MARCH 1, 2020 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

It’s all about how much we’re willing to lie to oursel-ves. That’s really what that sad story of the Fall of Adam and Eve is about. The Prince of Lies sends out his first trial balloon. Hey, did God really say you couldn’t eat any of the fruit of the garden? Oops, he overshot that one. Eve is already correcting him with the truth, Oh no, we can have all the fruit except from the tree in the middle of the garden. Okay, he’ll have to go straight to his BIG LIE. You poor thing! God is deceiving you. God knows that as soon as you eat of that fruit you’ll be as smart as the gods and you’ll know the difference between good and evil. And there you have it. They knew all along that they were being played. God was holding out on them. They certainly were too smart to let God keep them in the dark like this. They grabbed the fruit and gobble it down. And here’s the thing. Now they knew the difference between good and evil, because now there WAS a difference. Before they were lured into lying to themselves, only good surrounded them. You cer-tainly won’t die if you eat the fruit! whispered the Prince of Death. The thing is, there WAS no death before they ate the fruit. It was in the moment of their profound lying to themselves that death en-tered the world. We lie to ourselves a lot, and the result is that we are sick and sad. But Jesus saved us from ourselves. All the shiny objects of this world can’t separate us from the love of Christ, and that’s just what he told Satan that liberating day in the desert. What are the lies you keep telling yourself?

GOSPEL Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so many wonderful opportunities before us, we can also get easily distracted and exhausted. There is always something to do, respond to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off course, and the best remedy for getting back on track is the experience of the desert. Here we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get back on course. We desperately need the season of Lent. This simple time of year forces us into greater awareness and grounds us in what is good and true. What weighs you down and keeps you trapped? Maybe you are trying to do too much and please too many peo-ple. It could be that your fragile self-image is always push-ing you to prove yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, ultimately due to a lack of faith, can quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that you are listening to too many voices and allowing all of the negativity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your heart and in all of God’s creation. Or maybe you struggle too much with fear. Perhaps so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own agenda and goals and left with little psychologi-cal or spiritual room to consider and respond to the plight of your neighbor. Do anger, bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your heart? How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust? For many, their passions and what can be found on the internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their inner life and freedom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a childlike trust in God? Define this and use the next few weeks to allow God to chart you a course away from them. Silence, being alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and dryness are all found in the desert. You will also find God and your true self in this holy place. Ready to go?

Please contact the parish office if you wish to request a Mass intention, or if you would like to put someone on our prayer list.

The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 8:30 Sundays before the 9 am Mass

March 7-8, 2020

LIVE THE LITURGY We desperately need the season of Lent. Have you ever found yourself running in all directions, tired, frustrated, and frazzled and yearning for the moment when you can stop, find some time for reflection and prayer, and get your head straight? Life pulls us in all directions. On top of that, the presence of sin in our lives gives us blurry vision and makes us forget who we really are. We can easily lose touch with God. Lent gives us the opportunity to return to simpler times and clear away some of life’s clutter. We can change up our routines a bit and realize that Jesus is the one who can set us right with God and restore what was originally meant to be. Our task is to avoid the temptations that can weigh us down, distract us, and distort our vision. Are you aware of what things in your life do this to you? Over the next few weeks, you have an opportunity to avoid them.

Questions of the Week First Reading The story of the Garden of Eden reveals that humanity’s first sin against God was that of disobedience. In what are-as of your life do you struggle to obey God? Second Reading Paul saw Jesus’ obedience not only as reversing the disobe-dience of Adam, but also bestowing upon believers right-eous and eternal life. What do you find most interesting about this revelation from Paul? Gospel Reading Jesus resisted the devil’s temptations by remaining focused on his fidelity to the Father. What temptations are you will-ing to confront during the season of Lent?

Starting Feb 28, 2020, Lenten Soup Supper every Friday during Lent at 6 pm at the Rose Room, followed Sta-tions of the Cross at 7 pm.

