TRANSCRIPT
By all accounts, our open-ing reception for our 2014 Atlanta Celebrates Pho-tography show, "Light Up My Soul" was a smashing success. When I got home I was beat!
If you haven't seen the show yet, please make an effort to go see it. Our neighbors, The Garage Door Studio have now opened, and the exhibit is open to the public during their business hours, Tues-day-Sunday, 11am to 7pm. The exhibit is located in the Tudor Square Event Space, 119 Center St., Avondale Estates, GA 30002.
This show could not have happened without the hard work of a lot of peo-ple. My gratitude goes out especially to Josh Earhart, who organized all the en-tries to the show and man-aged the jurying process-he put this show together. And words cannot de-scribe how wonderful it was to have Christy Murray handle all the plan-ning and execution of our opening reception-we sim-ply could not have had it without her and her hard work made it such a great event. Thanks also go out to our juror, John Mariana. We were the first to use the new Tudor Square Event Space for a show like this, and while they provided the supplies, we provided the energy and set up the hanging system in addition to hanging the show-in the form of Tony Thaxton, Charles Pickney, Josh Earhart, Stan Kalisch and Cherie Truesdell. And Tony also took all the hanging and show photos for us! What a great team we had pulling this thing all to-gether! It takes A LOT of
work to do something like this, so PLEASE tell all the volunteers THANK YOU! Congratulations to the following artists who have images juried into the show: Al Levine, Anne Nettles, Armetrice Cabine, Barb Stevenson, Bill Bradford, Bob Kelly, Carolyn Miller, Gay Allen, Greg Comstock, Jack Martin, Jan Schefstad, Janerio Morgan, Joe Hoyle, John McGinn, John Nichol, John Razza, Josh Earhart, Mettina Van der Veen, Mike Boatright, Nancy Sill, Paul Krugman, Rita Frix, Roy Gordon, Samuel Brown, Stan Kalisch, Stephen Weiss, Emory McGinty

lenses. The flip-out screen makes it easy to aim the cam-era pointing straight up, straight down, or at ground level. This is a versatile and capa-ble camera for the price. 6. What is your favorite sub-ject/what inspires you? I really like backlit flowers and foliage, nature's stained glass. I use the superzoom focal length and can get a macro-like image the size of a postcard, from five away. 7. If you do your own post-production work, what soft-ware are you using? I use a free program named Photoscape and recently have learned to use Photoshop Ele-ments. I see the potential of editing layers in Elements! 8. Do you do your own print-ing? What type of printer do you use? I print very little, only for an ex-hibit or to give a gift. One ad-vantage of digital is taking hundreds of photos and not filling up the house with prints! On the occasions I do print, I use a commercial photo printing company. The cost of at-home printing just does not make it practical for me.
1.Where do you live in Atlanta? City of Decatur since 1991
2.What is your profession? Software Testing for MetLife. 3.How long have you been a member of SPS? Since January 2012. The first meeting I attended had Mark Alberhasky speaking, and I was wowed by his work and his story becoming a master pho-tographer. 4. How long have you been into photography, and how did you get started? I first borrow my father's old twin lens reflex when I was 15. That was 1971! I grew up in a small Missouri town and photography was something creative to do. I was yearbook photographer in high school and always had a camera with me. 5. Tell us about your equipment. I use a Canon Powershot SX40, a "superzoom" with a screen that flips out. I am amazed with the relatively small size and zoom capabilities (35X) of this camera. The im-ages are 12 megapixel .jpg files and I never need to change
9. Anything else you'd like to share about yourself or your photography? After 40 years, I still am ex-
cited about photography and I am proudest of capturing a point of view I've never seen before. I have enjoyed taking part in photo exhibits and teaching workshops for begin-ners. It's a new era for novice photographers; the immediate -- and free! --feedback of digi-tal technology makes it so much faster to learn and im-prove as a photographer these days. A person can make great images without investing a fortune in gear.

