  3. 3. The Location... 2 Ethiopia is landlocked. The topography is semi-mountainous.
  4. 4. The Location... 3 Ethiopia has 12 river basins. It has deeply varying climates.
  5. 5. Brief History... 4 Ethiopia in ancient times, was known as the kingdom of D'mt in the 9th century B.C.E..
  6. 6. Brief History... 5 In 1st century C.E., the kingdom of Axum replaced D'mt.
  7. 7. Brief History... 6 The kingdom of Axum faulted, and the Zagwe dynasty was created in 960 C.E.. In the 15th century C.E., the Portuguese came to spread Christianity. Ethiopia suffered heavily from famines that came in the 16th century, and have continued until the present. During the mid 1930s, the Italians invaded and occupied Ethiopia until the end of WWII. Haile Selassie after WWII, was declared emperor of Ethiopia, he had a goal of trying to modernize the country. In the 1970s, Ethiopia was under communist rule. In 1991, Eritrea became an independent country from Ethiopia. Ethiopia is now a federal parliamentary republic in the present (2015).

  9. 9. The Name And The Flag... 8 The modern name originates from the Greek word for Ethiopia, Aethiopia ( ). Several versions of the Ethiopian flag exist. Red symbolizes power, yellow symbolizes the church, green symbolizes the land, and the yellow star in the blue disk represents the unity of the people.
  10. 10. Population And Other Facts... 9 Ethiopia's landmass is 1.1 million square kilometers. It has a population of 90 million people. The major religions are the Ethiopian Orthodoxy, Protestantism, and Islam. The major ethnic groups are the Amhara, and the Oromo.

  14. 14. Economy... 13 Ethiopia is generally poor. Agriculture, forestry, fishing, and gem stone mining, are their major economic sources. The unemployment rate is 18%. The average monthly wage earning is 100 USD. Welfare is non-existent.
  15. 15. Education... 14 English is a 2nd language. The literacy rate is 41%. Education facilities are below average. Schools are very corrupt. There is violence against school girls.
  16. 16. Final Thoughts... 15 Ethiopia has a rich ancient history. But it has insane communication laws. There are constant famines. Lack of opportunities. It's not worth living there.