¿A qué desierto entraremos? ¿Qué descu-briremos en él? ¿A quién encontraremos?

Dear St. Rose of Lima Community, Praise be Jesus Christ! It is said in ministry, the minister, more so than those who are ministered to, is the one who is blessed abundantly. You are many and I am one. The gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit working through you are what blessed me and changed me and so please know my heart is filled with gratitude for having had the privilege of serving the St. Rose of Lima Community. In order, however, for the Holy Spirit to come, Jesus had to go. This was scary for the disciples because they had grown close to Jesus their friend, but it was necessary. Why was it necessary? It was necessary because Jesus was limited in his singular humanity. Jesus, in his singular humanity, couldn’t reach the ends of the earth with the Good News of Salvation, the Good News about the new and everlasting Kingdom of Heaven. If his Holy Spirit, however, came among his people, the Body of Christ, then the message, by the power of the Holy Spirit working through the Church, you and I, could spread like wild fire. That is what we celebrate at Pentecost, namely, that God didn’t leave us as orphans, but rather as equipped missionaries of His truth and love. It is for me a joy to think about the ways in which the Holy Spirit has been working at St. Rose of Lima. I think of the charity of the St. Vincent de Paul ministry, Knights of Columbus, Holy Name, Altar and Rosary, and all the many ministries that involve School of evangelization San Andres. I think of the school and the incredible opportunity to educate the youth and hand on the faith, I think of the growing RCIA program where candidates and catechumens prepare to receive the sacraments of initiation in order to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. I think of the bible studies, the growing faith formation programs for the adults and youth, I think of the powerful Eucharistic liturgies we have celebrated, the marriages, funerals and baptisms, I think of the community coming together for Lenten Soup Suppers and Stations of the Cross, the youth group breakfasts, First Sunday coffee and donuts, I think of all the nuts and bolts activity (that not many know about) from the staff and the volunteers. I could go on and on, but you get the picture. There are a lot of moving parts and it takes a lot of vessels for the Holy Spirit to do His thing and make it work unto the Glory of God! That to me has been incredible to witness. It has to be the work of God. Thank you for witnessing to me, the Gospel! I am truly blessed by you. Like Jesus, we priests have to go. To go is an opportunity for change, and while I think stability is good because in stability we learn to love, it is in the shake-up of change we learn to trust and trust is the foundation and beginning of love. And so from that perspective, change is good. The shake-up of change is an opportunity to turn to the Lord and depend on Him, and experience new ways that the Lord provides His Holy Spirit in new circumstances full of new dynamics. It is this open disposition, the disposition of turning and depending on the Lord, that He can make all things new. That to me is exciting.

Page 7: Est. 1924 · 2020. 3. 2.

We priests have our charisms and gifts, but we are only one, and in our singularity we can’t possibly meet all the needs of God’s motley crew of people, and so from that perspective it is good for you that I go, and another priest come to share with you his charisms and gifts. My dear friends at St. Rose of Lima, all this having been said, I am going to miss you, and it is difficult for me to say goodbye, but that is a good thing because it means there were loving relationships. Know this: I will remember always in the Eucharist. The memory is such a powerful faculty of the soul and to use it is not to be stuck in the past, but rather to bring forward into the present all those whom we have encountered so as to unite in and through Jesus to and for the Father and thereby forging on into the future towards the eternal unity in the eternal now. What an awesome story we have been loved into by the Lord! What an awesome chapter St. Rose of Lima has been for me, and so the story unfolds not with disconnected and unrelated chapters as if things happen only by chance, but rather with organically connected, meaningful, purposeful development, and trajectory. Friends please know that if any good was done by me it was done by the Lord, and if I hurt anyone in any way, shape or form it was because of me, and for that I am truly sorry and beg for your forgiveness. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being such a huge blessing in my life, and let’s remember to always hold each other in prayer. I will remember you always, especially in the Eucharist. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Nick