Call for Nomination of SPS Officers for 2015
As required by by-laws of the South-eastern Photographic Society, we will be electing new officers for 2015 during a business meeting of the club, which will take place early in our regular meeting on November 7th. Our current President, Mike Boatright, is very much looking for-ward to becoming our Past Presi-dent, so there will be at least one new officer position to be filled. We will call for nominations during the October 3rd meeting. What does it take to serve as an offi-cer of the club? These are the offi-cial duties as outlined in the by-laws. If you are interested in serving, please, see one of our existing offi-cers (President Mike Boatright; VP Cherie Truesdell; Secretary Stan Kalisch or Treasurer, Elton Sauls-berry). Duties of the President The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the Society, and shall pre-side at all regular and special meet-ings of the Society. The President shall be the Chairperson of the Ex-ecutive Committee and shall preside at all of its meetings. The President shall administer the affairs of the Society with the assistance of the Executive Committee and shall co-ordinate the activities of the other members of the Executive Commit-tee. The President shall appoint the Chairperson and members of each standing committee, subject to the approval of the Executive Commit-tee. The President shall appoint the Chairperson and members of such other committees as may be
needed, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee. Duties of the Vice President In the absence of the President, or in case of his or her failure or inability to act, the Vice President (or if there more than one Vice President, a Vice President chosen by a majority of the remaining members of the Executive Committee) shall exercise all of the powers and duties of the President. [Note: It has been our practice that the Vice President serves as Chair of the Program Committee and is delegated responsibility for getting our monthly speakers and judges and works with members to identify topics and mem-ber speakers for our learnshops.-mcb] Duties of the Secretary The Secretary shall keep a complete and accurate record of the actions of the Executive Committee and all of the Society’s meetings. The Secretary shall keep the original copy of the by-laws of the Society including amendements. The Secretary shall carry on and keep re-cords of correspondance of the So-ciety. The Secretary shall be responsible for sending out any notices to the mem-bers as required by the by-laws; how-ever, such notices may be contained in any newsletters of the Society. The Secretary, in conjunction with the Chair of the Membership Committee, shall insure that a complete and cur-rent roster of the members, including their addressees and telephone num-bers, is maintained. The Secretary shall fulfill all other duties which are usually incumbent upon that office.
Duties of the Treasurer The Treasurer shall keep full and accurate account of receipts and disbursements of the Society. The Treasurer shall act as custodian of all moneys and securities of the Society, depositing them in one or more banking institutions ap-proved by the Executive Commit-tee. The Treasurer shall pay all bills and make expenditures au-thorized by the Executive Com-mittee. The Treasurer, in conjunc-tion with the Chair of the Mem-bership Committee, shall have the responsibility for sending bills for dues to the membership; how-ever, this may be contained in the Society’s newsletter. The Treasurer, in conjunction with the Facilities and Equipment Chair, shall keep and maintain a written inventory of all the Society’s property and where it is located. The books, accounts, vouchers and inventories of the Society may be audited by the Executive Committee. At the conclusion of the fiscal year, the Treasurer shall prepare a written annual report of the state of the Treasury, includ-ing an inventory of the Society’s property. Such report shall be filed and kept with the minutes of the Society prepared by the Secretary.
Our projector supports 1080p,
meaning its resolution is 1920 x
1080 pixels.
Aspect Ratio Change
Aspect ratio refers to the ratio
between width and height. The
35mm / APS-C size all of our
standard cameras produce is
1.5 : 1, meaning the width is
one and a half times the
height.
Our projector’s aspect ratio is
1.77 : 1. Your image will have to
be cropped a bit top and bot-
tom or display some black bor-
ders.
Sizing your image un-
cropped
If you want to display your im-
age un-cropped, size it so that
it fits within the 1920x1080
projector dimensions. Both
horizontal and vertical images
will show some black margin
on the sides.
Lightroom
In Lightroom, set the Export
Image Sizing to 1920x1080.
These are constraints, so
Lightroom will automatically
size the image without crop-
ping to fit in these dimen-
sions
How to Size Your Image for Digital Submission
Photoshop
In Photoshop, for both
horizontal and vertical
images set the height to
1080 and allow the width
to size automatically (it
should end up around 1624
for horizontal and 718 for
vertical). The projector will
have empty black space
left and right.
