WHEN God created the angels, those beautiful spirits of light and love which surround His heavenly throne in great numbers, He gave them wonderful gifts of holiness, beauty and wisdom.

One of the greatest of the archangels was Lucifer, whose name means "bearer of light." He was proud of his power and wanted to be worshipped instead of worshipping God, his Creator. He cried out loudly, "I will not serve God!" Another great archangel set up his battle cry of love and obedience: "Michael - Who is like God?" In a great battle, the good angels, led by Michael, cast the bad angels into hell. In reward for his love and obedience, God made Archangel Michael prince of all the heavenly armies.

From the beginning of time, St. Michael was the leader of God's chosen people. In the New Testament he is the guardian angel and the protector of the Catholic Church.

RCIA MEMBERS MADE ADVENT WREATHS

Life Teen is a Catholic youth ministry organization and movement originating in the United States. Life Teen believes that "Eucharist-based ministry has the power to transform teens, transform parishes, and transform culture." "Inspired by pope John Paul II's call for a New Evangelization, Life Teen believes that youth are the key to this new springtime in the Church.”

Life Teen is known primarily for their parish-based Life Teen program for high school teenagers and is used by over 1,600 Catholic parishes in 31 countries around the world. In 2003, seeing the need for dynamic middle school ministry, they launched the Edge program for middle school youth which is now used by almost 1,000 parishes in 10 countries. As of 2005, over 100,000 high-school-age Catholics across the country attend Life Teen each week.

THE ADVENT WREATH The use of the Advent Wreath is a traditional practice which has found its place in the Church as well as in the home. The blessing of an Advent Wreath takes place on the First Sunday of Advent or on the evening before the First Sunday of Advent. The blessing may be celebrated during Mass, a celebration of the word of God, or Evening Prayer. The candles represent the four weeks of Advent and the number of candles lighted each week corresponds to the number of the current week of Advent. There are three violet candles and one rose candle. The rose candle is lighted on the Third Sunday of Advent, also known as Gaudete Sunday. When the Advent Wreath is used in church, on the Second and succeeding Sundays of Advent the candles are lighted either before Mass begins or immediately before the opening prayer; no additional rites or prayers are used. When the Advent Wreath is used in the home, the opening prayer of the Sunday Mass is recited when the candles are lighted. The lighting of the candles may be preceded or followed by an Advent hymn and a Scripture reading. The lighting of the Advent Wreath may fittingly be included as a part of the evening meal.

ST. ANNE CATHOLIC CHURCH

"And the angel came in unto her, and said, hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." - Luke 1:28

It is the term "full of grace" that is emphasized by the Church when dealing with Mary's Immaculate Conception. The title "full of grace" comes from the Greek word escharotomies, which describes a "perfection" and "abundance" of grace. In other words, Mary was proclaimed by the angel to be with a perfection of grace, which was a very powerful statement. How can Mary be completely and perfectly with God's grace, yet still have sin left in her? Christians eventually came to recognize that it was extremely possible for Mary to be without sin, especially if she was completely filled with God's grace. Luke 1:28 happens to be the only place in the Bible where anyone is addressed with the important title of "full of grace."

"The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God." - Luke 1:35

The Immaculate Conception

December 8

Saint Nicholas - a brief history - Feast Day December 6 St. Nicholas was born in 280 A.D, in Patra, a city of Lycia, in Asia Minor. He became the gift giver of Myra. His gifts were given late at night, so that the gift giver's identity would remain a secret. St Nicholas was eventually named the patron saint of children, sailors, Russia and Greece. St. Nicholas was a Christian priest, who later became a bishop. He was a rich person, and traveled the country helping people, giving gifts of money and other presents. St. Nicholas did not like to be seen when he gave away presents, so the children of the day were told to go to sleep quickly or he would not come! Nothing has changed and Santa Claus will not arrive this Christmas unless the children go to sleep early. A famous story about St. Nicholas, is about a poor man who had no money to give to his three daughters on their wedding day. St Nick dropped bags of gold into the stockings which the girls had left to dry by the fire. The sisters found the gold and ever since, children have hung up stockings on Christmas Eve hoping that they will be filled with presents by Christmas morning. In the 1200s, December sixth began to be celebrated as Bishop Nicholas Day in France.
