It really did Eshowe Hospital good to

know that there are still so many

kind, generous and caring people left

in the world, the art of giving has not

yet come extinct. Try it sometimes,

give from the heart without expecting

anything in return. It is indeed one of

life’s greatest joys to witness the hap-

piness you can create by giving. Dif-

ferent people donated toys to the chil-

dren in wards i.e. Mbali and ward 7.

smiles were written on their faces.

The staff clinic was started in 2001.

It was operating on Tuesday morn-

ings from 08h00-10h00 in MOPD by

Mrs. IM Lewis. Mrs. ME Reynecke

Program Manager (OHS & IPC)

took over in 2004.

Mrs. ME Reynecke identified that

there is a need for a full time staff

clinic where they will receive total

care that will improve work perfor-

mance . Mrs. Reynecke motivated

for a venue and the renovation of

the building that was identified .

The full time clinic was started in

January 2006; she also motivated for

a doctor to see all the sick staff dai-

ly , an EAP practitioner and a full

time OHS manger. In January 2006

Dr. E Brits started to see the staff in

the morning and also prescribed

treatment that they received from

the pharmacy, this ensured that

staff did not leave their work areas

and absenteeism was reduced. In

July 2006 Mrs. R Chetty (OHS)

started at the clinic , the staff start-

ed visiting the clinic every day

07h00-16h00. The services ren-

dered at the clinic are: treatment of

sick staff, baselines for new staff,

family planning, routine periodical

Chest X-ray, HCT, counseling and

also the availability of ARV’s and

injuries on duty. Awareness days

were done for staff. The hospital

had voluntary EAP practitioners,

but there was a need for a full

time EAP practitioner. Miss L

Xulu joined the wellness team

in June 2008, now the clinic is

an ideal wellness clinic for all

staff, they can be offered treat-

ment for acute illness and

chronic medical conditions,

assisted with social problems.

This ensures happy, motivated

staff that increases production

and reduces absenteeism. The

wellness clinic building con-

sists of a consulting room for

Mrs. R Chetty / Dr Murugan, a

consulting room for Miss L

Xulu, a waiting area that can

also be used for counseling

and an office

for Mrs. ME

Reynecke

(IPCM) who

also attends

to the staff

when Mrs.

R Chetty is

ble.
