For many years, Cenovus was delighted to support the Esplanade and their Educational Programming, which aims to enrich children’s learning experience through arts and culture. Learning is one of the main areas where we concentrate our community investment activities. As we have now sold our conventional oil and natural gas assets in southern Alberta and in Saskatchewan, our presence in Medicine Hat and other communities in the area is coming to an end. We would like to thank Medicine Hat and the Esplanade for their continuous support through the years and hope our engagement has made a positive impact.

Highly coloured and deeply contemplative, these remarkable new paintings from Medicine Hat College Visual Communications faculty artist Yulin Wang are the result of a meticulous and lengthy painting process based on historical ceramic and bronze objects from his own collection.

Internationally renowned Edmonton printmaker Sean Caulfield conjures the dark trauma of destruction as well as the potential for regeneration in his carved wood sculpture and relief mural works. Exposing the processes behind his woodcut, mezzotint and linocut prints, these new works are powerfully moving and monumental in scale.

Tapestry by artist-makers rather than artist-designers, is rare in a time of instantaneity and the global outsourcing of skilled labour tasks. These fascinating tapestry works by Ann Newdigate, Jane Kidd and Murray Gibson raise provocative and pertinent questions about the use of traditional skills, changing perceptions of time, and how tapestry as a seemingly anachronistic practice is relevant as contemporary art.

The Hunt museum exhibit is a detailed look at the history of hunting and wildlife conservation in Southern Alberta from the earliest human habitation to the modern day. Hunting has changed much over time, but has always been a part of the culture and traditions in Alberta. ECHOES IN THE ICE: FINDING FRANKLIN’S SHIP

November 17, 2018 - February 16, 2019

Ever since explorers began searching for a Northwest Passage over 400 years ago, the Arctic has been a fascinating and important area of study, rich with drama, adventure, even tragedy. Using artefacts, images, audiovisual presentations, and art, Echoes in the Ice: Finding Franklin’s Ship examines Arctic exploration past and present, profiles the explorers involved in the search for the Northwest Passage, and decodes the mysteries of the Franklin Expedition of 1845, when an entire crew vanished in the Arctic during an ill-fated search.
