Thursday IslandThursday Island is rich in history. In 1893, the Green Hill Fort was built on fears of a Russian invasion. Also, that same year, the All Souls Quetta Memorial Church was built in memory of the Quetta shipwreck in 1890, which killed 133 people when it struck an unknown reef. The Japanese Pearling Memorial is dedicated to the hundreds of pearl divers who died from decompression sickness.

CHUULANGUN HOMELANDSIn July 2002 the descendants of a focal Kuuku I’yu Northern Kaanju ancestor, being members of the Claudie / Moreton / Nelson families and living at Chuulangun on the upper Wenlock River, established Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation and since that time have worked in association with Government agencies, State and Federal, as well as private enterprise & the Wilderness Society to make the Kaanju Ngaachi a significant area where the Kaanju people hold social, cultural, spiritual, historical and ecological importance for Kaanju, and are part of the globally significant landscapes of Cape York Peninsula.

Chuulangun Aboriginal Corporation is at the forefront of the return of Kaanju to Country and the development of a Kaanju land and resource framework where the Kaanju Traditional Owners aim to create an Indigenous Protected Area on their homelands and to care for their country according to their traditions and customs. They do this by way of an Indigenous Ranger program which funds the training and the on going management of this pristine environment.

The Chuulangun homeland operate a serviced camp ground for visitors to the area, in close proximity to the Wenlock River.

INDIGENOUS PARTNERSOz Tours has for many years, in conducting our operations, strived to minimise our impact on the environment, spread benefits throughout the local economies in Cape York as well as directly promote and support community well-being with our indigenous partners.

Through our itineraries we have supported communities to set up and operate homeland-based economic enterprises that incorporate sustainable land management , assist in education and training that will build a strong community base, and to promote improvements in the health, social and spiritual well being of our partners as well as that of the wider Aboriginal community.

THE TORRES STRAIT ISLANDSThe Torres Strait Islands lie north of Tropical North Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula. Comprised of 274 small islands (17 are inhabited), the Torres Strait Islands are located in the waterway that separates Australia from the island nation of Papua New Guinea.

Thursday and Horn Island are the most well-known of the Torres Strait Islands. Activities on the islands are quite traditional, with fishing being the major economic source.

Horn IslandHorn Island, with a population of approximately 650, came to prominence during World War II when it suffered eight Japanese air raids. Horn Island is home to the only airport in the Torres Strait Island group, as some of the other inhabited islands only have a small airstrip.

Make sure to visit the museum and art gallery in the small town of Wasaga. And be sure not to miss some of the historic World War II sites on one of the tours that operate on the island.

EXPERIENCE THE OZ TOURS SAFARIS DIFFERENCE

CULTURAL TOURISM

ACCOMMODATED TOURSThe need to pause from urban pressure and work place tension is no more evident than today. What better contrast to a high-tech, space age environment than the freedom and relaxation and the subtle therapeutic magic of a wilderness holiday.

Each day the shared delight of the unfamiliar landscape, the flora and fauna, the culture and lifestyle of each destination will enthral you and each evening the unexpected pleasure of traditional Australian hospitality at hotel, motel, station or lodge accommodation will unwind you. Our overnight stays quite often reflect the unique nature of the sparsely inhabited regions in which we travel.

From forest shrouded resorts, hotels and motels in the townships and communities to the “No-Frill” cattle station cabins and tent cabins along the track where no alternatives exist. You will find they are all clean and comfortable, the

hospitality genuine, open and friendly, and the cuisine generous and appetizing.

CAMPING TOURSDuring 200 years of European settlement, the values and perceptions transplanted from other countries, have prevented many Australians from fully seeing and understanding the real Australia, its unique ecology, or the culture of its original inhabitants.

Camping outdoors, in the least disturbed wilderness, rainforest or the arid outback, provides a rare opportunity to further perceive and appreciate our fascinating difference from other lands.

Oz Tours Safaris has various tours that take our passengers through the more remote regions of Australia, however those that choose the camping tour can be assured of a real down to earth Australian bush experience. This is truly living the spirit of adventure in a reasonable degree of comfort in our purpose built 4WD drive air conditioned vehicles. An unforgettable Australian Experience, one that will live long in your memory!

An important element is group participation. Whether striking camp, a fireside chat or an early morning bush walk. We favour traditional open fire and camp oven cooking and careful planning ensures fresh sourced food along the way

delivers hearty healthy meals throughout the tour.

Oz Tours has several Permanent Private Camps established in Cape York Peninsula. The camps afford our travellers a degree of ease and comfort not previously available.

COMBINED ACCOMMODATED & CAMPING TOURS

Oz Tours Safaris also provides itineraries with two styles of accommodation:CAMPING when accommodation is just not available which involves dome tents and mattress utilised with pillow and linen. Your Holiday home is a roomy, twin share, high profile Dome Tents, with sewn in floor and High density foam mattresses.

The friendly rivalry begins after a day or two as the trials begin for poll position in the “Sport of Campers” - tent erecting. Our staff are there to show you how to put up and take down your tent. The main responsibility is yours, but usually other campers don’t mind helping out. Shower and toilet facilities are available at National Park camping areas, or camp ground locations. ACCOMMODATION is utilised en route which varies between hotel or lodge with ensuite or rooms or cabin tents with shared facilities.

