Energy Savings Opportunity SchemeExplained

ESOS is the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme that has been established by the Department for Energy and Climate Change. The scheme is implemented in the UK in the response to the requirement for all EU Member States to comply withArticle 8 of the Energy Efficiency Directive.

Who needs to become compliant?It is mandatory for organisations in the UK that meet the definition of a Large Undertaking.

Does my business meet the definition of a large undertaking?The regulations state this is a business which:Employs at least 250 persons; orEmploys fewer than 250 persons but has:An annual turnover in excess of 50 million andAn annual balance sheet in excess of 43 millionIs part of a corporate group which includes an undertaking that meets either of the above criteria

What should I do if my business qualifies for ESOS?If your organisation qualified for the scheme as of 31st December 2014, then you will have to meet the requirements and may have to undertake an ESOS audit.

What are the requirements of the scheme?To measure your total energy consumption. Including Buildings, Transport and Industrial operations use of fuel, electricity and gas.Ensure that at least 90% of that consumption is audited and analysed for energy-saving opportunities by an ESOS-approved method.Report your compliance to the Environment Agency.

Am I already on the route to ESOS compliance?If you are already certified to any of the following schemes, you may already be on the route to ESOS compliance:ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard (must be UKAS approved)Green Deal AssessmentDisplay Energy Certificate

What will the ESOS audit involve?FPA can provide recognised Lead Assessors to carry out the ESOS audit. It involves preliminary scoping work, data collection and building selection prior to conducting any site survey work that may be required, before the production and presentation of a final Executive Audit Report.

What date do I need to be compliant with the ESOS scheme for?
