WASHINGTON, 3 June—President BarackObama’s choice to takecharge of the war in Af-ghanistan on Tuesdaycalled “significantgrowth” of the Afghanarmy and national policethe key to his strategy, butthe annual cost of build-ing and maintaining theexisting Afghan force ismore than four timeslarger than the entireAfghan economy.

Army Lt-Gen StanleyMcChrystal’s testimonyto the Senate Armed Serv-ices Committee , which isconsidering his nomina-tion to lead US and NATO

troops in Afghanistan, suggested that the USstrategy in Afghanistan islikely to cost Americantaxpayers and NATOmember nations billionsof dollars for many years.

The Afghan NationalArmy is now 86,000strong, and the nationalpolice have 81,000 mem-bers. The US military hassaid it wants to expand theArmy to 134,000 and thepolice to 82,000 by theend of 2011. McChrystalsaid he plans to boostthose figures, but said hewon’t know by how muchuntil he’s in Afghanistan.

However, maintaining

and building the securityforces to the current 2011goals is estimated to costroughly $4 billion a year, while Afghanistan’seconomy generates only$800 million a year. SenLindsey Graham, R- SC,told McChrystal onTuesday that the USwould have to foot the billfor years.

Reducing gas emissionshas health dividend

BERKELEY, 3 June—Eliminating 10 percent of cur-rent gasoline pollutant emissions would have a sub-stantial beneficial impact on US human health, re-searchers said.

The University of California Berkeley researchersdeveloped a Life Cycle Impact Assessment to meas-ure the benefits on human health that might result froma switch to biofuels.

“While the successful deployment of biofuels re-quires research to overcome technical barriers, thereare other barriers that can often impose constraintsmore challenging than those related to technical fea-sibility, including constraints imposed by health risks,”researcher Thomas McKone said in a statement. “Justthink, if we had done a life cycle impact assessmenton the human health effects of gasoline years ago wemight not be in the situation we’re facing today.”

Assessments of the life cycle impacts of emissionsfrom gasoline-run motors in the United States on acounty-by-county basis show that the heaviest dam-age — darkest coloring — is concentrated in urbanareas, especially Los Angeles, New York and Chi-cago. Large urban regions also suffered dispropor-tionate health damage as a result of benzene emis-sions at service stations and during the transportingby truck of gasoline to service stations, the research-ers said.

The findings are being presented at the at the 31stSymposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemi-cals in San Francisco. —Internet

Obesity, diabetes fuelheart failure risk

NICE, 3 June—The twin epidemics of obesity andtype 2 diabetes will fuel an explosion in heart failure, researchers in Scotland suggest.

John McMurray, professor of cardiology at the West-ern Infirmary in Glasgow, Scotland, said about one-third of patients with heart failure have evidence ofdiabetes, and for them the outlook is very serious andeffective treatment is “very difficult.”

McMurray emphasizes obesity is not just associatedwith an increased risk of heart attack, but also, andespecially, with an increased risk of heart failure.

“Obesity is at least as great a risk factor for heartfailure as it is for heart attack or stroke,” McMurraysays in a statement. “Obesity more than doubles therisk.”

The pathways by which obesity plays such a role inheart failure are not yet fully understood, but have beenshown to have an indirect effect through hypertension, heart attack or diabetes — and a direct effect on theheart muscle itself, McMurray says.

The finding was presented at the Heart Failure Con-gress in Nice, France. —Internet

Folic acid offers moreprotection than thoughtWASHINGTON, 3 June— Baby-protecting folic acid

is getting renewed attention: Not only does it fightspina bifida and some related abnormalities, new re-search shows it also may prevent premature birth andheart defects.

Now pregnancy specialists are asking if it’s timefor the government to boost the amount being addedto certain foods to help ensure mothers-to-be getenough. But for older adults, there may be a downside to the nutrient: Extra-high levels late in life justmight pose a cancer risk. “Folate is assuming the roleof a chameleon, if you will,” says Dr Joel Mason ofTufts University’s nutrition research center, who isresearching that possible risk.

Folic acid is an artificial version of folate, a B vita-min found in leafy green vegetables, citrus fruit anddried beans. Everyone needs regular folate becauseit’s important for healthy cell growth yet the bodydoesn’t store up enough of it.—Internet

TV interferes with infants’language development

SEATTLE, 3 June—Television reduces verbal inter-action between parents and infants, which could de-lay children’s language development, says a US studythat challenges claims that certain infant-targetedDVDs actually benefit youngsters.

The researchers studied 329 children, aged 2 monthsto 48 months, and found that for each additional hourof television exposure, there was a decrease of 770words (7 percent) heard from an adult by the children. The study also found that the more hours spent watch-ing television, the fewer vocalizations infants madewhen adults talked to them. “Some of these reductionsare likely due to children being left alone in front of thetelevision screen, but others likely reflect situations inwhich adults, though present, are distracted by the screenand not interacting with their infant in a discernablemanner,” wrote Dr Dimitri A Christakis, of Seattle Chil-dren’s Hospital, and colleagues.—Internet

Elderly hearing, vocalproblems linked

PHOENIX, 3 June—Astudy of 248 participantswith a median age of 82.4found 11 percent werehard of hearing and hadvocal problems, USresearchers found.

