RECKLINGHAUSEN When two poets can talk, listening to his beautiful. At the Piano Festival Ruhr clashed with Tzimon

Barto and Christoph Eschenbach two famous soloists. Both come together on and off while playing, but far from the

perfection of the ground-in full-time duo. By Klaus Lipinski

    Elapsed love

Eschenbach was formerly known as a very lyrical pianist, Barto is still there. Whether in Schumann's "Studies for pedal piano"

in the lovely editing by Debussy, Schubert's Fantasy in F minor, or where the subject Barto played so ravishingly tender and

plaintive. Sometimes it seemed as if the older men tell in a touching way of bygone love.

    Quarter-tone tuning

When it came to let loose intoxicating effect, however, they were controlled and restrained. This is especially noticed in the

Sonata, Op 34b of Brahms, as well as tied to the slow movement. In Ives' three-quarter-tone pieces, they took the unusual

effect of the color-sensitive mood more than the rhythmic force of the final piece.

Patricio Silva is the current winner of the "Barto Prize". An annual composition competition, in which the piano music must

relate to poems. To the "Three movements for piano" belonging to the Portuguese Fernando Pessoa poems, however,

remained hidden. The second movement plays a sensual way with layers of sound, the other two motor radiate energy.

Prokofiev would have been fun, but Barto was completely in his element.

Despite this, in Ruhrfestspielhaus Recklinghausen very clear that chamber music is very exciting whenever meet two distinct

characters. Who is bothered that they were apart sometimes, when something really should be together. Sometimes even

very far to look much the chords. But they remain in their extremely intense slow movements.
