Attendance

● Each child is required by law to attend school. If a child is absent due to illness or other reasons, he/she must bring a signed excuse from his/her parents and present that excuse to his/her teacher and the office.

● If you child is absent, please report the absence by calling 792 - 0639, Ext. 225 (attendance line) any time of day or night. Illinois State Law requires the school to contact parents if their child does not show up for school. If an absence is reported to us, it will drastically reduce the number of calls by the school to locate absent children.

○ hospital one (with the feet) does not work.

● A completed Physical

● If you need to apply for a fee waiver for book fees, please

bring:

○ Month’s worth of wage statements for everyone living in the household who is working otherwise:

○ Bring check or cash to pay for the $42.00 book fees for each child. We do not take credit/debit cards.

● Each new family will have registration paperwork to fill out on registration day.

ELL and Multilingual/Bilingual Learners

TEACHERS:

- Mrs. Henderson (PreK - 4th Grade EL Teacher)

INSTRUCTION:

- Co-Taught Kindergarten ELA and Math in the general education classroom with a Kindergarten general education teacher (Mrs. Wieland for 2020-2021) and EL teacher.

What is the EL Program?

The program involves teaching English social and academic language skills to speakers of other languages (this includes if your child is multilingual and already uses social and academic English) and it most often interchanged with the term ESL teaching/teachers. Here at GOB, while the language of EL instruction is English (with supplemental L1, as needed), we focus on the importance and promotion of bilingualism and multilingualism in the developing child.

BILINGUAL PARAPROFESSIONAL (SPANISH/ENGLISH)

In the effort to establish a bilingual setting and mode of communication with EL families and students, the district hired a bilingual paraprofessional in 2020. The para works with all students and families, in both English and Spanish.

Survey

Identification of ELL and Multilingual/Bilingual Learners

Home Language Survey: The home language survey (HLS) is a questionnaire given to parents or guardians that helps schools and LEAs identify which students are potential EL and bilingual students . This will determine whether they are eligible for language services. The school also has a bilingual paraprofessional to assist in the instruction.

The survey will ask the following:

1. Is a language other than English spoken in your home?

2. Does your child speak a language other than English?

IMPORTANT: If you answer YES to one or both of these questions, the law requires us to assess your student for the EL/Multilingual Learner Program. Please note, this question is asking if a student is apart of a bilingual or multilingual household AND/OR speaks another language. We cannot change the HLS once we put it into the state system. If you believe you may have filled out the form incorrectly prior to us entering information in the system, please let us know and you can write a statement to alter this.

Does your child have an individualized education plan (IEP)?

If so, your child may work with one or more of the teachers listed on the previous slide.

Mrs. Gustafson may work with your child if they benefit from full day, individualized instruction.

Mrs. Casarotto may pull your child to work in her room or push in to provide academic, social, or behavioral supports.

Ms. Culliton is our speech teacher and she may provide supports to your child both in her room or within the regular classroom.

Reading & Math Support

Our title teachers benchmark our students three times a year (fall, winter, spring) to track their progress. Should your child need extra support, we have a wonderful team of teachers ready to help! Our title teachers work with small groups, helping close gaps in understanding.

Our reading support teachers typically pull students into their classrooms five times a week for thirty minutes.

Our math support teacher may pull students into their classroom or may push into the classroom to provide support.
