SCCA Runoffs Return to TV on CBS Sports Network in December

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 22, 2017) – For the first time in several years, households across the United States will be able to experience the energy and excitement of SCCA® racing when select National Championship Runoffs® events from Indianapolis Motor Speedway air on the CBS Sports Network in December. Starting at 3 p.m. on December 10, motorsport fans will be treated to the 72-car Spec Racer Ford Gen3 spectacle from IMS. A week later at 3 p.m. on December 17, it’s the 72-car Spec Miata field that will wow race fans. Then CBS Sports Network viewers will get a double-feature starting at 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, December 24, when the American Sedan race is broadcast, followed by the Formula F event. Each separate race, produced by Apex Broadcast for the ninth year in a row, will be 60 minutes in length and include commentary from long-time Runoffs stalwarts Rick Benjamin, Greg Creamer, Jeff Lepper and Dorsey Schroeder,

with Heyward Wagner covering pit lane. All broadcast times are Eastern. Check cable or satellite TV providers for local CBS Sports Network channels. Mike Cobb, SCCA President and CEO, said the 2017 Runoffs was a historic event for the Club. It was the first time the SCCA National Championship ever visited Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and a new entry record was set with 969 drivers taking to the track across 28 different classes during the event. “Airtime on CBS Sports Network gives the Sports Car Club of America the opportunity to showcase its exciting brand of road racing on millions of televisions in homes across the nation,” Cobb said. “This year’s event provided many different races from which to choose when constructing a broadcast schedule. The four classes that will air were selected based on the quality of competition, the ability to connect with a wide audience, and the desire to display

a spectrum of SCCA Road Racing activities. Overall, I really believe the Club has put its best foot forward for the audience at home.” With races held Sept. 29-Oct. 1, the winner-take-all 2017 National Championship Runoffs consisted of 19-lap or 40-min. races on a 15-turn, 2.592-mile road course consisting of ten right-hand and five left-hand turns, as well as a main straight 3,700 feet in length. The configuration included portions of Indianapolis Motor Speedway previously utilized by Formula One for the U.S. Grand Prix and currently used by the Verizon IndyCar Series for the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. With broadcasts presented by Mazda, all 28 Runoffs races from Indianapolis Motor Speedway are currently available for online viewing at Motor Trend OnDemand or at the 2017 SCCA Runoffs OnDemand webpage at SCCA.com.

Reserved Number Registration Opens for Majors & Hoosier Super Tour

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 3, 2017) - Drivers planning to compete in the 2018 SCCA U.S. Majors Tour® or Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour can now apply online for Series Registration at MotorsportReg.com. Those paying the $50 Series Registration fee can reserve a single or two-digit number in a Conference of their choosing with payment deferred until January 1, 2018. The same number can also be reserved, if available, in other Conferences for an additional $25 per Conference. A Series Registration fee of $100 allows drivers to register a three-digit number, with the leading digit required to be “1,” for all Conferences. Racers with a 2017 U.S. Majors Tour series registration will have until November 15 at 9 a.m. CST to reserve the same number within a Conference for the coming year. At

that time, unreserved numbers will be released back into the general pool. Only SCCA Full Competition and SCCA Pro Racing License holders may register for the U.S. Majors Tour or Hoosier Super Tour series. Registration allows drivers to prepare number graphics for their cars that will be good for the season. Registered participants can receive a special Hoosier Super Tour hard card, but only if they have a headshot photo associated with their SCCA member profile. Those who do not have a headshot photo on file can submit a picture via email to the SCCA Membership Department. Registrants will also receive series decals for car placement prior to events, as well as a $25 coupon for merchandise at www.sccagear.com. Reserved numbers will be honored until two weeks prior to an event. In-Conference reserved numbers

will be given priority over out-of-conference reserved numbers for event registration. In the case of a dual-conference event, any duplicate reserved number requests will be resolved by earliest event registration. The word “reserved” does not mean “permanent.” If class run groups for any event differ from a norm, then number assignments for that event will give preference to the in-conference drivers who register first, then further duplicate requests will be resolved by earliest event registration. The reserved number program does NOT apply to the SCCA Runoffs. Both the U.S. Majors Tour and Hoosier Super Tour serve as paths to the 2018 SCCA National Championship Runoffs® being held this year at Sonoma Raceway in California. Visit www.scca.com for more information.

Please feel free to call me or text at 503-793-4885. If I don’t answer it’s because I am working. I will truly miss my time out on track but I hope that my little red miata can find a good new home.