An affordable outback tour combining adventure and discovery in the “Gulf Frontier”, where the quietness is almost deafening and broken only by the squawk of a native bird or a wandering beast. There is an occasional ‘Willy-Willy’ that disturbs the landscape, but otherwise this is an area where time almost stands still. The Gulf Savannah tour utilises the comfort of air conditioned accommodation at some of the overnight locations, where you will enjoy true Australian hospitality and sample the various styles of cuisine as rich and colourful as the fascinating outback Savannah landscapes and lifestyles you will encounter.

The train journeys are as unique and special as the area itself, these fascinating modes of transport allow you to be a part of a long gone history, a journey on the Gulflander is a tour back in time. To an era when a padded seat was a luxury and roads were bullock tracks. To a time where gold was the currency and home was a canvas & sapling humpy. And a generation where children were born in the dust and education was the school of hard knocks.

The Savannahlander is a train journey which returns you back to Cairns. It is one of the great rail experiences of the world as it rattles its way from the outback region back to the coast, via the scenic Kuranda Range including stops at Barron Falls and Stoney Creek, through World Heritage listed rainforests to Cairns.

Fortunately nowadays the trip you are about to undertake is far less primitive but still retains the romance of those

days gone by. As you travel through the vast and stark undeveloped land mass, its spectacular countryside and interesting history you will be enveloped by the sense of magnificent history and hardship of those early settlers and Gold prospectors.

CHILLAGOE is an area described as wooded savannah grassland. The mountainous terrain as you enter the Chillagoe region from the east, levels out to vast open grazing plains to the west. The Chillagoe region hosts significant geological features and formations not seen anywhere else. The 400 million year old ancient coral reefs are now the limestone karst cliffs that house intricate cave environments.

COBBOLD GORGE occupies an area of about 80 square km and was created by a process that began 1700 million years ago. A diverse range of vegetation grows in the gorge forming a habitat for abundant bird and wildlife. It is also home to fish such as black bream, archerfish, long tom and perch, and freshwater crocodiles.

UNDARA is located on the eastern edge of the ruggedly beautiful Gulf Savannah region of northern Australia. The word Undara means ‘a long way’ in the Aboriginal language, and one of the lava flows from Undara extends 160 kilometres making it the longest lava flow from a single volcano on our planet.

BOODJAMULLA (LAWN HILL) National Park is situated 220km southwest of Burketown and has spectacular gorges with sheer sandstone walls up to 70 metres high, crystal clear green water and lush tropical vegetation. The area is alive with wildlife. Tour Code: G90

Stretching from the Northern Territory border in the east, across to the coast in the west and south to the Great Sandy Desert, the wild and remote area known as the Kimberley is one of the countries last great frontiers.

The region offers one of the most spectacularly rugged coast lines in the world. A place of soaring red cliffs and cascading waterfalls, tidal rivers lined with dense Rainforest, sprawling Mangroves and all are teaming with wildlife. The area is virtually unspoilt, and for a very simple reason! It’s remote.

It covers about 421,000 square kilometres – slightly larger than Japan and much larger than United Kingdom, New Zealand, or the Australian state of Victoria. The Kimberley has only three towns with a population of more than 2,000 (Broome, Derby and Kununurra), and the total population is only around 25,000.

In addition to Route 1 (a sealed road), which runs along the southern part of the area, the unsealed Gibb River Road runs through the heart of the region from Derby to the highway near Kununurra. Access to much of the region is by dirt road (often impassable in the wet season), air (a helicopter is necessary for many parts) or sea.

The Kimberley region was one of the earliest settled parts of Australia, with numerous groups of people arriving over thousands of years from the islands of what is now Indonesia. European settlement, however, is quite recent, dating from around 1885, when the MacDonalds and the Durack’s arrived to set up cattle stations, having spent several years droving their cattle from the eastern colonies. Many other Europeans arrived soon after, when gold was discovered around Halls Creek.

Good group of fellow travellers, diversity of area & accommodation. Still has a ‘New Frontier’ appeal. The highlight of the tour was our guide Andrew whose in-depth knowledge of the area was outstanding. He was extremely respectful, had great inter-personal skills & a wonderful sense of humour. We were very lucky. - A & H Anderson –VIC (Cape York Accommodated)

Hayden & Meakan not only displayed a wide range of knowledge of both the aboriginal & European history of the area, its flora & fauna and general points of interest that made the quality of their commentary a highlight of the trip. The entire trip was a comfortable, interesting experience. It covered a beautiful part of Australia with plenty of highlights to see and learn about. We would have no hesitation in recommending Oz Tours to anyone wishing to undertake a similar tour as we enjoyed our experience with the company very much. - R & C Mallaby – NSW (Cape York Camping)

My tour exceeded every expectation I may have had. I thoroughly enjoyed every experience & will highly recommend Oz Tours to everyone. John was an excellent driver, host & guide. Chris did an excellent job at feeding us ‘most royally’. Variety and taste was superb in the most unlikely locations. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. So many people would never be able to take a trip like this on their own…Long Live Oz Tours! - A. Garner – NSW (Kimberley)

Our tour was amazing – Hirani our leader and incredible driver was fantastic! Her knowledge on tour was excellent, nothing was a problem for her. We were all sad to leave her at the end of the Gulf Savannah…Wonderful Holiday! - B. Molloy –NSW (Gulf Savannah)
