People’s Desire

Value national culture andtraditional costumes

Today, the world sees dramatic changesin the communication field. As a result ofglobalization process, alien cultures arepenetrating deep into the nation. Especially, theyouth have come under the influence of westernmusic, arts, dances, costumes, ideas andlifestyles.

Attaining knowledge of modern ideas andviews is a positive sign. However, it is mandatoryfor the people of us not to make a carbon copyof alien music and lifestyles and relationship, unwisely thinking that using them is staying intouch with the developments around the world.

It is required to keep off decadentcostumes which are absolutely against Myanmarlifestyle and culture. Therefore, it is immoral tobe in decadent dresses in public areas and onpassenger vehicles.

For a nation or a people, to value andpreserve traditional costumes is a seriousmatter. Otherwise, national prestige andintegrity will be degrading, and even the nationand the people will become extinct, which thepeople must be well aware of.

So, each and every citizen has to beequipped with a strong sense of nationalisticspirit. The spirit of cherishing and protectingown race is associated with the image, strengthand value of the mass of women. Thus, womenhave to avoid imitating alien cultures andcostumes.

Alien cultures and music are infiltratingthe nation through economic and cultural doors. Therefore, it is obligatory for the entire peopleespecially new generations to preserve andpromote national prestige and integrity byhaving a high regard for national culture andtraditional costumes.

NASA clears shuttle Discoveryfor 24 Feb launch

WASHINGTON, 19 Feb—After anhours-long meeting at the KennedySpace Centre in Florida, NASA’s topofficials unanimously cleared the spaceshuttle Discovery for its final launchnext Thursday.

NASA shuttle managers made thedecision today during the mission’sFlight Readiness Review, where theydiscussed the current state ofDiscovery, the International SpaceStation, and the astronauts who willfly the orbiter on its 39th and finalflight.

Discovery is targeted to liftoff fromKennedy Space Centre in CapeCanaveral on the same day that theEuropean Space Agency’s AutomatedTransfer Vehicle-2 (ATV-2) cargo ship

is scheduled to arrive and dock at thespace station.

Initially, NASA officials thoughtthe space traffic jam would forcemission planners to delay Discovery’slaunch by one day to 25 Feb. But,NASA officials decided early intoday’s meeting that changing theshuttle’s launch date is not necessary.

“The ATV is going to dock aboutsix hours before we launch,” saidMike Moses, NASA’s shuttleintegration manager. “We will havetanked the vehicle by then. If theyrun into a problem during docking,we still might launch that day, wemight not – we’ll have to talk aboutthat one in real time.”

free-electron laserWASHINGTON, 19 Feb—The Navy just set a new

world record, a test blast from a new type of laserthat can shoot cruise missiles from the sky inseconds with a deadly accuracy that simply doesn’texist in the military’s vast arsenal today.

And that new record moved them one stepcloser to proving the “holy grail” of laser guns isreal.

To create incredible power requires incredibleenergy. After all, the more power one puts into alaser accelerator, the more powerful and precise thelight beam that comes out on the other end. Duringa private tour of the Jefferson Lab in Newport NewsVA, on Friday, scientists blast unprecedented levelsof power into a prototype accelerator, producing asupercharged electron beam that can burn through

of Naval Research (ONR), injected a sustained 500kilovolts (KV) of juice into a prototype acceleratorwhere the existing limit had been 320 kV — aworld’s record, the scientists explained. —Internet

Antipsychotic drugs raiseheart risks, experts warn

NEW YORK, 19 Feb—Doctors must not forgetabout the physical healthof people with seriousmental health disorderswho take antipsychoticdrugs, experts warn.

The authors of aneditorial in the 19 Febissue of The Lancet notedthat patients with severemental illness live anaverage of 16 years lessthan people in the generalpopulation. Heart disease, not suicide, is the majorcause of death in thesepatients and antipsychoticdrugs are a factor.

A study publishedrecently in the Archivesof General Psychiatryfound that patients whotook an antipsychoticdrug gained 11 to 13pounds within six to eightweeks after they startingtaking the drug.

“The combination ofantipsychotic side effectswith poor diet, physicalinactivity, high rates ofsmoking and other factorsassociated with psychoticillness, together withsocioeconomic depri-vation, has a devastatingeffect on cardiometabolichealth,” according to theeditorial.

“If existing antipsy-chotics are here to stay— at least for theforeseeable future —what can be done toameliorate their effectsand improve patients’cardiometabolic health?”the authors asked.

Sole responsibility

for safeguarding thephysical health of patientswith serious mentalhealth conditions oftenfalls to primary careproviders, but mentalhealth teams need to takean active role in that care, the editorial suggests. Forexample, a patient’sphysical health should beassessed when they entermental health care.

They concluded:“Antipsychotic drugs area clear risk to cardio-metabolic health. Thisrisk is, all too often, anecessary one. But thetrade-off between mentaland physical well-beingis one that no patientshould be forced to make. The mind-body dicho-tomy is both outdatedand dangerous.

The price of goodmental health must notbe a lifetime of physicalillness.”

