ESSAY MICRO-SKILLS

A LINKING SENTENCE DOES THIS JOB

Page 3: Essay micro skills - 2 - creating a linking sentence

THIS SKILL WILL BE USED ONLY TWICE IN YOUR ESSAY, BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT

LINKING SENTENCES ARE NOT CREATIVE, BUT THEY ARE IMPORTANT.

Firstly, conflict occurs between Camp Officials such as Mr Pedanksi, Mr Sir and the Warden. The warden sternly states, “And the next time I tell you to do something, I expect you to do

it without questioning my authority”, which shows that she believes she is ultimately responsible for the inmates and that she does not trust Mr Pedanski’s judgement. Whilst

conflict between the Camp Officials is significant, it is more violent typically than the conflict between the inmates.

Introduction

Conclusion

Secondly, the inmates of Camp Green lake face conflict both between themselves, but also as a result of punishments and actions of the Camp Officials. Armpit says, "The Caveman's cool", which signifies his emergence from nameless nobody into the group of the inmate.

Though the campers conflict both amongst themselves and the Camp Officials, the level of violence and brutality of this conflict cannot match that of the conflict that occurs in Kate

Barlow and Sam the Onion Man’s time period, which also impacts upon the present.  Conflict occurs across the two time periods of the novel and also inter-generationally between these time periods. Kate Barlow who says, “[The Walker family] can dig for the next hundred years and you'll never find [the treasure]”, which shows that the ultimate cost of the conflict. Overall, conflict breeds conflict and even small forms of conflict can have big impacts in the world of Louis Sachar’s Holes, which is also true of our current world.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SOPHISTICATION TO WHICH WE COULD ACHIEVE THIS TASK…

The ugliest way (Please do not copy this):

This paragraph was about racism, the next paragraph is about courage.

The acceptable way:

Though racism is a significant issue, another key factor in the story is courage.

The best way:

Whilst Harper Lee shows that racism is a significant issue in the novel, by contrast courage is something of an overlooked element of the story.

Provides simply the topics, uses the ugly phrase ‘this paragraph’.

Links to the contention of the essay and contrasts the topics.

Removes the ugly phrase, but lacks a connection to the contention, or essay question.
