal, District Resource Reacher, School Counsellor and Police. What is the purpose of a student threat assessment?

The purposes of a student threat assessment are:

To ensure the safety of students, staff, parents and others.

To ensure a full understanding of the context of the threat.

To understand factors contributing to the threat makers’ behavior.

To be proactive in developing an intervention plan that addresses the emotional and

physical safety of the threat maker.

To promote the emotional and physical safety of all.

What happens in a student threat assessment?

All threat making behavior by a student shall be reported to the Principal who will activate the protocol for the initial response. Once the team has been activated, interviews may be held with the student(s), the threat maker, parents and staff to determine the level of risk and develop and appropriate response to the incident. Intervention plans will be developed and shared with parents, staff and students as required.

Can I refuse to participate in a threat assessment process?

It is important for all parties to engage in the process. However, if for some reason there is a reluctance to participate in the process by the threat maker or parent/guardian, the threat assessment process will continue in order to promote a safe and caring learning environment.