Researchers at DukeUniversity Medical Cen-ter in Durham, NC, saidhearing and vocalproblems go hand-in-hand among the elderlymore frequently thanpreviously thought.

“It’s important torealize these disabilitiesoften occur concurrently,”Dr Seth Cohen, anotolaryngologist at theDuke Voice Care Center,

said in a statement. “Andwhen they do, they canincrease the likelihood ofdepression and socialisolation.”

Nearly half of peopleage 65 and older havesome degree of hearingloss, a published reportsaid, and about one-thirdof elderly adults havevocal problems includingdysphonia — known ashoarseness. Taken apart, the disabilities have beenlinked in the elderly toincreased depression, anxiety and socialisolation.

“When people havetrouble hearing, they

strain their voices to hearthemselves,” Cohen said.“Likewise, people maystrain their voices if theircommunication partnerscan’t hear.”

Because there iseffective treatment forboth hearing loss anddysphonia, it’s importantthat people with onedisability be evaluated forthe other, Cohen said.

The study was pre-sented at the AmericanLaryngological, Rhi-nological and OtologicalSociety in Phoenix.

Obese pregnant womenshouldn’t gain weight

NEW YORK, 3 June—The Institute of Medicine haschanged its recommendation that overweight womenshould gain about 15 pounds during pregnancy, a USresearchers says.

“It is the mindset of our specialty, and our society, that we need to have round, chubby pregnant womenin order make sure they are healthy,” study leader DrYvonne S Thornton, a board-certified specialist inmaternal-fetal medicine at New York Medical College, says in a statement. “Pregnancy has become a licenseto eat. We talk about ‘eating for two,’ but it’s reallymore like eating for one and 1/20th.”

In the study, conducted at several hospitals, theresearchers followed 232 obese pregnant women, allof whom had a body mass index of 30 or greater. Halfof the women, who acted as a control group, followedconventional pre-natal nutritional guidelines — “eatto appetite.” The other half were placed on a well-balanced, nutritionally monitored programme, whichincluded a daily food diary.

The study, published in the June issue of the Journalof the National Medical Association, found the averageweight gain in the control group was 31 pounds, compared to 11 pounds in the study group. Twenty-three extremely obese patients lost weight during theirpregnancy.—Internet

Skeleton of ancient whale found in Sweden Air pollution linked to abdominal painSTROMSTAD, 3 June — The skeleton

Researchers fromSweden’s Gothenburg University andthe Natural History Museum in Londonare working together to conduct DNAtests on the ancient whale skeletonmeasuring between 49 and 65 feet, TheLocal said on Monday.

Gothenburg University said in astatement the skeleton was found byconstruction workers during work onthe E6 motorway in April.

EDMONTON, 3 June — Abdominal pain, one of the most common reasons foremergency room visits, may be linkedto air pollution, Canadian researcherssuggest.

Dr Gilaad Kaplan of the Universityof Calgary identified more than 95,000patients discharged from emergencydepartments with non-specificabdominal pain from hospitals inEdmonton, Alberta. The study wasreplicated in more than 25,000abdominal pain patients at a hospital indowntown Montreal. Data fromEnvironment Canada’s National AirPollution Surveillance were used todetermine the hourly levels of ozone,

nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbonmonoxide and particulate matter ofvarying sizes. The study found nearlytwo-thirds of visits for non-specificabdominal pain were by women, and themajority of them were ages 15-24. Youngwomen were more likely to present toemergency departments in Edmontonand Montreal for non-specific abdominalpain on days when indicators of airpollution were elevated.

Kaplan and the co-authors speculatethat young women are the most affectedcohort because they are at increased riskfor functional motility disorders — themost common of which is irritable bowelsyndrome.—Internet

WASHINGTON, 3 June—Penguinpoo (guano) stains, visible from space, have helped British scientists locateemperor penguin breeding coloniesin Antarctica. Knowing their locationprovides a baseline for monitoringtheir response to environmentalchange, according to a new study

published this week in the US journalGlobal Ecology and Biogeography.

In the new study, scientists fromBritish Antarctic Survey (BAS)-describehow they used satellite images tosurvey the sea-ice around 90 percentof Antarctica’s coast to search foremperor penguin colonies.

The survey identified a total of 38. Tenof those were new. Of the previouslyknown colonies six had re-located andsix were not found.

Because emperor penguins breed onsea-ice during the Antarctic winter littleis known about their colonies. Reddishbrown patches of guano on the ice, visiblein satellite images, provide a reliable indi-cation of their location.

BAS mapping expert Peter Fretwellexplains “We can’t see actual penguinson the satellite maps because the resolu-tion isn’t good enough. But during thebreeding season the birds stay at a colonyfor eight months. The ice gets pretty dirtyand it’s the guano stains that we can see.”

Emperor penguins spend a large partof their lives at sea.