Pakistan judge orders arrestof US car’s driver

LAHORE, 19 Feb—A judge on Friday ordered thearrest of the driver of a US vehicle that struck andkilled a Pakistani while rushing to help an Americandetained in a pair of fatal shootings, a lawyer for thevictim’s family said.

The arrest warrant could add to the tensionssurrounding the case of the shooter, Raymond AllenDavis. The US insists he was acting in self-defenceagainst robbers and qualifies for diplomatic immunitybecause he worked for the embassy.

The odds of Pakistani police detaining anyone inthe US car are low. Authorities say they do not knowwho was in the vehicle, and the Americans have saidlittle on the matter, other than acknowledging the carwas driven by US Embassy staff.

The judge’s order could be a means of pressuringthe US to produce the driver, who has not beenidentified. But it’s highly unlikely that any Americansinvolved in the traffic accident are still in Pakistan.Employees of the US mission who get into troubleare typically on the first plane out of the country.

WASHINGTON, 19 Feb—A bionicprosthetic arm that is controlled by itsoperator’s thoughts and feels like theamputee’s lost limb went on displayThursday at a major US scienceconference. More than 50 amputeesworldwide, many of them militaryveterans whose limbs were lost incombat, have received such devicessince they were first developed by USdoctor Todd Kuiken in 2002.

The arm uses technology calledTargeted Muscle Reinervation (TMR),which works by rerouting brain signals

from nerves that were severed in theinjury to muscles that are working andintact.

“What we do is use the nerves thatare still left,” Kuiken said. “Musclebecomes the biological amplifier.”

Glen Lehman, a retired US militarysergeant who lost his arm in Iraq, demonstrated the latest technology atthe annual conference of the AmericanAssociation for the Advancement ofScience in Washington.

“It feels great, if feels intuitive. Itis a lot better than the other prostheticI have now,” said Lehman, whoseforearm and elbow were blown off ina Baghdad grenade attack in 2008.

“The other one is still controlled bymuscle impulse, you just flex muscle tomake it move, it is not intuitive. Thisarm is more trained to me, whereas theother arm I had to train to it,” he said.

“It does feel like my own hand.”Lehman demonstrated for reporters

how he could pinch his finger andthumb together, lift his forearm andbend his elbow, and turn his wrist justby thinking about those actions.

WASHINGTON, 19 Feb—Google is making Websearch more social, weaving posts from the Twitter,Flickr, Blogger and other accounts of a user’sfriends into search results.

The move is an expansion of “Google SocialSearch,” which the Internet giant introduced in2009.

Instead of featuring at the bottom of a page ofsearch results, relevant posts from the social mediaaccounts of a user’s friends are now integratedinto the list of results themselves.

A Google search for camping, for example, may bring up a Twitter post by a friend abouthiking trails or a link to campsite pictures uploadedby a friend to Flickr.

“Relevance isn’t just about pages — it’s alsoabout relationships,” Google product managementdirector Mike Cassidy and product managerMatthew Kulick said in a blog post.

“Today we’re taking another step forwardenabling you to get even more information fromthe people that matter to you, whether they’republishing on YouTube, Flickr or their own blogor website,” they said.

“This means you’ll start seeing more frompeople like co-workers and friends, withannotations below the results they’ve shared orcreated,” they added.

“After labelling began, 57 percent in NewYork and 18 percent in Newark said they noticedthe calorie in-formation. A total of nine percentsaid that the information influenced their choices,”said the study. Among adults, 28 percent said theinformation influenced what they ate. Two cameras streamreal-time video of human estures to a pair of laptopcomputers. The laptops process the video signaland send corresponding instructions to the roboticarm so when the human reaches to grab an object,so does the robot.

The arm has a future in remote robotics, but itsdevelopers say the underlying technology has farmore exciting implications for human interactionwith computers of the future. LONDON, 19 Feb — Cancer expertshave identified a gene which can causea particularly aggressive form of breastcancer to develop. ZNF703 is the first“oncogene” to be discovered in fiveyears. It is overactive in around one in12 breast cancers, and could account forup to 4,000 UK cases a year. Cancer Re-search UK, whose scientists carried outthe work, said the gene was a “primecandidate” for the development of newbreast cancer drugs.

An oncogene is one which would nor-mally help instruct healthy cells to dividebut if it becomes overactive, it upsets thenormal checks and balances that control

that process. That damage is describedas being “like a car’s accelerator becom-ing stuck down”, and the cell and all itsdaughter cells are permanently instructedto divide. Her2 — another oncogene —is already tested for. The drug Herceptinwas developed to treat Her2 positivebreast cancers.—Internet

WASHINGTON, 19 Feb —The study of birds, batsand flying insects couldbe transformed by the useof technology designedfor tracking storms, re-searchers say. Meteorolo-gists once treated the sig-nals from flying animalsas a nuisance that compli-cated their measurements. But recent improvementsin computing power andnetworking of radar sta-tions have turned that

nuisance signal into avaluable data source onanimal ecology.

A panel told theAAAS conference thatradar could spot a singlebee at 50km. Further im-provements to thetechnique must be madebefore that level of reso-lution can be reached, however; now it is thestorms that are complicat-ing the signals that interestbiologists. But pioneer of