No Significant Changes to 2018 Runoffs Qualification Criteria

Topeka, Kan. (Nov. 20, 2017) -- With an amazing Indianapolis Motor Speedway Runoffs in the record books, the Sports Car Club of America® now looks ahead to the 2018 SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® taking place October 16-21 at Sonoma Raceway in California -- the Runoffs’ first-ever visit to that Northern California venue. But to be part of all the Runoffs action in 2018, competitors need to meet certain qualification criteria. The process by which racers receive invites to compete at the upcoming Runoffs remains relatively unchanged. Three distinct paths again exist for racers to gain eligibility. For those involved in Hoosier Super Tour or U.S. Majors Tour Conference events, drivers must first participate in a minimum of three separate weekends, in any Conference, and have a minimum of three individual race starts, all in the same class. Competitors again have the option of substituting two Regional race weekends for one U.S. Majors Tour event. A Divisional Championship path to a Runoffs invite also remains an option. Here, a competitor must first participate in the same class for a minimum of four weekends within a single Divisional Championship. Then, racers must finish in the top three positions within a class point standings, except for Spec Miata and Spec Racer Ford Gen3 where the top five will be invited to the Runoffs. A competitor must qualify in the same class in which he/she is entering the Runoffs, though he/she may compete in any car eligible for the class. In addition to the top three (top five in SRF3/SM) Divisional Championship point earners,

drivers in the top 50 percent of the NorPac and SoPac Divisions in 2018 will be eligible for Runoffs invitations dictated by available space. If a Divisional Championship is not concluded at the time of the Runoffs, invitations will be extended to competitors meeting the requirements three weeks prior to the start of the Runoffs, thus allowing Divisions to run programs year-round. As usual, defending Runoffs winners also get an invite. Such drivers who have not met requirements as stated above may be accepted as a Runoffs entrant. But in such an instance, the driver can only compete in the class or classes being defended, though he or she may compete in any car eligible within the class. However, a driver may not invoke this provision two-consecutive years in the same class, even if he/she repeats as a National

Champion. As was the case in 2017, SCCA Pro Racing drivers may substitute one participation in a U.S. Majors Tour event with a Trans-Am Series or F4 United States Championship event in the corresponding class. So, check calendars, make travel plans and get races in to make sure you are at the first ever SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Sonoma Raceway alongside California’s beautiful Napa Valley.

Runoffs Champion Rick Harris Joins SCCA as Racing Technical Manager

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 16, 2017) - Rick Harris, a 15-year member of Sports Car Club of America® and the 2008 F Production National Champion, will join the SCCA national staff beginning Dec. 1 as the Road Racing Technical Manager. In his new role, Harris will be based in Topeka, Kansas and be responsible for managing member communications related to SCCA Road Racing rules and specifications.

He will support and oversee member inquiries and the rule request processes, as well as work closely with and support the Club Racing Board. Harris will also be charged with developing and presenting training programs for scrutineers, and manage at-track compliance visits as required. “I am super excited to join the SCCA Road Racing Staff,” said Harris, who has raced in SCCA’s Spec Miata, F Production and now the E Production class. “It’s very humbling to be

professionally involved in one of my hobbies. I have been a car guy my entire life having owned over fifty automobiles since I was 16 years old. I can’t wait to get started on this new adventure and serve my fellow racers.” While living in the Boulder, Colorado area the last several years, Harris has worked as Director and Senior Director for Seagate Technologies and Dot Hill Systems, companies on the leading edge of cloud data storage technology. There, he was responsible for providing leadership and organizational structure to the entire Cloud Systems Support Team servicing three platforms, and offered strategic guidance to cross-functional teams that delivered resolutions to customer issues.

Before that employment, Harris spent a decade working in Wichita, Kansas, for NETApp/LSI Corporation as a Director and Senior Manager of Global Technical Support Services, Facilities Executive, and a Technical

Support Sr. Manager. His Information Technologies career began in 1994 at IBM as an Operations/Technical Support Manager. Eric Prill, SCCA’s Vice President and COO, noted that John Bauer, who has served dual roles in the SCCA competition and information technology departments since 2014, will now focus more on IT projects moving forward while remaining closely aligned to each of SCCA’s competition programs. “The addition of Rick to the team and the revised role for John gives the national office a great start to 2018,” Prill said. “As the Club and motorsports industry evolves, so too do staffing needs. Rick’s professional background in leading support service teams will be a great fit for the SCCA as our primary focus is to serve member needs.”
